If you watched the press conference where Hornacek was introduced, it was clear that Phil was ceding control and style of play to him. From a Bleacher Report article about the presser:
"Hornacek talked about implementing pieces of the offense he ran with the Suns, including "quick pace" and "significant [pick-and-roll] usage."
The 2013-14 Suns, the team that Hornacek coached that won 48 games in a brutally tough West and had a top 10 offense, led the League in pace. Knicks last year had the slowest pace, the lowest amount of fast break points. If Hornacek was going to coach the way he wanted to, we need a point guard who could push it. Guess what - we got one.
Also, take a look at that Suns team. Who started 82 games for them at C? Channing Frye (6'11 250). Who did Frye usually play with - a stretch 4 power forward in one of the Morris twins. Who do the Knicks have like that? Porzingis (7'3 240) and Carmelo, our two best player last year.
If nothing else this trade means the team is going to be playing Hornacek's style, which is a good thing. Phil is going to let him bring us into the 21st century of the NBA. We don't need a C, because Porzingis is going to play a ton of C. Melo is going to play a ton of PF. With the way with NBA is going, that's a great thing. Melo's best year as a Knick involved him playing a ton of 4.
This team really does NOT need a C - all these reports of Dwight, Noah, Pau, they don't make any sense. Porzingis is 7'3, and the other guy we have under contract is O'Quinn, who is a backup C. I assume Hernangomez is coming over as well. That would give us plenty of front court pieces. What we need are more guards and more wings who can play up and down.
I would guess starting tonight we'll see more of this. Expect a trade (or draft pick) for a guard or a wing, and that is where the emphasis in free agency will be as well.
