And one thing that separates Calderon from Grant is that he has a better jump shot. Unselfish guards has not helped the Knicks in recent years, at all. Pablo was pretty good at it, but he was too unselfish. There's a pretty good chance we might have won more games if he would've been a little more aggressive with his own shot, especially when JR was throwing up bricks a plenty. We won a lot of games when Kidd's shot was consistent, then started losing when he started throwing up bricks.
Yes, we need Calderon to get the big guys involved. And I'm sure he'll do that. But more than anything else we need him to knock down shots.
Grant is better than Pablo was (when we got him) at driving and dishing. Pablo was great at keeping the ball moving, mostly around the perimeter, but he couldnt consistently set up teammates the way Grant has already shown he is able. Grant can also take it to the rim, something Pablo was allergic to, so I dont believe the comparison is accurate. Grant is also a better defender, and I dont see him passing up shots the way that Pablo did to a fault.
Kidd not only stopped hitting his shots but he also ran out of gas, and couldnt keep up defensively. I dont see Grant being a liabilty on defense. His shot looked a little better in his last game, and I expect him to keep it up.
Right, Grant IS more willing to take shots than Pablo was, but Calderon's jump shot is still much better than Grant's. THAT was my point, and that was why I was comparing Calderon to Pablo, not Grant to Pablo. I guess I wasn't clear enough about that.
As I said in the last gamethread, when Calderon is hitting his shots the Knicks can be competitive, but once his shots stop falling, the weaknesses in his game become more glaring, and the offense stagnates.
I dont mind Calderon beginning the season as starter, but by January, if Grant looks like he is ready to start then I hope he does. We learned with Kidd that you want to monitor the minutes of your veteran PGs if you want them to have something left for the playoffs. If Calderon can do a decent job of feeding our big men in the paint, which will open up space for the shooters, I will be very happy.
