Via the Post:

Through 17 games, point guard Derrick Rose has shown enough progress that a lucrative new contract could be in store for him with the Knicks this summer.

However, Rose, who scored a season-high 30 points Monday in a 112-103 loss against Oklahoma City, can get some security now if Knicks president Phil Jackson is convinced later this season he doesn’t view him as just a one-year rental.

Because Rose’s last contract was more than three years ago, the former Bull is eligible for one of those pre-free-agency “veteran extensions’’ that Russell Westbrook signed over the summer.

By CBA rules, Rose’s veteran extension can only be three years long and start at 7.5 percent higher than his current wage. The extension package would be for approximately three years, $75 million.

“I haven’t talked to them about it,’’ Rose told The Post. “It’s been more about winning games. We’ll see. I’m more concerned with trying to win games, but it’s something I’d have to talk about with my family and team.’’

According to an NBA source, the Knicks have not approached Rose about an extension, but have not ruled it out for late in the season. The Knicks apparently want to make sure his body holds up across a full season and would be willing to pay more this summer if they had to.

Rose is the 14th-highest paid player in the NBA this season at $21.3 million. If he signs an extension now, next season’s salary begin at $23 million. His wage would go to $24.6M in Year 2 and $26.2M in Year 3.

Not bad — unless you believe Rose will play his way into a max deal this summer, considering the escalating salary cap and ridiculous pacts being dispensed.

If he waits until this summer, Rose’s maximum starting salary could be as high as $29 million. That would allow him a chance to sign a 5-year package worth $175 million if he stays with the Knicks — four years if he leaves.

Rose, 28, said he wanted to learn more about those specifics. Players in similar boats are Utah’s George Hill and Derrick Favors and Indiana’s Paul George.

Neither president Phil Jackson nor GM Steve Mills have spoken to the media that regularly covers the team since Sept. 22.

------------------------------------------------

This is actually decent reporting by Berman because i didn't know this is a possibility. Knowing what you know now, would you sign Rose to this "veteran's extension" at approx. 3 years 75m?

I would ride it out until the end of the year. If we decide we want to keep him and have to pay out more because he earned it and he has interest in the free agent market, so be it. I'd rather do that than pay him now and end up in another Amare-like situation.

Disagree... 3 years $75mm is exactly what we want. We want to avoid having to choose between Conley money or losing the guy for nothing. If Rose losses his athleticism he will not be a good NBA player. He's a great scorer but its all based on his ability to penetrate which is elite. Without that he has no skill set to fall back on.

My preference would be to sell him on a 2 year extension. If he's healthy the sell would be he can still get a huge contract at 30 years old. The sell for the Knicks is he expires same time as Melo and that opens a nice window to add elite talent next to KP/Will/etc

my preference would be to wait and see that he's not damaged goods. the downside is obviously that it will cost a lot more the close to UFA he gets. if he stays healthy and gets to UFA he will get a max deal. but it seems crazy to assume that he will (1) be healthy by contract signing time and (2) remains healthy throughout his contract

I think my preference would be to lock him into something right around the all star break. I think that would be long enough for me to be comfortable with the risk; and the years would be short enough to not be a complete nightmare if he breaks

I would like to wait until later in the season of course, but if things go well, there is a huge advantage to offering him this contract. 3 years instead of 4 would be huge. And i would be very concerned that the Knicks would strike out on other options and settle for giving him near-conley money. Would like to avoid that altogether, and this would be a reasonable option.

Why would Rose negotiate against his own best interest?..I saw one suggestion that Rose take less money to come back in another thread..

Remember this thread was posted after he had his best game of the season. Tomorrow if he plays horribly there will be a thread about trying to unload him for Rubio.

Also, Chris Paul could potentially be on the market next off-season.

We would have to feel there is a reasonable chance to get CP3. Melo should know that. I am sure he will relay that info to Phil. Otherwise, there aren't any other great, realistic options. Jrue Holiday intrigues me, but after the turnaround he has led in New Orleans, there is no way they don't give him Conley money. And he's probably just as injury-prone as Rose when it comes down to it. Otherwise, i see no other real options.

this would be ideal... Was Conley even healthy when he got that deal? Didnt he just have an injury going into the offseason?

I think its also very possible we see large deals at the deadline, including Rose... trading him might be the best usage of that asset.

Nice convo. I doubt any of it gets made available for public digestion.
Nalod thinks that early deal is a good one. He plays 82 games, the price goes up, but only if other teams will pay it.

Who has max money for Rose, and wants him as well?

its another year with tons of cap space and limited FAs. Look at some of these contracts given out... $18mm for Alan Crabbe but not $25mm for Rose? Totally a sellers market. If reasonably healthy Rose is getting paid. Just something we need to deal with.

First we should look for upgrade at the deadline, then we should look at extension.
No rush at this point. If somebody want to take him off our hands they will need to pay the price and then test his luck.
Why we should be in position we put others to be in for a change?
Can we get some break from customary MSG stupidity?

It will be the same thing as every year. We will want everyone to sign with us for less than they will get other places. The good value deals will be few and far between. With Porzingis, Hernangomez, and Kuz, we have 3 rotation players under contract long-term. Maybe we can get a solid rotation player from the draft. That's 4 low-priced rotation players. Out of a 10-man rotation. That's pretty good.

That kind of deal actually isn't bad. They have time to mull it over and see how things work out this year. Just keep in perspective what the big contract for Conley could lead to:

Memphis Grizzlies guard Mike Conley Jr. is out indefinitely with a lower back injury, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski. He suffered a transverse process fracture in the vertebrae and is reportedly expected to miss six to eight weeks, per ESPN.com’s Jeff Goodman.

Conley went down hard while taking a charge in the third quarter of Memphis’ 104-85 loss against Charlotte on Monday. The Grizzlies were 9-21 last season, including the playoffs, without their starting point guard in the rotation. They are 0-1 without him this year.

Any player can go down any time. This is the nature of the game.
That's why no team should put all eggs in on basket meaning most of the cup for for one player.
We already have Noah and Melo eating 50 millions which is a half of the NEW cap.
Adding 25 mils for another veteran with bad health history is beyond stupid.

If you extend Rose for like another 2 years ala Westbrook and the team really really wants CP3 - and CP3 wants to come to NY - a trade of those players (sign and trade for CP3) can always happen.

Of course any player can get injured! The difference here is that we took a low risk shot on Rose and if they did do a deal for $25 mil per that isn't that bad. Plus there's no rush and they get to see Rose in action over most of the season. I was against a huge Conley deal cuz I felt he was a guy that is somewhat frail even tho he's in great shape he's kind of a slightly built guy.

We can sign Rose who looks better every day. Or, if we're still struggling at the deadline we can trade him for something good. We can't lose with Rose....unless he gets hurt.

I'm not a huge fan of how Rose has been playing but he's been playing well enough to warrant a reward. If he plays even 70 games this season, he's going to command a lot more than 75 mm for 3 years. He's going to want a superstar contract ASAP. My thinking is that we should trade him at the deadline while his value will probably be very high. Who who? I don't know but there will be people interested. I don't think he'll be worth the contract he can potentially get.
