he is an average basketball player. I thought he had potential but hasn't improved like I thought and paying him $20m when he has had injury issues is a huge gamble.

My guess is he is staying in NOLA where he has been treated very well and will be paid more.

Yeah terrible gamble. If we can't attract legit max contract players, we need to do small deals and gradually build a team that can attract them. We can't keep paying players double what they're worth.

Hell no! He's in his 8th year in the league and basically hasn't improved at all since year 2. He doesn't have good court vision, he's not a good defender, and his advanced stats are all mediocre at best. He'd be another guy in a long line of Knicks signings where fans say, "How come all these free agents always start to suck as soon as they sign with us?" It's not some magical curse placed on the team; it's that these players already suck before they get here and Knicks fans refuse to notice.

I've flirted with the idea of it in the not-too-distant past, provided it NOT be at the max and we ended up keeping Melo indefinitely. I agree that he's fallen short of expectations but by all accounts, he is a good locker-room guy and might be an excellent bridge player until our draft pick (hopefully a top tier PG) can step in to replace him. But if the max is what it'd take to acquire him, I'd be far more interested in sending a package of our non-youth role players (i.e. Lee, Thomas, possibly O'Quinn) along with his brother, Justin, for some combination of short-term deals and Buddy Hield, who has largely disappointed this season. Hield has had his rough patches and I believe his best case scenario is Raja Bell (which is unlikely) but his timeline fits our youth and we have time to have him work though the shortcomings in his game.

why would we hand out a max deal? We're a train wreck in need of 12 new players.

How can you be a max player when you're not even an all-star and have mediocre advanced stats?
This would be a typical case of the Knicks overpaying. They pay everyone double what they're worth and then fans wonder why the team has so many holes. Of course you don't have enough cap space to address team needs when you overpay. For a max contract to make sense, a guy's gotta be at least an all-star and probably a high level all-star. Holiday is not worth more than what we gave Courtney Lee. (Lee is worth much less than what we gave him though.)

That's why I say if Reggie Jackson is available we should look to trade for him. Even Dragic would be interesting even though he's older..... both guys could be had for Rose expiring I bet

For once I want a home grown PG. Can we just draft a PG. I'm tired of the outsiders with a big paycheck.

Who are we going for? How do we know they will be any good? Grant was as close to a sure thing but we traded him. He's quietly becoming a bust in the league.

5 point guards are projected to go in the lottery. They ask could be taken in the top 5. The Knicks have alot of tanking to do

I don't think he leaves. An underrated guard I want is ian Clark. No way GS can pay him. He can shoot and play the 1 and 2. He's only 25 years old.

I'd give him an offer 4 years 100mm. 25 mm per for 4
We just spent 30 mm per for Noah and Lee. We pay Rose over 20 mm. Paying Holiday 25 mm is reasonable for a guy who when he is healthy is an upper tier pg.

Maybe we should look at how much the smart teams are paying players and try to follow that rather than repeating our own mistakes.

We should only pay max for a player who is actually worth more than that

Paying max to attract merely a very good player is short sighted

I like Jrue as a bridge player but only on a reasonable deal. Not the guy to mortgage the rebuild on

how would that mortgage the future? Assuming we let Rose go who do we have at guard? If we are lucky enough to draft one of the great PG prospects coming out than signing Holiday for 4 years makes perfect sense from the time line. Draft a PG, have him backup Jru, if he blossoms quickly he can play the 6th man role as well and after 4 years he's the starter.

Its an overpay, but based on who is out there and how best to move the team forward it strikes me as a pretty good fit

We are more than one pg away. We need more players especially ones who play defense w passion

Putting all ur eggs in one basket is rarely wise

Jrue is good but w all the issues not worth max. Very first injury we'll be harping same ol Knicks etc

If he wants to play in NYC on a good deal where we can continue to build I'll come down from Boston to welcome him myself

If not I'd prefer we find our own and if we need a short term bridge keep Jennings who if nothing else relishes the role of setting up teammates

Agree completely - he'd be my Number 1 target in FA. Unless we are able to get a true stud PG in the draft. Then I'd re-sign Jennings for cheap and try to maintain cap flexibility.
