Everyone loves the excitement of a trade or a FA signing, but seriously how often is it truly transformative for a team -- at least in recent times.
The only ones I can think of at the moment are KG to the celtics (along w Ray Allen), and of course the Lebron to Miami and back to Clevland. Maybe Harden to Houston
So many more seem to go sideways or backwards. This year alone it seems like so many of the summer FA signings have been mild to major disappointments with many teams reportedly looking to get rid of their new toys (or resigned ones), e.g., Monroe, Harris, Lawson, Dragic. Still recent but not this year, Stephenson, Lin, Gasol (?), Love, Shumpert, Howard
While not major disappointments by any means, even when serious talents move the hype and hope seems stronger than the reality, see our own Melo coming here, LaMarcus to SA (though still TBD to be fair)
Am I forgetting some?
Seems like the unfortunate truth is that Phil is right. A team needs to draft and develop players (transformative not transactional) and build a team where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Trades and FA signings are more likely to result in subtle tweaks
