Back in the 90s Charles Oakley was my favorite player for his toughness, defense, rebounding and overall play. Not exceptionally talented but a grinder, a winner and a team guy.

I can't help but think of him when I watch Kyle O'Quinn in action during this preseason. O'Quinn brings the same nose for the ball and quality defense and rebounding. I love how he is constantly barking out on the court and imposing his presence on the gameplay, constantly competing for the ball. What's more, O'Q appears to be more skilled in a variety of ways, as a shooter, a passer and a shot-blocker. Plus he's only 25.

Makes me happy to watch a guy like that on the Knicks as we head into this season.

Watching KO commit hard fouls like Oakman almost brought a tear to my eye..And they have similair verticles..Can we petition to get him to change his number to 34?

I notice he's oakley like play from day one, and if d will can play a little more under control, he can be melo's side kick (pippen to jordan)like.

I like DWill off the bench as Melo's almost identical replacement, especially on O. They have the same game

As the guys of Hardwood Knocks pointed out via Twitter, he’s one of just two players (who played a minimum of 2,500 minutes from 2012-13 forward) to average at least 18.5 points, 15 rebounds, three assists and three blocks per 100 possessions. The other guy is Tim Duncan.

Yeah, I don't see DWill and Melo looking that good playing together in long stretches. They're too similar. I think watching Melo in this offense will be very good for DWill though. And he'll allow us to not overplay Melo too much.

That's a crazy stat. I wonder if in a few years the starting front court might be O'Quinn and Porzingis at the 4 and 5? They'd complement each other really nicely.

Yes, this seems like the most logical fit for DWill and his role on this squad. Another guy who can light it up in a variety of ways and who can keep others teams' 2nd unit on their heels defensively and open up the court for his teammates.

You can almost bet on that as the future starting 4,5. As much I like Rolo I see him being traded eventually.

And it brought a tear to my eye seeing o Quinn doing his best oak man expression last night. It's nice to finally have a hard nosed blue collar player we've been missing since Oakley. Oakley must be proud

I said the same thing to my son. O'Quinn reminds me of Oak. He can hit the open jumper, does the dirty work and just outworks guys.

Great to see in NY again.

O'Quinn, Williams (if legit), Lopez, are the kind of bruisers we haven't been able to take into a possible playoff run in eons. We've had lots of finesse players come through here, some finesse offenses, but its been a while since we've had the style of play these guys hopefully will be able to deliver. No, its not the 90s, but physical play still has its place in the league, especially in the playoffs.
