This team has two above average players and a bunch of marginal talent.

Outside of Melo and KP every other player on this team is below average. Lopez, having a good year, would start for a lot of teams - but he is not having a good year. Calderon and AA are not good enough to be starters and neither are any of the guys playing behind them.

During the preseason we all like to project that all our young players will grow, and our old players will revert back to the players they were years ago.

KP has been much better that we had a right to expect. Everyone else has probably been about what a non-biased fan would expect.

Has Fish been a great coach? No, but it's mostly just lack of talent.

I'm still hoping that some of the young guys grow and the old guys discover the fountain of youth - but I'm not blaming fish if they don't.

I don't know Melo has been very average of late. Not hating just saying.

I agree Melo has not been playing as well as he has in the past. Given his age and injuries I think that was predictable. I still believe he is an above average player and I expect (hope) he will round into better form by the end of the year.

melo has been a borderline top 15 player for many years. He ain't that young anymore and if he plays the same style he will just fade away. He is now not anywhere near the top 15 but if he modifies his game and becomes more of a player that facilitates for others and takes 10-15 a game within the flow, he can still be quite valuable.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

That's not his game and we really shouldn't expect an old dog to change his game. The game is passing him by now he came into the league at 19 and is 31 now he has a lot of mileage on his legs. LeBron has slowed down and its noticeable.

True assessment but basketball is a team sport. We may only have 2 very good players, and the rest average, but many of the average players compliment the 2 very good players. It's far better than teams who have say 4 good players yet they don't compliment each other. Look at some of the other teams below us in the standings and they have even more talent. This wasn't Phil Jackson's first choice or 2nd choice talent. This was his most realistic group of players. There's FA money in 2016 and Knicks have to add at least 1 more major player, to contend in for a top 5 spot in the East. And they've got to hope Porzingis keeps getting better and better.

I agree. This is a process and this season is providing important information on what we need to add around KP for the future. We got the most important thing, which is a player that you can make your focal point to build around. At least that's how I see KP.

The jury is still out on Jerian as the future PG. We have to remember that we're probably not even close to seeing the best he has to offer yet. Same with Gallo in that he's still learning and growing. As usual we need patience.

I'm not unhappy with the team. They are much more interesting than they have been in a while.

I posted because, in my opinion, fans are too hard on the team and the coach.

Thanks for talking these guys off the ledge Nix. No patience, whatsoever. With 7 new guys, they're looking for championship pedigree. It's gonna take more time fellas. We are still feeling our way. Remember how long it took JR to recover from his knee surgery? Melo has even more mileage on his legs. Let's see what happens during this next quarter before we start jumping the gun.

Always easy to give him a pass. Lots of players modify their games when they get older, Melo isn't anything special

In all honesty, we have 1 above average rookie, 1 rapidly diminishing old barely above average former all star, and several roster filler type role players. SO really 1 and a half above average players.

I don't mind! IT's all a part of the plan and process. You don't get the kitchen island you want and wood floors until you gut the foundation and restructure a few beams. Year 1 of the renovation. It's better than the D League 17 win team we had last year!

This was a good thread. I genneraly agree with your take though think AA could start for a few teams. Despite the avergeness of this team, it can still win its fair share when Melo is healthy and playing up to his capabilities. KP makes this team a must watch despite its 'inconsistent play
