Discussion about this player.

He's such an unknown but how many players are there on this earth at 7-1 with a 37 inch vertical and his skills?

I havent really processed this guy for the Knicks but if this guy went to college for a year say at Kentucky--would he be the 2017 number 1 or 2 pick?

I think we've all been "guard" focused + we have a 7-3 F but is this guy just way too much to pass up if he drops to what is being predicted? There are only a couple of guys worthy of trading a 2017 for--but the more I think that this guy could be 1. I have him 10 on my mock--I just think no way there are more than 9 better prospects no matter what the position. He looks like hes a professional trainer away from being something between a Shaq and a KG type?

I think back to Giannis with this player. He went 15 but he is easily a top 3 player from his draft. If this guys still stranding in the 20's is that the type of player we go in for? I think guards will fall into rd 2 but how hard is it to find guys like this?

i was thinking along the same lines. I would like the knicks to get at least two picks if they picked Thon Maker. Maker I think Maker is a draft and stash candidate but instead of Europe, stash him in the DL. Yes, you want to hit on late picks but I'd go for the one with the most upside especially since the knocks are rebuilding.

If I remember correctly Kristaps was considered a late 1st when he was around Maker's age but made improvements as a 19 y/o during his season for Sevilla.

Nice discussion but the workouts will tell his story.
If he went to college he might be found very wanting.
He is tall, he can jump, but can he play basketball?
What is our trade bait to get into this draft besides 3mm in cash?

The only thing Id consider using in any respect for any draft pick is that Im not interested in a pick above 23(targeting Boston and Philly additional picks). The compensation offer would be a 2019 #1 pick with restriction to 17 until it conveys over 5 years and if it doesnt goes to two 2nd rounders in the 6th. What the deal is is moving their asset into another year--they have way to many this year. Can I get a player like a Thon Maker in 2020 at pick #20? I dont think so? Im not inclined to use is on a guard--there will be too many that fall to rd 2 where there are multiple teams who wont be able to draft 3-4 players and we can use $$. This is just an idea to be thrown around--he would make a very interesting 3rd wheel upfront. I understand fully how badly we need to upgrade the backcourt. Im just wondering outloud if the investment in Maker--and Derrick Jones is just too attractive for the future of the team in a risk reward scenario for me to bypass. I think what you are looking at is two future lottery picks you can get for pennies on the dollar right now.

if they can sign him undrafted or get him with the 56th pick I'm cool with it... that said the Knicks need guards. The Knicks have a lot of bigs. I don't see the Knicks prioritizing big man development over that of the guards

I remember his name being talked about 2/3 years back but never kept up with him. So where did he end up playing basketball for the last 2/3 years??

I had to stop reading when you asked if you could get a player like Thon Maker in 2020 at pick #20 and said you don't think so. How the hellz do you know what any team or about any of the players in the 2020 draft?? Hahahahaha

I don't agree with this and think we still need a better big man to come off the bench for Rolo. One that can play defense, rebound and even have some offense which we don't have with KOQ and we really have no idea what Willy will be for us. Our biggest needs are absolutely both guard spots but i would love to get a legit big man as well.

We don't have any picks yet, and now we're going to draft a PG, SG, and a big? There are limited, competing resources and the Knicks backourt was trash last year. I would focus the resources on the backcourt and hopefully become a .500 team next year

It should be about best player available, If Thon is that then the knicks should draft him over any guards available. It's not like this is a great guard draft to begin with

this isn't a great draft period so I think this year more than others you take need into consideration. I would much rather take a chance on a guy like Caris LeVert than Thon Maker...

Thanks for the explaining your position. The complexity of the cap in this era makes 1st round picks and players on rookie scale very important. It also creates a problem if you have too many players coming off those deals. The idea is solid but remember those restictions have time limits and its possible that restrictions lifts at a time we in Lottery again, then its another disaster. Can't run a team in fear, but can't be ignorant of the possibility. After all, we has see that as well.

I said that the guard spots are the most important but we still need another big man and depending on how Phil decides to spend our cap money there could be room to help our back court and get a big man especially if we can get a veteran big man to come in and help us like getting D.Lee to come back and if Wroten can get his athleticism back then him and Grant could fill our PG spot if Phil decides to spend big at the SG spot. It actually might be a good idea to let Grant and Wroten take the PG spot for next season so we can see if one of them could step up and be our full time starter and if neither can then next years crop of free agents PG's is very nice so we can go after one of them and use Grant and Wroten off the bench. If both Afflalo and DW opt out which is almost a guarantee and we stretch Calderon we could have $30 to $36 million in cap room this off season.

This is not just about needs for this year though and which ever player projects better needs to be taken regardless of position. Like I said before hopefully the knicks can get two or more picks. If Thon is there and he is the best available I would take him.

Now Caris is an interesting case. I think injuries sometimes hide possible gems in the draft. Sometimes players are punish for playing through an injury because of their numbers drop. I do like Caris but his injury history scares me along with the fact that his injury shortened junior year was his best year but who knows. If Caris passes medical and they think he has the speed to play on the NBA level he would also be a good option.

Ill add one more guy --Aj Hammons--I have him at 17. If they were trying to emulate an Andrew Bynum--hes 7-1 280 with the same long arms as Bynum. I have him #17 but hes listed in the mocks from 28-45. The last C prospect will fall out of the draft Ochefu from Villainova--but again Hammons is 7-1 280 pretty athletic and mobile.

Hes more ready than a Maker so another option if he fell into rd 2

Even though our resources are limited, I believe that 2 draft picks, 2 free agents and the retention of some of our current roster can maker for an adequate, if not exciting team for the upcoming season. We've already added Wroten, and Hermangomez is slated to be with us too. This will surely be an upgrade over last years' roster.

Im just wondering outloud if the investment in Maker--and Derrick Jones is just too attractive for the future of the team in a risk reward scenario for me to bypass. I think what you are looking at is two future lottery picks you can get for pennies on the dollar right now.

I'd trade Robin Lopez to Boston for Amir Johnson as well as picks 16 and 23. The hope would be to finagle Denzel Valentine and Thon Maker with those picks....but the chances are that both guys would be gone by then. Like yellowboy suggests, I'd stash Thon Maker but look to work Valentine into an Evan Turner type role in our rotation.

And for the record, both guys were players that BRIGGS put me onto. Good find BRIGGS.

I didnt find Thon Maker hes been around now for awhile. The thing Im suggestioning is that IF this guy is available where its being purported right now 28-40--is that just too much of an opportunity not to look at despite our need for guards? Right now Im not fully understanding why hes not higher--but someone made a valid point that KP was listed in the 20's as well the year before and then hes a op 3 player.. I guess KP wouldve eventually went 13 in that previous draft if he stayed in. When you look at Thon physically it makes me think of Shaq at LSU. The fact that he is 7-1 and does a 37 inch vertical--when he fills out and hes 260-275 or so--with his skill base--is this a guy that teams will cry that they missed on? I dont see wht Bender has that Maker does not? Im scared of a player who avg 4-2 in any league. Why is Bender suggested at 3-4 and Maker 28-40? Doesnt make sense.
