http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/rpm/_/sort/RPM/position/1

Yesterday afternoon looking for some guards that play defense, I stumbled on this.

-Ricky Rubio has been around the top in Defensive RPM consistently. Add in his elite playmaking and he would fill in 2 huge needs for us. Question is are Wolves willing to part with him and what would be the price

-Victor Oladipo a lot of 2 way potential, offensive production, playmaking abililty. Top 10 in Defensive RPM and top 15 in Offensive RPMs. They have a crowded back court he may be available before they have to pay . Would have to give up 2018 draft pick if not more though.

-Jared Dudley 30 yrs old, but would be an upgrade over D.Williams given his defense, and shooting. He will probably want to play for a contender though
-Omri Casspi looks to be trending upward and would also be an upgrade over D.Williams.

-Amare, Frye, Lee all have real good Defensive RPMs. But they all get limited mins so that might be the glitch.

-Kyle Korver and Mike Dunleavy held pretty damn good Offensive and Defensive RPMs last season.

-Spurs with Ginobli, Green, Leonard, West, Aldridge, Duncan: Have a lot of players with high positive DRPMs.
-As do Golden State with Bogut, Green, Iggy, Curry, Ezeli
-Nikola Jokic has the 3rd highest RPMS amoung centers as a rookie.

-Amoung the Knicks main rotational players. Only Melo, KP, Lopez have a positive Defensive RPM.
-Tony Wroten's Defensive RPMs last yr when he put up 16-5-5 was one of the worst ratings in the league for Guards unfortunately(Worse then Hardaway jr).
-Lopez DRPM are lower then I thought they would be

you have to factor in minutes played, which the poster did. amare is playing less than 15 minutes a game.

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

Yea its pretty easy to see through that since he has only played 39 games at 15mins. Which is probably junk mins vs other non impact players. The players who get good mins consistently hold more weight.

Victor Oladipo is definitely the young type of prospect you trade for. He's a good two way player still with room to grow

The thread isnt about validating RPM. More so to see who and how can we upgrade our perimeter defense.

Most of the players who are known for good defense have positive DRPMs while players who aren't have negative DRPMs. Its not out of the question that given Amare's limited action he was able to have a positive impact on defense. His DRPMs were negative the previous 2 yrs. But there is enough matches throughout for it to be scoffed at due to an aberration.

This stat is often considered worse than PER. If it has any value, you likely have to look at several seasons of data rather than one season for each player (and certainly not a tiny amount of minutes in one season in Amare's case).

which statistics do you look at?

i like rpm, usage vis a vis assist rate and the resulting ratio, TS%

I usually look only at the win shares. If I want to spend more time, I'll look at the tracking data. I don't get paid to do this for a living, and haven't kept up with the latest developments, though.
