Another thing I feel is KP has to stop passing up open shots he can make! KP should be getting more screens so he can take more open catch n shoot looks. Watching today you would think we don't really have shooters. Melo had too many tough shots when a simple screen could get him clean looks.

He's 7-3, he doesn't need a screen against guys a foot shorter than him. You really need to stop making excuses, almost winning don't add up to anything. This is another team the Knicks don't match up well with.

I disagree about not needing a screen. When you have a weapon like KP then it makes sense to find all the best ways possible to get him more great looks. KP reminds me of an Elephant that doesn't like Mice around it's feet. Boston players take away space and that tactic bothered KP who is so tall that if you're at his base like that he's not comfortable taking the shot. That's why you want to get KP as many CLEAN looks as possible and the best way to do that is with a down screen. There are times when KP should just shoot over a smaller player but this isn't only about smaller guys.

Melo should be using screens more as well. Both are such good shooters that you don't want to ignore the Catch and Shoot offense. One way to create more Catch and Shoot opportunities is to have them work off screens. It doesn't have to be a drastic move. Simple screens are often enough to give a shooter that extra time he needs.

Overall, the team needs to play better defense. The offense will take care of itself when players realize they have major advantages. Porzingis is 7-3, sorry, he needs no screens. Just shoot, he was open the entire afternoon. Screens are needed to get clean looks. Porzingis will always have clean looks especially against a team that usually don't play their 7 footers much.

This team doesn't have a calling card. They don't do anything well and that is the problem. If you want to be good in the NBA you have to be good at one thing either its defense or offense. You can't be in between. If a team plays good defense they can get away with average offense. If they play offense exceptionally well then they can get away with average defense. You can't do one average and the other average to bad.

Anyways they aren't playing to win championships so it really doesn't matter. Put it mildly the Knicks aren't going to stumble into a championship. It was ridiculous how many layups the Knicks were giving up. They don't have a defensive clue. KP should be a monster defensively but he is a small 7'3 that dunk by Horford that needed to be a hard foul. Team is soft, they lack pride. Another thing they ar afraid of the moment once Bosto. And Knicks were tied at 112 the Knicks needed to close the deal but they folded like a cheap tent.

I agree that KP passes up too many open looks and even semi open looks, but to suggest that it's not a good idea to give the guy more screens seems a bit off. Boston's defensive philosophy is to get up into their man and that makes shooters uncomfortable!!! You can keep saying that KP can just shoot over guys but you're not giving any credit to the defensive pressure that Boston puts on teams.

Just watch Boston and in their offense they're setting constant screens. It's just one screen after another! That gives them more open shots and the ability to drive and kick with ease. The style i'm looking for is where we get more movement and disruption of the defense as they have to chase our players thru screens rather than just having to PLAY THE PASSING LANES! That's what teams do to us and Boston is very quick and physical. The won't let you just pass the ball to stationary players! So Player movement with screens is a great way to make them work harder on D.

This entire post is WAY over the top! Can you at least give the team a chance to continue developing into what they're going to be???
Boston was already a playoff team and they added an All Star talent to that mix. They haven't just been put together like the Knicks who have 10 new players and a new Coach!!!

So yeah the Knicks are not there yet, but they are a LOT closer than predicted. The problems with this team are actually about execution more than anything and that is fixable with work and time.

Right now, we have problems matching up against the Celtics. They have 2 players that gives us fits. Smart and Isaiah. Smart is on KPs head playing him physically. We need somebody to cover Isaiah. Would have wanted to see Baker get a chance to slow him down a bit since I think he is our best on-ball defender vs a PG

Develop we been developing for 17-18 years now. If you can't come to play vs your division opponent at home on Christmas. Development process is over it is what it is at this point. This team is reaching mid point of season now and they are still doing a porous defensive job. That was a shut show offense we saw one in one play ground type basketball. While Boston was shredding them with execution style offense with extra passes these guys were play ground heroes.

Defense isn't about developing it's about effort. Defense has nothing to do with developing its 100% effort.

No it's not really JUST about effort. When you play against well coached teams they will keep you working until you have a breakdown which is not always about effort but sometimes about execution and proper rotations. It can be about anticipation of offensive habits of your opponent. It's not all effort as some want you to think.

The Celtics were already a playoff team and they added an All Star level player. NY just put this team together and the few months they've been together doesn't equal the years that Boston has had to be together and develop into a cohesive and instinctive unit on both ends. There is no comparison in that regard. NY is still working to put this together so let's keep things in perspective when it comes to comparing.

Even Jeff hasn't totally figured out how best to use his roster!!! This notion that just cuz we're 30 games in that we should have it all figured out is not being fair. 10 new players, some of which are young or new to the NBA and a new Coach all coming together to slow the process of getting it right. You're being overly hard on this team and it's silly to talk bout 17-18 years when talking about this current roster, most of which just got here!!!

