I've been talking about him for days on other forums, wanted to share my thoughts here. Cut by Memphis at the end of Dec, he resurfaced shortly thereafter in the DL and has been ripping that league apart ever since. Just named player of the week in the DL. Fresh off a 30 point/18 assist game...I really like this kid, always have. Is he perfect? Of course not but when you look at all the needs surrounding this team/what may be holding us back: dire need to upgrade at the point, need for some more scoring punch, some more talent/excitement and another transition player--all while facing limited avenues to improve at this time (I see 10-day contracts and possibly a minor trade with our limited resources) -- I think this kid would be perfect. Look at all the positives: he's shown nothing but improvement along the way (junior yr to senior yr at Louisville, then in NBA Summer League, now in the DL), lightning quick, fast in transition, dynamite handle, breakdown/blow-by ability we're sorely lacking, he's a criminally underrated passer, he's always been a terrific scorer and he's actually quite the ballhawk defensively. Another huge plus--we can go out and get this guy for nothing right now, just need to create some room.

We opted to sign Thanasis with our open spot. A curious move but I'm OK with it because I believe in the player. Probably in the minority here but I'm actually a fan of Thanasis'--just makes adding Russ Smith a little harder now.

The way I see it they need to part ways with Sasha Vujacic. Well aware he's Phil's guy but there needs to come a point when even he has to question whether he's living in the past with him and whether his roster spot could be put to better use. There's no question it could be and should be. I really don't understand why he's still here--he can't help this team and there's no way he's brought back beyond this season. He needs to be bought out or simply waived.

How's this retool on the fly to try and salvage the season:

- We called up Thanasis--find time for him. Let's see what he can do. I think he could have an impact. He needs some work but his athleticism, energy, motor and desire to play defense are all huge pluses. I also don't think he's that far off offensively--he can slash and finish, finish in transition and I don't think his jumper's all that broken.

- Waive Vujacic. Immediately sign Russ Smith.

- Look into a 2 for 1 trade. KOQ/Grant for Darren Collison? Comparable to Jeff Teague imo, makes only $5mm compared to Teague's $8mm next yr. We get the vet PG upgrade we may be looking for and it would give us $3mm more to use in FA as opposed to dealing for Teague (Steve Mills has supposedly had his eye on DC for awhile now). Or a better trade imo--call up Detroit and see what's up with Spencer Dinwiddie. Supposedly told he'll be playing in the DL for the rest of the year. I read he took the news in stride but you know he can't be happy about that. DET acts like they don't know what to do with this kid. 6'6" combo guard with a ton of versatility. I see something very close to Alexey Shved with Dinwiddie. I'd be open to dealing any of our assets to get Dinwiddie--Grant, Seraphin, KOQ, Galloway, Early, any combination of 2.

- If we succeed in pulling off a 2 for 1 trade, sign Elliot Williams to a contract. Very athletic and talented. Imagine the firepower/transition potential we could feature on a 2nd unit that featured some combination of Russ Smith, Thanasis, Elliot Williams, Spencer Dinwiddie and his versatility to go along with Derrick Williams and the much improved Lance Thomas. Wow...

- If he's still around after all this tinkering, find some more time for Kevin Seraphin. I like his post offense and he can protect the rim a little bit. After seeing Seraphin and KOQ up close, I'd rather see more Seraphin when we need an extra big man.

No pie in the sky ideas here. All plausible. Doable..

