Everyone loves the excitement of a trade or a FA signing, but seriously how often is it truly transformative for a team -- at least in recent times.

The only ones I can think of at the moment are KG to the celtics (along w Ray Allen), and of course the Lebron to Miami and back to Clevland. Maybe Harden to Houston

So many more seem to go sideways or backwards. This year alone it seems like so many of the summer FA signings have been mild to major disappointments with many teams reportedly looking to get rid of their new toys (or resigned ones), e.g., Monroe, Harris, Lawson, Dragic. Still recent but not this year, Stephenson, Lin, Gasol (?), Love, Shumpert, Howard

While not major disappointments by any means, even when serious talents move the hype and hope seems stronger than the reality, see our own Melo coming here, LaMarcus to SA (though still TBD to be fair)

Am I forgetting some?

Seems like the unfortunate truth is that Phil is right. A team needs to draft and develop players (transformative not transactional) and build a team where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Trades and FA signings are more likely to result in subtle tweaks

How can you draft and develop players when you have no draft picks?

Willy Hernangomez, you're our only hope...

The Knicks added a first and a second rounder last year and it didn't happen in February.

good post. Patience isnt easy. Knick fans got a taste of winning some games and have a shiny new player to build around, so lets get to it. Its entirely possible KP isnt ready to lead this team for another 3-4 years (my god he would be 24!).

Thats fan impatience and who cares.. my only concern is front office patience. How long can the Knicks FO stand to be mediocre before doing something stupid? It may simply take a few years to aquire the needed assets to keep building. There will be setbacks along the way. In the meantime we will have to stomach the "trade Lopez for 2nd round pick" type threads because he's not the one who is helping us beat GS and win titles. Thats fans... hopefully the guys pushing the buttons have a deeper vision. History does NOT instill much faith or hope there

I was reading about Willy and I heard an NBA comparison that made me smile. Tony Battie. Doesnt sound very sexy but he was a fantastic role player for those Boston teams that had good playoffs runs (its wasnt ALL Toine). I actually think Willy is more skilled so cool. I simply hope he can do the things KOQ couldnt

but doesn't that prove the point? We traded those picks for folks like Bargnani and Curry and had such high hopes yet they failed

there are a couple of GMs and teams that seem to be truly talented in fleecing other teams in trades (Celtics had a rich history in this, but that's leveled off a bit in comparison to the 80s and 90s) or in getting FA or trades for big impact (Heat [sadly], Lakers a while back)

SA, GS, OKC, mostly draft and develop. OKC in my opinion has made some really poor trades, for example, e.g., letting Harden go, trading and then paying big for Kanter

Which makes the NTC on Melo even more painful. Could've parlayed him into multiple picks and role players...

And IIRC Battie was a very high draft pick, whereas Willy was a 2d rounder

A bunch of little moves, and a constant push to develop, is the right formula IMO

The team is making progress. It does take time and unfortunately this isn't a patient city. Still things were getting better before the injury bug, plus the issues with Fish had an impact as well. We had to allow time for new players to learn and adapt to the new system and each other. All of that had an impact on the record.

Perhaps now the team an refocus and get back to the good level they were at before the injuries and go on a strong run to close out the season. 27 games is not too long so they can really push hard. Plus Phil will likely add someone like Jimmer to help boost the offense. Rambis sounds like he has some ideas to shake things up! We'll see how they respond. I still like this team's chances of fighting back into this playoff race. They played well and I believe they can do it again.

Impatient knick fans must love those "Buy a car today, and we make the first two payments for you!!!"
The buzz of a new toy wears off and then you realize there are 60 more payments left.

We got one OP lamenting about H20's contract and the NTC Melo has. THen another wants to trade Rolo for Teague and somehow we'd be better.
Solves one problem and another pops up.

What if New coach Rambis can get us on a run to the playoffs? or New coach Rambis gets Grant to respond as we had hoped?
Trade low and buy high is ignorant and yet often recommended.
