Every team has at least $20 million to spend this off season and they know that if these players were offered the same amount of money from New York and Utah that they'll pick New York but a lot of these players are getting ready to get their first big contract and maybe their only big contract so they're not gonna turn down millions of dollars knowing that this could be their last big contract they ever sign and these lower market teams know that this is their chance to get a good name to come to their team so they won't mind over paying to get them. The Knicks are gonna need to strike fast on a big name before that player is able to do his rounds and hear other offers from some of these teams so i hope Phil knows exactly which player he wants the most and hopefully can come away with a legit center and SG as quick as he possibly can before their prices get out of hand.
worst thing to do would be to strike fast. everyone has money but there are only a certain amount of roster spots. once that first wave of signings is off the board teams will have a lot more leverage as the number of starting spots and rotation spots dwindles.
this is reminiscent of NFL free agency - every year the worst contracts are the ones handed out in that first day. even last year, Greg Monroe (LOL) was the big free agent and Milwaukee less than 12 months later couldn't be more eager to get rid of him.
Phil will be patient.
