Former New York Knicks guard J.R. Smith has been accused of choking a 19-year-old high school student in Chelsea after the younger man quipped about the hoopster's trade to Cleveland.

Smith, 30, has not been arrested in connection to the alleged incident outside Artichoke Basille's Pizza about 4 a.m. on Nov. 13 at W. 17th St. and Tenth Ave., which shares a block with ultra-trendy celebrity hangout 1OAK.

It's not clear if Smith, a New Jersey native who was in town to play his former team the same day, was coming from the club.

The teen, Justin Brown, who wears braces and hails from Harlem, was with pals who chided Smith for ignoring their fan request for a photo.

Smith is seen on a cell phone video walking away from the group, sources said.

The video said the kid asked for a picture with JR. Apparently JR wouldn't take a picture with the kid and the kid then started heckling him and talking about why the Knicks traded him.

Smith is seen on a cell phone video walking away from the group, sources said.
"That's why New York kicked you out, yo!" Brown remarked.
Brown told cops that after the verbal brush, Smith, who is 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, checked him against the exterior of the building and put his hands around Brown's neck, police sources said.

Exactly, I don't think the kid was some angel either and learned a valuable lesson about how words have consequences when you're a male.

so the kid simply wanted a photo and an autograph with jr smith without really liking him. what do you call that-- you know when you want a photo op to put on twitter or facebook with a famous person you neither know nor like, and do they same thing with an autograph? there's got to be a term for 21st century douchebags like that.

the kid sounds like a just another new york city stupid azzhole. it's difficult for me to feel sympathy for jr smith here but i kind of do.

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

He was with his buddies. I think the article or video said it was 1:00 am, that is what 19 years old do. JR either needs to have someone with him to handle that or leave it a lone. Not condoning what the 19 year old did but JR has to encounter that a lot.

As a former teacher if one of us acted improperly in an emotional situation with a kid we would always hear that cliche- "he's a kid...you're an adult."

Was a discipline dean and had my share of physical and verbal run-ins with kids. Not going to lie and say I did not want to do what Smith did, but you have to control yourself.

Both were wrong, but Smith has to think first, since everything a celebrity type person does is going to be recorded these days. Walk away, maybe get some verbal shots in, but don't get physical unless you are actually attacked.

Might also have to ask why Smith was out at 4AM when he had a game later in the day, but I suppose we all know the answer.

Walt, I am a teacher right now and a TCI Trainer. One of the mantras is when you are at your angriest you are at your stupidest. Also went to a training where the theme was to be a second to last word person. Makes a lot of sense when you consider the conflict cycle. In TCI you teach someone to ask themselves 4 questions before they intervene in a crisis and the one JR messed up on is,'how am i feeling now.'

Never had that training in NYC. Was in a Western Queens school with some issues and a reputation for being a dangerous place in the last 5 years I was there. Made it out alive without going to the rubber room for verbal or physical issues.

The angriest/stupidest comment seems legit given what I experienced. Easier said than done. My own personal rule was that if I actually got into a heavy verbal altercation where I should have known better, I would not press the issue in terms of official discipline, at least in most cases. Had enough of a rep as a fair guy so things usually worked out, but man, was I tempted at times.

Ever think that JR actually asked himself "How amd I feeling Now," and then answered himself with, "Fine, now I'm going to F up this punk?"

I have been at games where girls were yelling to JR during warm ups that they wanted to sleep with him. My guess is that he was pushed a bit beyond asking himself the 4 questions. Also, as you know, you can't go there anymore. You used to be able to ask kids if they could leave on their own or if they needed help.

Happy to have taken the early retirement and be out of the system, and happy that we gave Smith an early retirement from the Knicks.

The 4 AM time, if correct, was also the time when Copeland and Thefalosia(sp) had their incidents, I think.

Have to be honest, if you are a professional athlete with a game later in the day, I simply cannot believe that you are out that early in the morning at a night club, and if trouble ensues, I'm less likely to be as sympathetic as I might be if there had been an incident at an Art Museum at noon when you play at 7PM that night.

Agree about early retirement. I always wanted to go until at least 62 because I loved my job. Jumping through hoops now every day not just at the end of a marking period. I have talked to my wife about retiring at 55 but that is a huge loss financially. Hope you are enjoying your well earned retirement.

Its 4am. Leave the club and get in the car and go home. JR is a magnet for "stuff".

few weeks ago he said he felt betrayed by Phil revealing one of his "distractions" was he was having trouble with his "gal".
This was one of the reasons he was not performing. While I can't condone Phil on this, professional players have distractions all the time and JR is now in his 30's with lots of history of "distractions". If Phil crossed the line its only because JR moved it there for some defense of why he was expelled from a 5-34 team.

Did phil cross that line?

I think JR is just making noise. JR took us all into the sanctaty of his bedroom himself a long time ago.

As for choking the kid, JR is the adult and should be used to this kind of stuff. A public figure you learn to deal with it. Jr don't learn.

After long list of ignorance and being underpaid JR took it to a new level. He opted out of a 6.5$mil guarantee one year left on his knick deal to test free agency. Cav's told him to wait until next year. He ended up signing this:

The deal is worth $10.3 million over two years, however the first year guarantee is just $2 million, according to Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com. He added the second year player option has a $2.1 million guarantee. Haynes also reported the deal included a no-trade clause.

Is he a bad person? No. He's the dimwitted nice kid we all rooted for.