In past years, when the Knicks could score 100 I liked our odds. This year, however, our defense has been so porous that having a reasonable chance to win means we now have to score at least 110 and yesterday that wasn't close to enough. Going into a game knowing you have to put up that many points simply puts too much pressure on multiple players to have good shooting nights. If Melo, KP, or Rose is off our chances of winning become pretty slim. We will not be a truly credible team until we develop a defensive identity and toughness that we have sorely lacked so far. It obviously won't happen overnight but Hornacek has to make this a point of emphasis for us to have a chance in every game we play.

The Knicks are 6-1 when they dish out at least 25 assists and 15-5 when they have at least 20 assists. That means New York is 1-9 when they fail to reach 20 assists, which is as easy a statistic as any to interpret.

The Knicks have a win percentage of .750 when they accumulate at least 20 assists and .100 when they fail to reach that attainable number.

For as clear as it is that the Knicks—and teams in general—win when they move the ball, they won’t stop going ISO. New York run isolation plays with the third-highest frequency of any team in the NBA and rank No. 21 in field goal percentage in said scenarios.

When the Knicks commit to moving the ball, they win. When they refuse to move the ball, they lose.

That is an amazing stat. Thank you for your research. I'm starting to think if the Knicks can add a passing sg that number will happen on most nights.

Can Jason Kidd come off the Coaching bench and suit up again??? That kind of passing SG would fit nicely. The calls for a player like that this summer made sense when you see the scoring we have but really we don't NEED to change but simply make sure that they maintain ball n player movement.

Watched the game the next day on DVR. Notes from watching it...

1. For some reason in the first quarter, Hornacek subbed early. Typically he goes with the first unit for 9 mins or so, unless they are playing bad (which they weren't). He subbed with 5+ mins left in the first, which looked like an attempt to fix what wasn't broke. We were up by 6-7 points at the time. Soon after, the Celtics passed us.

2. Rose had a tough time defending Isiah and Jennings did a far better job playing on the ball defense against Isiah. Jennings had a harder time guarding Smart and Rose did a better job on him. Hornacek should have recognized that Smart was going to bully Jennings at his size and he should have kept Jennings on the floor as long as Isiah was on and reverse with Smart.

3. The "small" lineup or the "big" lineup for us didn't work against Boston because they did well moving the ball to the open 3 point shooter when we went big and to the mismatch when we went small. But primarily this was because we didn't have a faster guard to run after Isiah and a bigger guard to go against Smart. There were times that Lee guarded Smart, but causing a mismatch somewhere else on defense.

4. Plumlee should have been called for this game. We got outrebounded and outhustled, which would probably have never happened with KOQ and Plumlee getting more mins. Noah as usual sucked on defense which was supposed to be his calling just a few years ago. Instead his offense was way better because of some hustle on the offensive boards.

5. Other than Melo, no one really played physical defense. LT played terrible defense.

6. This was a winnable game if we had a good lead in the first half. I blame Hornacek for this loss for poor substitutions. Prior to those subsitutions in the first quarter, the Celtics had made only 1 trey.

7. Knicks biggest takeaway from this game should be....guard the 3 point line. Rebounding by averages per game has been fine.

A fair number of good critiques above. I totally agree melo could benefit from screens. His ISO play is killing us in more ways than one. Players need to touch the ball to stay engaged. When they see melo burn the clock dribble into a double team and then settle for a fall away jumper that's just melo telling his teammates f you. And what the hell was he thinking facing up and dribbling on Bradley-- a very solid defender? Get the ball out of his hands. Pass it to him in catch and shoot and cuts and we'll all be happier.

I disagree that KP needs screens. He should be setting screens. He needs to learn to use his body to create space. He should be instant points when guarded by a smurf. Post and re-post if needed for a little baby hook. Boston is smart to use m.smart on him and it's been effective. Smart gets in his space but KP is faced up w no place to move or get rhythm. KP needs to stick his ass in. Him cath the ball and turn in rhythm or roll to the rim for alley oops which again should be automatic. We need to adapt. Fwiw I think celtics unorthodox defense on KP works in season but if we see them in playoffs we'll sort that out.

I hate Isaiah but have to admit he's good at getting to the rim and creating space. If I were coach I'd have team sag more and pack the paint more. Boston in general is a bad 3 point shooting team. Second quarter was an aberration (we beat them every other quarter fwiw). Regardless, whether you sag or not, the way to play Isaiah is to punish the celts on the other end. It's not illegal to post guards though it seems to be a lost art. If Mark jackson were playing he'd know exactly what to do

Catch and shoot Melo would do really well, cutting we are lucky to see that once a game or never. Melo is seriously averse to cutting to the basket give and go just isn't his game.

might be true; i just don't want the ball in his hands making decisions. that's absolutely the weakest part of his game.

We lost because melo was persistant to get at least 30 points on christmas day again, 9 of 24 shooting :(

Kp 56% Rose 50%, one of them should get a ball in last minute not Melo
