Jimmer Fredette has signed with the New Orleans Pelicans under the league’s hardship clause, according to reporter Shams Charania (Nov. 9).

Fredette was the second-overall pick, by the Westchester Knicks, in the D-League draft.

A hardship exception allows an NBA team to add a 16th player to their roster. The league must approve all exceptions.

Before signing with the Pelicans, Fredette said he hoped to become the 15th player on the Knicks roster after joining their D-League team.

“With them having 14 guys on the roster, you never know what’s going to happen,” Fredette, drafted Saturday by the Westchester Knicks D-League outfit, said Monday on a conference call. “But everything comes into play when you’re trying to figure out the best situation to go to. I’m excited to be here. I’m not too far from where I grew up so that’s a big part of it and I think that’s sort of a cool thing. You never know what’s going to happen but I hope to impress and play well and then go from there.”

what kind of stupid rule is a HARDSHIP Exception, we could have surely used that last yr. What was the purpose of drafting a player you can't keep..confusing

D-League teams don't have holds on ANY player in the draft.

I believe (though not sure) you can apply for a hardship exemption when you don't have enough healthy players to function.

The thing is, its a temporary exception. When players get healthy they'll have to go back to 15 and some expect Fredette to return to Westchester if he's cut at that time.

The way you worded it, I thought Jimmer was confused, not you.

I think Philly just signed someone under the same rule.

that just shows you how bad this guy really is when you can't make a roster that's 1-11

I'll actually be annoyed if he cuts into Trice's minutes and responsibilities.

Seem to recall that he was just a temporary replacement for an injured player...could be wrong, though.

He was but I don't think the injured player is coming back. I read somewhere that they might sign another player for that spot.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh...not that good for him, then.

Quite a fall for him, given where he was picked in the draft.

I wasn't totally accurate. This is what I saw.
The Pelicans are still injury-riddled, but after signing Jimmer Fredette with a hardship exemption, this might mean someone is returning.

Pelicans release:

The New Orleans Pelicans announced today that the team has waived guard Jimmer Fredette.

It’s also possible New Orleans just wants to try a different player with its 16th roster spot, though the possibilities are not mutually exclusive. One returning player would probably still allow the Pelicans to claim a hardship.

Fredette played just 13 minutes in four games and didn’t do much of note. If he returns to the D-League, the Westchester Knicks still hold his rights.

Was on a D=League roster and was signed as a 16th man.

Did you expect the Pelicans to start him?

Jeremy Linn took two seasons to stick with a team before he even got a chance.
He was not given a proper chance until he got with the knicks and it was a narrow window.

Jimmer is not a good NBA player and on the cusp. I don't see a place for him at the moment on the knicks but the kid can shoot.
If someone makes us an offer on Jose mid season we can't refuse and we promote Gallo/Grant to starting lineup someone could get called up.

The feeling is mutual. Trice is such a smart and hard working player who I really want to see make it. I think he will benefit from a year or two in the D League.

NOVAK can shoot which is why he's still on a NBA roster, jimmer has zero confidence and still wondering why. He has the "Adam Morrison" syndrome

Surprised that he seems to be totally unable to carve out a role for himself on an NBA team.

A lot of hype when in college, but even if he was overrated, and probably not worthy of a lottery pick, you still figured he could be a rotation player on one team or another.

This is why the draft can be such a crap shoot at times. I wanted no part of him because of his D, but thought he could be an instant offense type of guy coming off the bench for about 15+MPG.

Go figure.

PG is one of the hardest positions to evaluate. You have some guys like Gilbert Arenas, who was very explosive in college, but questions about his ability to be a lead guard caused him to fall. You have guys like Acie Law who were subpar athletically, but we're overrated due to their in ability to lead in college. For every guy like Mark Price who can make the adjustment you have guys like Billy McCaffrey who flame out. It has a lot to do with attitude and mental toughness a lot of the time. Nate Robinson is a helluva lot more talented than Jimmer and you see the trouble he's had sticking with a team the past few years.
Always... always remember: Less is less. More is more. More is better and twice as much is good too. Not enough is bad, and too much is never enough except when it's just about right. - The Tick
