It's a character issue to try to get the best contract you can? PLEASE. There are *real* problems among NBA players that qualify as character issues. This is far from one of them.

I think that Mercury news story and the subsequent Times story tried to workd the whole history of all the deal permutations into a top paragraph. I think it's wrong.

Read more carefully. I said it's a minor issue compared to the absolute cave that the deal has become. Are you one of those: "the Knicks can do no wrong" fans, regardless of the manifest facts?

Hey, this team will never be under the cap. Get over it. Seriously.

What we do have for next summer are Penny, Tim and Nazr becoming the elusive expiring deals. That can net us something nice, possibly as soon as this all-star break.

And relax about Damps. Our chances of getting him are at about 25%.

Knicks in Agreement to Acquire Bulls' Crawford
By THE NEW YORK TIMES

Published: August 4, 2004

fter weeks of negotiating, the Knicks have agreed on a deal to acquire guard Jamal Crawford from the Chicago Bulls, his agent said last night.

"They've come to an agreement as far as players," Crawford's agent, Aaron Goodwin, said. "We're trying to work out details that work out for Jamal. I'm confident we'll have something by tomorrow."

The Knicks would receive Crawford and Jerome Williams for Dikembe Mutombo, Othella Harrington, Frank Williams and Cezary Trybanski.

Although the Knicks would be getting the best player in the deal, they are surrendering four expiring contracts, the chips that they had hoped to use in other deals. Crawford, a restricted free agent, must agree to a seven-year, $55 million deal to make the numbers work.

"I'm very optimistic it's done," Goodwin said. "Unless for some reason New York changes their mind, I think Chicago is on board.''

I don't think all those players are involved.

Well they got a quote from the agent which leads me to believe the Times spoke to him about the players involved which would be strange if he was out of the loop on this but who knows?

There is no rational basketball reason why the Knicks can't get under the cap when Houston's contract expires.

Nope, and it's not even a minor issue to me; it's just part of negotiating but you can make a big (or even little) deal out of it if it makes you happy. Cheers

Some of you guys remind me of baseball fans that want to trade every prospect so your team can win now, and then you wonder why your team can't win because they have no young homegrown core to build around.

Do you keep focusing on a minor point because you know that you can't rebut the major point?

Rich, you remind me of the Hawks or Clippers GM who thinks the way to rebuild is to get under the cap.

I think they are significantly greater than 25%.

Well, frankly, you also think we can get Vince Carter which is pretty absurd. I actually think Damps may take the MLE or that the Knicks and GSW could do a straight up trade of Kurt for Dampier (Kurt has a 15% trade kicker and the 15% rule on top of that means we could offer Damp 30% more than Kurt makes right now)... so okay, there's a decent shot to get Damps.

[/quote]I don't know if we can get Vince Carter, but I do know we are gonna try to. Dampier is gonna be in town Wednesday to meet again with Zeke, I don't know why he would be if they couldn't get something done. Do you? When I want to be absurd, I will be.

If Dampier signed for the MLE for one year, I would be happy. Then Baker can't get anything but the LLE.
