If you watched the press conference where Hornacek was introduced, it was clear that Phil was ceding control and style of play to him. From a Bleacher Report article about the presser:

"Hornacek talked about implementing pieces of the offense he ran with the Suns, including "quick pace" and "significant [pick-and-roll] usage."

The 2013-14 Suns, the team that Hornacek coached that won 48 games in a brutally tough West and had a top 10 offense, led the League in pace. Knicks last year had the slowest pace, the lowest amount of fast break points. If Hornacek was going to coach the way he wanted to, we need a point guard who could push it. Guess what - we got one.

Also, take a look at that Suns team. Who started 82 games for them at C? Channing Frye (6'11 250). Who did Frye usually play with - a stretch 4 power forward in one of the Morris twins. Who do the Knicks have like that? Porzingis (7'3 240) and Carmelo, our two best player last year.

If nothing else this trade means the team is going to be playing Hornacek's style, which is a good thing. Phil is going to let him bring us into the 21st century of the NBA. We don't need a C, because Porzingis is going to play a ton of C. Melo is going to play a ton of PF. With the way with NBA is going, that's a great thing. Melo's best year as a Knick involved him playing a ton of 4.

This team really does NOT need a C - all these reports of Dwight, Noah, Pau, they don't make any sense. Porzingis is 7'3, and the other guy we have under contract is O'Quinn, who is a backup C. I assume Hernangomez is coming over as well. That would give us plenty of front court pieces. What we need are more guards and more wings who can play up and down.

I would guess starting tonight we'll see more of this. Expect a trade (or draft pick) for a guard or a wing, and that is where the emphasis in free agency will be as well.

We do need a Center. Even Golden State employed Bogut, Varejao, and Ezili for at least 15-20 minutes a game.

You do not want 20 year old still growing KP to absorb that many minutes at the Center position. Yes, we all agree, he's destined for the Center position, but let him grow into it, no need to rush him and risk major injury.

We don't need a marquee center either. Just a high BBall IQ, willing to battle for boards, 15-20 minutes a game, decent passing big that can start 1st and 3rd quarters, since we'll probably use alot of small ball lineups with KP at the 5.

The ideal big for this upcoming season would be Pau Gasol. Just his presence and experience would rub off immensely on Porzingis.

I think Gasol goes to the Spurs or maybe Warriors.

But I think we have a pretty decent shot at Noah.

Question is do we have enough cap to sign Pau, a legit 2 like DeRozan or Batum, and some additional role players. Pau isn't getting max obviously but I don't think he'd be as cheap as someone like Noah either. Ideally we don't eat too much into the cap for next year's FA either unless it's for players that are part of the long term future.

Agree. I don't think we can sign Pau, as he probably wants a 2 or 3 year deal in his last years in the league. But any decent big on a 1 year rental is good for the Knicks, to spare KP the pounding he'll take against bigger and stronger players at the moment.

our depth chart looks something like this. i have put in brackets the guys who we have either rights to or RFA:

PG: Rose, [Galloway]
SG: ???, Holliday
SF: ???, [Lance]
PF: Melo, [Hernangomez]
C: Porzingis, O’Quinn

if you are trying to allocate $30 million wisely, you don't go sign a C for big $. we have no starting 2 or 3! and really Holliday is an end of the bench guy, i think we need 3 wings and perhaps a backup PG as well.

GS employed Bogut, Varejao and Ezili for 15-20 a game, great, and we have O'Quinn on the roster making $4m a year to do that as well. otherwise it'll be KP, the 7 foot 3 inch dude we have that everyone is afraid to put at his natural position.

I hope it isn't KP, he's only 240lbs soaking wet after a Shake Shack double.

I'd take a Zaza Pachulia or Ian Mahinmi on a 1 year deal in a heartbeat.

Good stuff! I think this is pretty much dead on! Hornacek is gonna want bigs that can move and shoot. He wants to play FAST! So we can surmise that he will want to fill the roster with players that can facilitate uptempo. Guards and Wings will be at the top of the list. If they add a C I suspect he will be a very mobile big who can shoot.

This is quickly turning into another major roster rebuild. KP, Rose, Melo, KOQ and Holiday are the only signed players!!! That's wild to think about.

I haven't followed Hornacek during his stint in Phoenix. How was the defense?
No defense, no championship. We have currently no good to great defender on the roster.

Rose and Melo are decent at best. KP has a tremendous potential, he's a good defender but he's not superstar yet.
Thomas was good, I liked Gallo but we need great defenders. Lopez was helping a lot on that side. It's a terrible trade.

Phil is letting Hornacek dictate style of play. Also, we don't need a Center!
