It's easier to build to fast pace team with guards and forwards, than to build an old school team like the 90's team. Big men do not play like big men anymore. The Warriors proved that you can win playing small ball. First everybody thought MDA system was just for the regular season. It's a copy cat league and we live in a copy cat world. So I'm not surprised.
I believe KP will again lead another change in what you define as small ball. My guess is now teams will look for a bargnani type with defense (from overseas) to play center in their small ball system. Phil seems like the only GM not subjecting to small ball, but rather have the half court twin tower lineup.
It's going to be an on going battle I'm sure. And the old school GM's will either have to change, or stand firm. KP is the hybrid type that can play both small or big. But the system of shooting early in the shot clock is the real change, regardless of small or big lineups. Even Fisher said, score as soon as you have the opportunity. Otherwise, run the triangle.
Also, the new hand check rules makes it almost impossible to lock down a fast guard. So the speed will continue to increase more and more, until the rules change again. If you have a crossover, first step and a jumper (like most small guards), you will have the green light in most systems.