- i like russ smith, dinwiddie and elliot williams as PNR PGs who can penetrate
- unfortunately or fortunately we run the triangle, thats why non-shooting PGs have trouble fitting in (like grant).
- we have enough forwards, adding one that cant shoot wont help much (btw speaking of SFs that cant shoot, when is early returning)
- i love the idea of playing Seraphin and KOQ more. these are solid backups that can contribute

Overall - give grant more time, adding other young PGs (like himself who cant shoot) wont help his development. I like Collison but i dont think the Kings (trying to make the playoffs) will give up their 2nd best guard. (who often plays next to Rondo). In my opinion, this yr and next yr are simply auditions to see who will fit next to KP when this team will be ready to contend. We brought in young players so we should see how they grow

Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better

I agree that we should bring in some talented fresh blood at the back end of our roster. What about Early's spot? Can he be replaced? And there's no way that we need to carry O'quinn, Seraphin and Amundsen, is there? I'd love to see Calderon and a big traded for an upgrade, say Dinwiddle or Jennings, Collison or obviously Teague and then add 2 additional young guards to replace the big that we traded and also the Early slot. Choose between Fredette, Wroten, Russ Smith, Elliot Williams, even consider Ricky Ledo again whose been playing very well and is only 23. The end result would be a much stronger, younger, faster deeper backcourt and only losing one superfluous big plus Jose. We even get to keep Fisher's pet Sasha.

We're on the same wave length, Reub. I want to see an infusion of talent specifically guards for the backcourt. I'm only interested in realistic possibilities. I've narrowed it down to 3 guards:

Russ Smith - Love him. Hard-nosed, talented two-way player that has the talent and skills to function in any system, from halfcourt triangle ball getting others involved, to taking guys off the dribble/scoring it himself to transition speed ball. Decent jump-shooter from all over too..We don't have anything like him on the roster and haven't had anything like him since maybe Rod Strickland (not counting Shane Larkin who was a bit player that didn't work out here). I think this guy gets a bum rap--this dude's actually a true PG. He's a superb passer in my opinion. And I love his defense--quick hands and good instincts. Go watch video of this kid playing defense, hawking other ball-handlers up the floor. Seth Curry in the DL, Michael Carter Williams in college--these guys couldn't even bring the ball up against Smith--he was taking it right away from them...Definitely an NBA PG--question is just how high his ceiling is. A better version of Ish Smith? Better version of Patrick Beverley? I think so. He's better than Isaiah Canaan.. I'd rather have this guy over Jerian Grant. Local guy too--the Garden would absolutely LOVE him.

Elliot Williams - similar albeit superior player to Tony Wroten imo. Can't settle for Tony Wroten if this dude's available. 6'5" talented, athletic, extremely versatile, finally healthy.

Spencer Dinwiddie - would love to pull off a sensible trade to get him. I think he can be had and unlike a lot of players we all covet, I think we have the pieces to get this dude. Big talented, versatile combo guard--another guy with the skill set to thrive in any system.

Disagree. He's a player. I like him for us because he's available (not available to trade for but available to add right now for nothing! Given our situation, that should be appealing for us), his skills/abilities fit what we should be looking for in a PG upgrade (not looking for another ho-hum "triangle guard." We already have those and we're struggling) and there's a few ways we could add him--waive a superfluous player (Vujacic, Amundson), don't offer Thanasis a 2nd 10-day contract, execute a minor trade for a future asset/a minor 2 for 1 deal etc.. Up until just recently, we had the open roster spot all along..

What's the reason(s) Russ Smith "is not a good player"? Can you explain that to me? We must be looking at two different players...Why is he not in the NBA beyond the obvious reason (teams have full rosters with too many guaranteed contracts)? Which of his skills wouldn't translate over to the NBA? I think we should take the flier here. Beggars can't be choosers. I mean if he didn't work out, cut him. No harm, no foul. It's great to speculate who might be available in the draft if Phil could garner a pick, speculate about the FAs this summer etc., but we need to cross those bridges when we get to them. More interested in what we could do right now with our limited resources/limited avenues to improve to try to salvage the season. Two separate things.. Let's see if we could uncover a potential jewel or two here with guys like Russ Smith, Elliot Williams, a small trade for a Spencer Dinwiddie, etc.. To me, these are legit guard upgrades compared to what we're currently featuring. If it went nowhere, ok--no worse for the wear.
