http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/14952648/phil-jackson-discusses-new-york-knicks-point-guard-situation-other-topics

LOS ANGELES -- New York Knicks president Phil Jackson said he won't be obsessed with finding a star point guard, in part because the triangle offense hasn't required one.

"Chasing a point guard, where it becomes just an obsession, isn't necessary. It's not necessary. We can play the game without that," Jackson said Friday at Staples Center.

Jackson pointed to the success that the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers had running the triangle; neither franchise relied on a ball-dominant point guard during his tenures as coach.

Phil Jackson maintained that all his energy is toward turning around the Knicks. Adam Hunger/USA TODAY Sports

"We went to a two-guard format, and I think we were successful at it," he said. "I think we caught a lot of people in the league by surprise because of the way we played. So it works, and we know it works."

The Knicks will have at least $18 million to spend in free agency this summer. If Jackson's statements Friday hold true, it seems unlikely they will chase an elite free-agent point guard such as Mike Conley or Rajon Rondo. (It's worth noting that Rondo said last month that he's unlikely to consider the Knicks in free agency because of the triangle.)

Jackson noted that the Knicks will try to develop their guards from within. He mentioned Tony Wroten, whom they expect to sign in the coming days, as one player who could add depth at the position.

"Our process is going on [and] it's a little underground, a little beneath the surface, but this is one of our desires, that we have to have a penetrator and we have to have somebody that can handle those roles," he said.

Jackson also said interim coach Kurt Rambis is "perfectly capable" of coaching the team permanently. He noted that Rambis' record as head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves (32-132) puts a "black mark on his coaching ability at first sight." But he added that Rambis, with whom he has a close relationship, has "a way of handling players. He's relaxed but he has the ability to keep them focused on the important parts of it."

Jackson said part of his evaluation of Rambis will be based on how the Knicks finish the season. The club is 4-8 since Rambis took over for the fired Derek Fisher last month. The team is 27-39 overall.

Jackson also addressed his future with the Knicks

There had been some speculation that he could leave New York before the end of his five-year contract. Jackson's deal, according to ESPN's Chris Broussard, contains an opt-out clause after the 2016-17 season. But the team president said he's fully committed to the Knicks and fulfilling his contract.

"Well, I'm in L.A. right now [and] I'm enjoying it," Jackson said with a smile. "But this is another part of my life. The energy that I have is directed toward turning this team around, and it's taken my full effort so far. It's been a challenge and I'm still in it and I'm in it to win it, so to speak."

Jackson revealed that he recently spoke to star forward Carmelo Anthony about the future of the franchise. Jackson said he believes Anthony, 31, is committed to New York, which is something the All-Star himself has said recently.

"He sees the potential that we have," Jackson said. "He had questions about where we're going. So we discussed it."

Of prized rookie Kristaps Porzingis, Jackson said, "Our phenom, our kid that has surprised everybody, hit the wall and it's been tough for him in the process."

Porzingis has been productive lately, but his numbers have dipped some from the first half of the season. He started the year with 18 double-doubles but hasn't recorded one in a month.

Phew! I was worried we were going to try to update the Triangle to adjust to the way the league plays and the way the new rules work! WHAT A RELIEF.

Listen to the interview if you get a chance. He covers this very well and he provides reasons for this.

Your mistake, like many others, is that the Triangle needs to be updated by focusing on a Pure PG. That has never been key to the success of the Offense. Unless you think that Phil's Bulls and Lakers teams were flawed because they didn't have signature PG's.

Guards are needed but he's had more success with Combo Guards, Shooting Guards and Small Forwards that have good driving, passing skills and defense.

LOL. I'm with you on this 100% crzy...Phil comes across as a huge oddball to me every time he opens his mouth now. Real odd duck, I swear. So touchy & defensive. And so rigid and unyielding--his way or the highway, you know? He can criticize people until the cows come home--in his book, to the media etc.--but God forbid anyone has something to say about him. Then they're wrong and don't know what the hell they're talking about? Is that it? Nah, not buyin' it, sorry..

