I feel like certain people should give Jose a break on the hate. All you hear from the haters is "Jose Stinks" or "Jose's defense is horrible" or "Jose shouldn't be a starter" and i could go on and on but i won't. On the gameday thread last night certain people were killing him in the first half but he ended up having a really good game. We all know that Jose doesn't have great defense and we all know that we need an upgrade at point guard and we all know that he doesn't have the athleticism/speed to get past most other point guards to get to the basket but do we all realize that he's the best we have as of now?? Do we all realize that he does a heck of a job running the offense when he's out there and it's not always about the stats he puts up?? Do we all realize that he's a key guy for what he brings in the locker room and on the bench?? Do we all realize that the other players especially our vets love having him on the floor with them?? So again, we all know he's not the the best point guard out there but he's the best we have and until we get a better one or when/if J.Grant gets to the point where he should be the starter (which won't be this year) he's the best we have and the stat watchers need to stop using a players stats for how good he is or what he brings to the team on and off the court.

Alright Calderon haters you can come at me now with your reasons why Calderon stinks and shouldn't be starting or why J.Grant or Gallo should be starting over him.

Maybe you shouldn't speak for everyone cause there's plenty of Calderon haters on here.

i've been critical of Jose's defense but don't hate him. In fact I think he contributes to the team in a number of important ways.

I would like to see him switched off on D though and either have AA or (even) LT play D on the quicker guards (LT did this earlier in the season; can't remember the game exactly but may have been Blazers)

Also I think the team would benefit if it could find someone like the next Patrick Beverly. Someone who can be spotted in to shut down a hot guard and do the other little things a PG does

I think we stand a much better chance of finding a defensive contributor from the D league (or riding pine some place) than finding Derrick Rose/Westbrook (seems all the cries for point guard help on this forum are for guys who can fill it up)

Calderón has played well enough to get more respect around here. He's doing his job. His job was never to be a defensive stopper or slasher to the basket.

in some key possessions, LT played defense against isiah thomas as well towards the end of that last game

I think perspective should be kept that one feels quite emotional watching games. When fans see our team giving up easy points due to Calderon's poor defense, it makes them upset. Simple really..

What you say about what he brings to the team is absolutely true, but it does not change the fact that
-He is probably the worst starting PG in the league
-His defense is horrible

I'm open-minded. Why are these conclusions statistically resistant?

What about his production obscures the fact he is the worst?

-Really good shooter( very important trait amoung pgs these days)
-Can take care of the ball very well
-Impressive Win Shares

In relation to other point guards.

So then are you arguing those things are less valuable than most statistical measurements given them credit for?

I like Jose a lot. We need a better player. He's a good stop gap. We weren't stocking the roster with all stars. He's part of the culture change while Chandler has 3 years $40mm left on his deal while his #s and play are terrible. We did OK. This is a short term thing anywho

Why is Chandler's new deal a factor? His old deal was the one that came off the books. You are right he is a stop gap though so it is what it is.

It was R.Fatton's contract that we all wanted to get rid of which i think had like 3 maybe 4 years left so that was a plus.

First and foremost you would get more defense by putting a traffic cone under the basket. Second, for a veteran player he plays like a coward. He visibly panics when double teamed and when this happens he always puts people in a bad spot to shoot. He can't shoot. He should never be taking any important shots yet time after time you see it and he misses. He'll make a 3 every now and then in spot in the game but never in crunch time. He is just the epitomy of a mediocre player and I think he does not belong on this team if we are to take winning seriously. And again its not that he is a bad person but I still want them to grab him and kick him in his behind right out into the cold street on 8th avenue after the Knicks next home game. I don't even want him to get his clothes or head to the showers. Just throw him out in his uniform. We'll mail him his stuff the next day. I don't want to see him again.

So a 17 win team should just get rid of all the players who aren't great and replace them with better ones?

Why didn't Phil Jackson thing of that?

Same here. I don't hate Calderon, but I don't see him as a starting PG. he does lead a lot of the young dudes, and that is valuable. He is a horrible defender, but I don't mind him getting minutes if he makes up his mind to shoot the ball. At this point, that is all he is good for. Shoot the ball or take a sit.

Thank God Fisher is no longer our coach, now let's get Calderon out of here:)

But the point i was trying to get at was that as of now he's our best option to be starting for us and until we can get a better player in here to play the point he should be starting for us. Wouldn't you agree with that??
