Read that Knicks have cap holds on D.Will, L.Thomas, & L.Galloway while still having about 30 million to spend in free agency.
So I suppose we can max out our free agent budget then re-sign our cap holds exceeding the cap?

This would be key to ensure we have a decent bench.

Not exactly, I don't think they were counting D. Will cap hold which is $5.28m. He obviously wants more so they will likely renounce him because they only have his non-bird rights which will not get him the kind of contract he wants.

The knicks can go over the cap for Thomas and Gallo. However, if a team offers Thomas more than a 104% league's avg then they will have to dip into their cap space to match.

It's part of the early- bird rights. A team can either offer a player 175% raise from their previous salary or 104.5% more than the league's avg salary.