Defending his triangle to the death is starting to wreak of nothing more than pride. So strange and childish--how 'bout you say "we know we have a lot of work to do. We plan on exploring all avenues available to us to get better" and leave it at that. Why the mind games? Why the rhetoric? Why go out of your way to eliminate a certain type of player? Makes ZERO sense to me--shows me he very well may not be open to all possibilities. How 'bout we acknowledge that that might be a "mistake," huh? Hey, his words, man, not mine--I'm just trying to make sense of them...

So reflecting on his success with the Bulls and Lakers, the man says: "we went to a two-guard format, and I think we were successful at it. I think we caught a lot of people in the league by surprise because of the way we played. So it works, and we know it works." Huh? What the hell does that even mean? 'Two-guard format' as in shooting guard dominant? Yeah, OK buddy, you had the best 2 SGs in the history of the sport headlining those teams. Refuses to acknowledge that btw--like that had nothing to do with his success. LMAO. Then he turns around and criticizes Kobe in his book. Gimme a break--you don't win **** in LA w/o Kobe Bryant pal..Get over yourself, ya self-serving prick.. Or did he mean two-guard format as in two guards in the backcourt? WTF--every team features 2 guards in the backcourt, no? Sometimes teams will even go to a 3-guard alignment. Teams usually play a center, 2 forwards and 2 guards--that's the typical alignment. Hardly anything Phil revolutionized all by himself, right? Someone help me--I don't have a clue what the man's talking about. Not even sure Phil even knows either..

I love how he says we don't need a traditional PG but just a couple of weeks ago, he was all over trying to pry Jeff Teague or Dennis Schroder away from ATL in a trade. Now does that make any sense?? I thought he didn't want that type of player? I mean the man is talking semantics -- he doesn't need a top PG but then says that "we have to have a penetrator and we have to have somebody that can handle those roles." Come on, man--what the hell is the difference? Hey listen--if he's saying 'I don't want to pay Mike Conley--not interested in giving that guy a max contract nor allowing him to use us as leverage to get a max deal with Memphis or someone else' --OR-- 'Teague's not my type of guy but I sure like him a lot for only $8mm next yr' -- OK, I can get behind that...And if he's talking about getting those skills out of a bigger guard or 2 (again though--why the interest in Teague and Schroder then??), fine, I don't really care. I'd like to know who those big guards are though, who he has in mind. Tony Wroten? Hey, who knows--the odds are remote, this dude's coming off injury with a ton of question marks attached to him, but we won't know anything until he gets him in here and we see him in some game action. I mean is that ever gonna happen or what?? Hard to believe we haven't sealed the deal with Wroten yet. Why wait until the road trip's over? Where's the logic in that? Shows no sense of urgency to evaluate him at all and the games are dwindling.. I'd still argue that if we made some low-risk moves for a couple of the more talented DL-level guards out there several weeks ago (Russ Smith, Sean Kilpatrick, Elliot Williams, Tony Wroten, Terrico White just to name a few), we actually could've salvaged this season. But what did we do -- we continue to show undeserving loyalty to some pretty bad guards already on the team, wasted our time with Jimmer Fredette and now either can't or won't seal the deal with Wroten.

Look, I think the man realizes we need to up the talent level in a big way and deep down I think he also understands that the triangle is not gonna make us any better by itself. That's really all that matters--keep building this thing up every year until one day, hopefully we put a representative team out on the floor that's capable of playing competitive against the league's better clubs. And if it's with Melo--hopefully that comes sooner than later before the dude falls apart..All this other stuff is just nonsense. I don't even understand why the guy wastes his time.

^^^^Good points about the knicks trying to trade for a point guard. In the press conference Phil talked about how the bulls kept trying to get a point guard because the pistons had isiah and the cavs had price. He said that the bulls did fine without a dominant point and he wasn't going to chase that. Also talked about Jose and how he admired his game and thought he could be a 2 guard as well. I think he recognizes the deficit but isn't going to overpay and would be fine with a defensive point.

He's had big defensive PG's in the past. Pippen, Harper and Shaw played Pseudo PG for his team's. Technically they don't really have a PG that runs the entire floor. They split the floor for the most part, so any guard or SF would only have to make very simple reads.

We've played without a PG and the offense worked just fine. It's very important that he can solve the needs on Defense more than having a Pure PG. Not that he couldn't make it work with a Pure PG. Just that he doesn't have to as he said Chase that as if it's life or death.

