Expiring contracts are only valuable (for the Knicks at least) if you're going to use them in trades. And if we got Wagner, I'd want to be very patient with him, which means we wouldn't trade him by Feb's trade deadline. In contrast, Othella's expiring contract is one that *should* be used to get the best player we can. At this point, I think Dikembe and Othella's contracts can get someone who not only has upside (like Wagner) but also has played at least fairly well in the NBA already.

obviously, if you can get those types of players, it's the ideal...my plan was to go after a DaJuan Wagner or someone of that ilk if they were unable to land Jamal Crawford.

i agree with that as a backup plan if many other plans don't work out.

Dajuan Wagner probably shouldn't sign a new lease on his apartment in Cleveland.

When asked if Wagner's spot on the roster is safe, Cavaliers general manager Jim Paxson admitted he could be traded.

"No. 23 is safe," Paxson said. "Basically, look at the team in October. We're going to help the team any way we can. If it means making some more moves trade-wise, we'll do that. We need to address our needs up front."

If we are only giving up Kurt Thomas for Wagner & Diop (works out on the trade checker) then we should do it. We can save our expiring contracts for other deals. I'm still inclined to go after Crawford even if we get Wagner, especially if Shandon, Penny, and Moochie are involved in deals and most importantly it's never a bad thing to have too many young players with potential, and it appears Crawford is about to fulfill his.
Hopefully the Knicks would also have enough to land Walker, but trading Kurt could hurt their chances. Whether the center is Diop or Dampier, a guy like Walker would be a perfect compliment because he can spread the floor even more and we'll have a true big man in the middle.

Whats the point in having Wagner and Craw? One of them simply will not play. And Diop is really bad. He just can't play. And KT is not wortless you know. He is a very solid player. Many teams would love to have him. We could wate till the deadline and move him to a team that thinks they need a tough lowpost defender who can rebound, and stick the midragne j. Trading him for 2 busts is just not a good idea.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

Kurt could turn into a player who is being paid to much to be a role player (i.e. Shandon Anderson) and then he'll be tough to move with
3-4 years left on a contract - that's not a good idea.

KT is a bargain by recent standards. And trading him away for a defenite bust in Diop and a guy who at best will be a solid bench player in Wagner just because sometime down the road he might decline drastically is not something I can agree with.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

how do you know for sure that Wagner is at best only a solid bench player? he's only had 2 seasons in the NBA, & has had injuries that limited his playing time in both...his rookie year was actually pretty solid & he showed some very good flashes that year...are you some kind of expert that knows when young players can be considered busts & when they still have potential? please tell me your methods in judging talent.
