Magic trade Drew Gooden

By Tim Povtak | Sentinel Staff Writer
Posted July 23, 2004, 1:15 PM EDT

"The Orlando Magic have agreed to trade power forward Drew Gooden, Steven Hunter and the rights to second-round draft pick Anderson Varejao of Brazil to the Cleveland Cavaliers for center/forward Tony Battie.

Hunter, a free agent, had to be signed to a new contract before the deal becomes official later today.

Battie, 6-11, 240, averaged 5.6 points and 4.9 rebounds last season, playing in both Boston and Cleveland.

Gooden averaged 11.6 points and 6.5 rebounds last season, his first full year in Orlando."

Oh God, the Cavs got such a good deal, guess they aren't trading Big Z anymore...

Great trade for the Cavs, nice recovery from the Boozer fiasco. What is orlando thinking?

I have no idea what Orlando is thinking, Battie is a good role player but they gave up too much. Definitely a very good trade for the Cavs, Gooden is a nice replacement for Boozer.

How can Orl be so dumb? The kid from Brazil is a good prospect, and Gooden's talent far exceeds Battie's, who I like but lets face it he's a role player at best.

Exactly, I don't undertand why they included Varejao in that deal. You just don't go around included prospects like that in a deal when you are already giving up more talent than the other side.

Gooden is a bit of a tweener, and Orl needed a C and has Howard at PF now, but still, I have to think they could have done better than Battie. Jeez the Knicks could have got him if his value was this low.

According to NBA sources, the Cavaliers have traded veteran forward Tony Battie and future draft picks to the Orlando Magic for forwards Drew Gooden, Steven Hunter and Anderson Varejao. The trade is expected to become official later today.

The Beacon Journal is reporting this deal. The deal depends on what drafts picks Orlando is getting back, IMO.

Beat me to it, I was just about to post that site.... I still think this is a bad deal for Orlando, however.

That makes it a little more equitable, but unless it's multiple first rounders it still works out in the Cavs favor. Varejo was a projected mid-first rounder who slipped a bit, but he's a good prospect. Cavs look playoff bound now with LeBron, Z, Gooden, and Snow, so those picks not likely to be lottery.

TREMENDOUS deal for the Cavs. They get 3 nice prospects for one very average center. Gooden can score more than Boozer (though not as good on the boards). Hunter is a decent center prospect and Varajao is a nice hustle forward.

Not sure why Orlando did this...They have Cato and Declerq...

With hunter to back up big Z it looks like they wont be needing Diop at all - he's stuck as their third center, maybe now the knicks can get him and wagner, even though they wont need a power forward anymore

You might think of Gooden as a more all-around skilled player, but Boozer is the man. He may not have as many moves, but the ones that he has are very effective. He plays bigger than he is, and he's pretty big to begin with.

Boozer is a guy I think you can count on to average double-doubles for the next decade. Gooden is going to struggle to rebound consistently with his much lighter frame. He might have the potential of a Rasheed Wallace... but he certainly showed a lot less than Boozer did last season.

Unless they piled on the draft picks, the Cavs got a great deal though.

it's called karma.

after paxson and gund made quite possibly the biggest bonehead move by an executive in history, they nicely made two VERY good trades to improve their team. they got a veteran, playoff tested point guard in snow while unloading a useless contract in ollie. and now they get a talented gooden and a good prospect in verajao while giving up a surplus player. good job by paxson.

now all that needs to happen is that boozer becomes a bust or breaks his ankle...

i guess orlando wanted a big man to take some pressure off howard. they now have two seven footers in battie and cato.

Wow I just saw ESPN news and they said only 2 2nd round picks were sent to Orlando. You got to like what the Cavs have done so far to recover from the Boozer situation, they made a nice trade in which they landed Eric Snow and now they just ripped Orlando off for Drew Gooden and a good prospect.

Good job by the Cavs. I am not a big Drew Gooden fan, but he can do some things for them. Will he completely fill Boozers shoes? No clue, but he has the potential. Lets see if they can start next season, where they left off. I love Eric Snow though. He plays so hard every game, does a little bit of everything, and helps his teams win ball games. He's gonna be good for Cleveland.

woah, good move for the cavs. they got the best young athletic available PF fora can of beans. how could they have done better?

you would think orlando could get a first round pick back. they did add quality depth at a position that is hard to fill BUT

to me this puts the Cavs right back into the playoff picture

Cavs are so Jeckel and Hyde. Losing Boozer was terrible. Then turn around and make 2 very good trades. Plus getting Pavlovic and Jackson when they needed shooters.

On other hand they draft langdon, wagner and doip...but also got Boozer in 2nd round. They are always Hit or Miss.