I'm hoping Jerian and Wroten can develop into reliable guards that can defend as a high level and push the pace a good deal more. We really could use the extra easy buckets.

A couple of more things that bother me about Phil:

(1) Compare him to Pat Riley for a sec. Man, night and day imo. I know a lot of folks are probably still bitter about how things wrapped up here with Riley but you gotta give it to the guy, man--he gets it. Fully adaptable and open to any situation that presents itself--played Showtime ball with the Lakers; bully ball with the Knicks where he wanted to keep the scores in the 80-90s and win games with defense and brute strength and then he chose to gut his whole roster and sign 3 all-stars and then fill in around them with dirt cheap role players with the Heat. And he's still evolving the Heat after Lebron into something fresh and new...Bottom line--he showed great adaptability, doing whatever was best for the team not himself, and had great success every way--all very different approaches..Phil doesn't come close to showing that same type of open-mindedness/adaptability. Think about that. Looking at both guys, what they believe, what they're willing to do to have success, it's apples and oranges--no comparison. I take Riley over Jackson as an exec. every time.

(2) Heard the sound bite last night where Phil was discussing Melo, saying MELO has the NTC hinting that his hands are tied and that Melo will have to ask for and approve any trade. Man, I hope that doesn't mean he's not listening, taking phone calls and participating in any discussion about the possibility of moving him. I actually wouldn't mind seeing him initiate some of the talk. Eventually you gotta come to the realization that this may not work out here and come up with some scenarios that you think Melo may like/approve and then present them to him. If we ever want to move Melo it's up to Phil to be aggressive and look for solutions--can't wait for Melo to ask for a trade. That day may never come--I fell a complacency with Melo now, also get the feeling he thinks he can't walk out on NY which isn't true by a longshot. Phil's gotta make this happen eventually. He sounded defeated when talking about the subject, almost like "well, what's done is done." Things change, Phil. Go talk to Pat Riley about that...Hopefully that was some lip service and he's really keeping his mind open about moving Melo eventually...Hopefully he's keeping his mind open about A LOT OF THINGS! I just have my doubts after hearing him discuss things.

A playmaker will simply make things easier for KP. He's struggled a little bit, but look at where most of his offense is coming from. He's forced to create it himself. No easy baskets or dives to the rim to get him going. If he had a true playmaker, he would get 10 ppg on easy shots alone. Then add what he's already doing now.

I was shocked to find out that the PHO game was the first time this year a player broke 10 assists in a game. Just shocked.

The Knicks don't have 1 guard outside of a few moments where and there by Grant that make baskets easy for other players.

Jose, Gallo, AA, Sasha. Yuck

Berman is ridiculous.
but hinted the soon-to-be-signed young 76ers castoff Tony Wroten is someone to consider for next season as a starter.

Phil compared Wrotten to Ledo and talked about taking a look at him in the summer. Far from an endorsement for the fifteenth spot. Nothing at all implied about this kid starting.

This is why we can't have any sense of reason in NY. The Media are a pack of Jackals. They spend most of the time trying to make things look worse than they are. Negative and often exaggerating the truth or making things up!!!

Wroten is no different than a D Leaguer, UFA or late Draft Pick that you hope will turn out to be successful.
There have been many that have worked out better than expected but they aren't given any guarantees.

Based on Phil's comments, I have a feeling Nic Batum will be a high target this off-season. Big, versatile, playmaking guard.

I also think Evan Turner fits that bill. Maybe if we offer Turner the starting PG job?

Well for one I'm glad we don't have to worry about putting a quality 1 guard out there. It's really an overrated position. I mean what sucessful teams have a star pg as their centerpiece?

There's a difference between a Star PG and a Quality PG. You can't overlook the fact that Phil won all those titles without a Star PG. Just a few years ago he was in 3 straight finals without a star PG. So in terms of proof of his case, Phil has significant evidence on his side.

Tony Parker is high quality but he's not considered a Star PG. So if you look at the most recent titles you don't see a lot of Star PG's. Curry and Westbrook stand out, but it's not the end all be all factor in Finals teams.
