End of 3rd USA down by 8.Italy is raining 3s on USA and playing good D.USA wont take an outside shot.Their shooter Vassili(sp) is killing them from way beyond the arc.

I'm not wathing the game, but I guess this does not surprise me...USA has a very young team and not very many players known for playing defense. Very sad.

They are down by 18! The refs are making some bogus calls against USA but even if they didnt,it wouldnt alter the game by much. They know USA wont take the outside shot so they are collapsing on them and making stops.

They lost by 17.They took maybe 4 shots from the perimeter in the 2nd half.No pick and rolls, just layup or dunk attempts.Wade was awful,I dont know why Marbury wasnt playing the second half since Wade was doing squat.Brown wasnt doing a good job either, bad substitutions and no adjustments.

it takes time to build chemistry which is a trait often overlooked. the pistons were the epitome of chemistry. mixing and matching a bunch of players takes some time unless they're extremely lucky and/or complimentary.

in all fairness, usa should send their nba champions to the olympics. it's 2 out of every four years (1 for the qualifiers and 1 for the olympics the following year). that way, the team already knows each other and the coach's system, plus, they're the world f'n champs.

this should serve as a good wake up call. This is no cake walk... lets see these guys come together and play defense. They have no good shooter to break up the zone, and thats going to kill them in the international game. Its going to come down to defense and creating easy baskets.

I think the "they've been playing together for years" excuse is crap.

Fact is that these international teams are made up of players who play professional basketball in leagues all over Europe (and elsewhere?!).

The single advantage of other teams is that they're used to the international rules... which I suppose is a big advantage.

The NBA game relies quite a bit on individual talent on offense, while FIBA relies on teamwork and excellent shooting all-around. Tendency around the NBA is for stars to try to take over when all else fails. I guess that's a good practice when your teammates suck. :)

He did in the opening minutes of the second half, drove to the rim and made a beautiful wrap around pass on a 2 on 1 which led to a bucket, right after that he was pulled for the rest of the game in favor of Wade who did zip.

i watched the game and here are my thoughts

A. NO way and I mean no WAY can you go with that starting line up. It's way to small and uncoordinated.

B. I would go with size to start the game and cut it to a 10 man rotation

C- Duncan
PF Stoudemire
SF Marion
SG Anthony
PG Iversen
C Boozer
SF Odom
G Wade
G Marbury
G James
the first wave comes at the other team with size. the second team comes at the other team with speed

you CANNOT help defend in the lane if you do they kick it out on your man every time

we need to play 10X smarter on the D and work in cohesion on the O--that means keeping the same 5 guys together in 2 sets

hail mary

I love it. I knew the moment the first USA basketball player came up with a lame excuse not to go that we'd have a repeat of the World Championships. Good thing is LArry Brown is coaching, so he might be able to pull another miracle out of his bag of tricks, as he did the Pistons vs. the Lakers. The sad thing is that Italy is not even one of the top teams. And can't use the refs as the reason, we all know in the NBA they get away with murder and non-calls. Time for these guys to suck it in and take it to the other teams, period.

USA needs shooters. The international game is different.

Funny, a guy like KVH: big, can run and shoot is the kind of guy they need.

I came away with the same impression. Didn't see that whole game, but enough to know how they were being beaten.

Italy was on FIRE from downtown. BIG FLAMING FIRE. And they played a collapsing zone to negate Duncan and the rest of the muscle inside. With a zone like that you need shooter and USA didn't have them like Italy did.

I think the refs called a horrible game - one sided towards Italy.

The refs always call one-sided games in international competition becuase they all hate the US.

This team, the way its set up, makes me wonder if the people who are running it even WATCH international competition. Why guys like Brent Barry, Keith Van Horn, and Mike Redd weren't asked to come is beyond me.

This team has ZERO shooters.

Ray Allen and Mike Bibby are sitting at home right now, they sure would've helped this team.
