New York Knicks: Jeff Hornacek Do Not Take The Job
by Joshua Simons 5 hours ago
The New York Knicks and Jeff Hornacek have technically not agreed to a contract yet, so he should get out before it is too late.
Jeff Hornacek is close to signing a contract to become the next Head Coach of the New York Knicks. My advice to Hornacek: Don’t do it. It’s a bad situation that will ruin your coaching reputation forever.
Phil Jackson, entering his third year as the Knicks’ President, will technically be working with his fourth head coach already. His selection of former player Derek Fisher didn’t pan out, and his replacement, interim head coach Kurt Rambis did nothing to show he deserves a chance at the having his interim tag removed.
Progress has been at best incremental, so how much more patience does Jackson have to see this rebuild through? He turns 71 years old in the fall, and has accomplished so much as a coach, that a failure to turn around the Knicks is unlikely to tarnish his reputation as a coaching legend.
Why stick around? His fiance, Lakers part owner Jeanie Buss, is on the other coast. If he has the itch to still be involved in an NBA team in some capacity, Jeanie could certainly make him a consultant for the Lakers.
This is the situation that Hornacek would be entering if he does sign on as Knicks coach. Without a first round pick, and an aging Carmelo Anthony, the team is left with Kristaps Porzingis as the only real building block of the team.
How much better can we realistically expect the Knicks to be next year? Barring tremendous progress, I predict Jackson will leave, leaving the Knicks with the need to redo their front office once again. And a new front office usually means a new head coach.
For Knicks fans, this scenario is nothing new. Jackson hired Derek Fisher rather than sticking with Mike Woodson, because he wanted a Head Coach who would run the triangle offense. Before that, former Knicks President Donnie Walsh hired his own coach in Mike D’Antoni.
Even in Brooklyn, the Nets GM Sean Marks hired his own Head Coach in Kenny Atkinson. The formula; new general manager equals new head coach. Is this really where Hornacek wants to coach? I don’t see him as lasting more than two seasons before being let go with a very poor record, and never getting another Head Coaching job in the NBA.
How can I get paid to do this (?)
No -- really. I can do that . . .
