The hook is Lopez's deadliest offensive weapon

NBA.com has him taking 88* hooks in the Knicks' 37 games, hitting 48 of them (54.5 percent), which is a nice number. Only 44 percent of those makes are assisted, which means if Lopez has position, he can generate one of those buckets with his one-on-one moves.

*(This number will not square with some later numbers because NBA.com's video coding can be a bit messy and some things get counted or labeled wrong.)

Lopez's hooking has gotten crazy good over the last few weeks

I counted 16 made hooks on 37 attempts through the end of November (18 games). I counted 30 makes on 47 attempts in the 19 games since, which is pretty nuts.

Lopez might secretly be lefty

People have been talking about Lopez's lefty hook since he was in college, and the Knicks are slowly coaxing that weapon out of him. Lopez was 5-9 on lefty hooks in 18 games through November and is 11-14 on lefty hooks in the 19 games since. Eleven of fourteen!!!

(Righty hooks: 11/28 in the first eighteen games, 19/33 since.)

can't believe they were able to see that he could be a good post player. That was never his game. Kudos to phil on that one.

Yeah, his post play has been incredible. I never would have guessed his hook shot was that accurate, but dang - that's amazing. I never thought he could be an offensive weapon in the post, but he's been very good.

I do feel like in the past few games - the three great wins - Rolo has been setting up slightly deeper in the post. He's been in the high post more and it has helped his efficiency because he can pass OR shoot from down there. When he gets the ball in the high post he tends to turn it over more, I think because defenses know he doesn't want to shoot and he's just going to pass. But Fisher has made a lot of good little tweaks to what they're doing lately and it has paid off.

Have been stunned and more than pleasantly surprised by his hook shooting and the ambidexterity he has.

Have to say that during recent games I've come to expect him to hit the shot whenever he takes it.

Coaching staff has seemingly talked to him about using it more.

I remember reporters mentioning Fisher's comments on how they were working to find a way to get Lopez involved in the offense more. Seems like the basic but generally underused hook shot was the answer to the problem.

The support staff is the same one's that worked with the Laker bigs. They made guys like Chris Mihm, Ronny Turiaf look solid. They made Bynum and Pau look like monsters in the post (although Pau was already a monster in there anyway). A month or so ago RLo was off balance and looked awkward in the post. Now he looks far better. It's being comfortable in the offense and I think also the coaching staff encouraging him to be aggressive in the post but remain balance. If RLO can give this team 10 points a night, we're in business because he defends and hustles magnificently.

RoLo getting deep post position is a HUGE correction and a very important part of the Triple Post Offense. That deeper post opens up other options. Tex has alignments for Deep post, Mid post and High Post, which would make sense in an offense called the Triple Post Offense. With this roster RoLo getting deeper more often can be a very good thing cuz it stretches the spacing even more plus makes his shots closer and more likely to go in.

The Mid post is useful to allow back cuts and more motion etc. There's a lot of stuff that RoLo has had to learn and absorb and he's starting to really get comfortable with it all.

agree with this big time. He has definitely been getting the ball a lot deeper. Not only is he closer (i.e., doesn't need to back down) it seems to have simplified his decision making and makes his more decisive and effective. Nice development for sure.

yup. and now with his improving post game he should start getting to the line more.

Love this guy and everything he is about. He has been one of my favs for a few years. People don't realize how much better he makes a team. Portland may miss Aldridge but I think that maybe Rolo even more because of the intangibles and leadership.
