Unless he has an opt out I don't think he can. NBA Players Assoc is a strong union.

cant do that. its illegal
Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better

This is stupid. Bazemore is about to be making $18 milly a year and you think melo's contract is a problem?

I thought I saw 19-20. Hopefully he signs with the rockets.

Melo doesn't need to do anything, that's not how the CBA works.

If you're going to point fingers at anyone, it's Phil, he resigned and maxed the guy and agreed with the NTC.

This is worse than that thread about trading KP for a UFA that Briggs started yesterday. At least that would be allowed if before the trade dradline. This isn't even allowed.

In regards to his contract, he isn't overpaid anymore. All-stars are basically taking a discount now with people like Batum and possibly Crabbe getting maxed. Get out of here with this nonsense.

we now live in a world where Ken Bazemore, a decent player by all accounts, but nothing more than a decent starter/first man off the bench type will make $18-19 a year. No matter how much you hate Melo somehow his contract isn't so crazy anymore.

Eh, the contract is less bad but I still would not want him taking up 1/4th of the team's total cap space. I wouldn't give out these other ridiculous contracts either. I'd go with small deals and save cap space (assuming we can't get KD). I bet by February, some teams will be willing to give up assets just to get out of these contracts. It would be great to have cap space and be able to absorb a bad contract with a lot of compensation added. I'd rather be the team that benefits from other teams' mistakes this off-season.

I thought they were required to spend money when the cap goes up under the CBA? Not sure the exact rules but I'm fairly certain some of the spending is forced.

Interesting. It looks like we have to spend 90% of the cap. So we could only save about $9 mil in room. That could still be helpful but it's not as helpful as I thought. Either way, KD is the only player I would give a large contract to this summer. (I'd at least think about it with Whiteside.)

Thanks for looking it up. I don't disagree that this spending insane. I literally was looking forward to waking up and having a laugh. The Moz contract and Beal (He is pretty closed to the highest paid layer in the league if those numbers are correct) did that for me.

On Whiteside, I was afraid of a max because he has been beat up even though extremely productive. In regards to the question you asked in the other thread, here is a link to where I saw no LA. Portland was listed, but I don't know if he actually spoke to them. LA was a great fit for him. Basically just Mavs and Heat, which is a recurring them. Tax free states. He didn't outright say it but I connected the dots.

If he could and would restructure his contract, we'd just sign more over-the-hill oft-injured players to multi-year contracts that would mess up our cap space in future years.

No he doesn't.

Batum just got maxed out. Derozen 25MM, the league is going to kill itself slowly with these stupid contracts

If Anderson is worth 20mil then what is Melos worth? In the end Melo actually did accept less by taking the long term deal.

Why would we do that when he's on a good deal for us for a star player?
