With that grind serving as the backdrop, coach Derek Fisher said Monday - two days before the opener in Milwaukee -- that there have been "internal discussions" about keeping Carmelo Anthony at a specific season-long minutes per game to preserve the 31-year-old.

Anthony, who is coming off February surgery, said he'll abide by the restrictions that are recommended.

"I'm not going to fight it. But I know my body better than anybody else," he said. "So I have to be smart about it. If it's a time where I have to take a game off, I'll take a game off. Hopefully it doesn't have to come to that."

I would work him less at the start of the season, and increase his minutes as the season progresses.

You have to trust that he is going to be honest about how his leg feels, and if there is any indication by him that he's being limited by the leg that was operated on after 15-20 games, they should have it looked at immediately. I would even do this before bumping up his playing time, if they end up deciding to do that at some point in the season.

Makes perfect sense..
He know himself that as time goes on he will have more chances of winning in NY.
Unless he will run himself into the ground adding a couple more wins this season.

Worked for Tim Duncan for many years. Id rather haev a healthy Melo for 26-30 minutes for 75 games then 38-44 for 38 games

Hopefully Williams and Early make the decisions easy to make. Could work wonders if Early is able to get more development as well as being able to preserve Melo.

I really hope some of these guys rise to the challenge and embrace the pressure of having to provide a lot of offense while his minutes are down. DWill seems like a likely candidate, obviously, based on how aggressive he's been. I could also see Early licking his chops at the opportunity. I wonder who starts at the SF for those games when they tell Melo to take the night off.

He is going to be MUCH more capable if he limits his minutes. Also, should we decide to go down the trade route in the future, it will just help keep him healthy.
This year is going to be about getting the young guys up to speed, so no sense in running him into the ground. We are not winning a championship this year.

minutes restrictions will mean fewer wins, further cementing the goals fisher outlined during the celtics broadcast.
knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

Great Idea. He is the cornerstone of the team. 32-35 would be fine. They have offense with other players now and they can defend better. Thus they can go 3-4 minutes per quarter without him. Also he will have more energy at the end of games.

Hopefully this works. This could spell huge opportunities for a lot of people, if it does.
