LAS VEGAS - If the Knicks had any hope of signing LaMarcus Aldridge as a free agent – and he said they did after a recruitment from Carmelo Anthony – it was erased by their commitment to Kristaps Porzingis. Aldridge, among 34 players at Team USA camp at UNLV this week, detailed Tuesday to the Daily News why he canceled his sitdown with Phil Jackson this summer even though he said: “I was excited to meet with them.”
By ‘their guy,’ Aldridge was referring to fourth overall pick Porzingis, the 7-foot-3, 19-year-old Latvian slotted for time at power forward. Aldridge, who has played power forward for most of his career, would eat up the minutes at that position and perhaps hinder Porzingis’ development.
“Melo and I talked a little bit over text and we have mutual friends that passed messages along. I was interested,” Aldridge said. “I talked to other guys to see if they were interested in going there too. I was interested but when they say they want me to play a position that I don’t want to play, I get it.” The Knicks failed to land any of the top names in free agency, using their cap space on Robin Lopez, Derrick Williams, Arron Afflalo and Kyle O’Quinn. Anthony gave the moves a thumbs up on Tuesday after hints from Clyde Frazier and friend/former teammate Kenyon Martin that the Knicks star is unhappy with the direction of the organization. “Honestly, I thought we did a great job as far as putting the pieces we needed to put together," Anthony said at the UNLV practice facility. “We didn’t get DeAndre Jordan, LaMarcus, (Greg) Monroe, but Lopez is a great addition. Afflalo I played with a long time (in Denver). (Kyle) O’Quinn is a great pickup, guys will like him as a big. Derrick Williams, we’ll get him right. He seemed focused. And then our rookies — I had (Porzingis) last week with me working out at my gym. We’re trying to start this thing off right.” |
