I'm fine with this season the way it's going. We're truly in a transitional season, as the reins are slowly being passed from Melo as the face of the team and primary option to KP. By the start of next season, KP will be leader and star of this franchise, and we'll be a legit playoff contender. Hopefully by year 3 and 4, we'll be truly competitive for a chip, as Lebron's prime winds down, Melo is finally off the books, and we've added the right complementary pieces around KP.
That's a long road.
I like the idea of taking a step back if a team Melo would want to go to can provide assets that get us there. At the same time a starphuch free agent signing like Durant would make this team very interesting if we can get some back court improvement either by Gallo/Grant step up or some low profile trade.
All the while Fish becomes the coach we think he can grow into and maybe Dwilliams can channel his inner Kwai Leonard/Gerald Wallace and be a good glue guy for us.
After that we can best hope for a year by year improvement and that Phil sets this franchise up right for a long term even after he is gone. That's ok too.
I'm ok with either approach. Durant, even if he's not scoring champion Durant, is a efficient scorer and a willing playmaker for others. Melo, 8 assist but terrible game otherwise, is not a natural playmaker for others. He has to be constantly reminded by the coaching staff and his fellow teammates to dish the rock. For instance, on that Melo Tech, Porzingis was wide open with both arms in the sky ready for the ball to be delivered, but Melo still decided to chuck it up against Matthews grabby defense. KP was on phucking fire in the 4th. Melo only made 1 bucket I think in the 2nd half for 6-18 shooting overall.
Landing Durant (though a long shot), would be a great addition, even if he's not 100%.
Or we can continue to add or change role players around KP...get like a Batum or like a Conley. I'm all for high IQ team oriented 2 way players. NO more ISO Hero Ball players please!
