This team was .500 twice this season. 22-22!!! Even with our back court.
Then something snapped. two weeks later the coach was fired.

what happened? Fish was not listening to his mentors but that's not a fireable offense. Nor was the thing with women. He was married when he was hired and he was highly thought of as a young coaching prospect with a record of leadership.

We all have opinions. Mine is that on top of it all Fish was mailing it in and was not hungry. He has the potential but he was not eating, sleeping or dreaming it.
That said, its also not a firable offense.

What snapped this team into the tailspin that Fish was removed mid season?

I disagree with point 2. Fish's offcourt MBarnes crap was starting to smell a little too much like IT antics.
Phil might be an arrogant, self-absorbed icon, but a head coach who can't keep his wick clean doesn't any type of legacy make.

I think this franchise has very little room for a return to deranged back pages. Not at these prices.

Fisher's off the court decisions put him in a bad place with the leadership team. He was not being the leader and role model that Phil envisioned him being when he hired him. His influence on guys like Kevin Durant was supposed to carry over even more so when he was a coach, but the rumors with Tim Hardaway's girl, and the stuff with Matt Barnes, and the travel issues after the fight started adding up to a pattern. The fact that the Knicks were floating around .500 for so long was what kept Fisher in seat. It was going to be the first real losing streak that gave Phil the opening to fire him, and that is what happened. It's obvious that he couldn't fire him based on performance until that point. For all the criticism of Fisher as a coach, it's clear now that he didn't do a terrible job. He had that team playing solid basketball for awhile.

IMO Fisher did a good job motivating. Team competed and played hard. But he was a mediocre-to-poor coach when it came to Xs, Os, adjustments, rotations (essentially everything else). He never had that "it" factor and always seemed a step behind

The fact that he was seemingly brushing-off Phil and more experienced assistants was the nail in his coffin. He was too arrogant to fess up to his own shortcomings and then try and fix them.

I thought it would be a season end firing, but taking everyone at their word, I think Phil fired him when he did with the hope we could revive, make a push for the playoffs and build some momentum as a better destination for players.

I think that he started breaking some sets and going with more PnR. Phil did not like that ... seriously.

oh ... and he touched jeanies azz by mistake but phil ain't taking no chances.
