Ty … there were times when he was better than others. But the problems have been there for several years, going back to when we were having a lot of on-court success. I don’t want to go back too far. There were just a lot of times where you were at practice and you just know. You could smell it. You know there is probably deeper issues than he would probably let on.”

Kroenke added that Lawson “always had an affinity for burning the candle at both ends,” implying that his partying ways have been common knowledge around the Nuggets’ whole staff for as long as “always” means to Kroenke. So, if they knew Lawson had a problem, the question is, what changed? Was the only difference between this past season and years before that Lawson had been arrested and the Nuggets needed to rebuild?

Kroenke told Spears that Lawson was done with the team once he came back from a Las Vegas vacation during the 2015 All-Star Break too late to attend the Nuggets’ first post-break practice. Not only that, but he had a feeling that they weren’t going to get very much for him because of his struggles.

“I love Ty and will always love Ty, but once I saw him going down this dark path, we knew that we probably were going to end up in a situation where we were dumping him,” Kroenke said. “It creates a weird dynamic.”

The article finishes with Kroenke reiterating his desire to see Lawson overcome his problems in Houston, but it’s still a sobering (if you will) reminder of how even the best athletes in the world can have their lives and career dramatically affected by their personal demons.

Maybe, but Lawson needs to hear these things. It's not just his career that's on the line. What if he killed someone when he was drunk driving? What if he died in accident? I don't want to see the giy hit rock bottom before he figures it out, but that's usually what it takes.

Im kind of on the fence. This week we learned that JR was "Delinquent" which was no suprise but in more detail we get a better sense of why he needed to go. Even Shump was better explained. The team did come together more without them. It was a proccess. Some fans ranted that we got little in return but its not like in the NBA these were secrets. We have MDA on record a few years ago that Shump needed to focus more on basketball. Maybe it was woodson.

I suppose it seems like Nuggs bailed on Lawson after his second DUI and they needed to tell fans this was a problem for a while and as an organization they could not help him. With the trade and his problems broadasted I suppose Nuggs had to chime in. Its not like the Rockets don't know what they are getting or his problems.

At first I thought Kroenke seemed to be divulging more than he need to but when John Lucas is mentioned, you know there are problems!!!

"The Carolina way".........Lots of problems in chapel hill but favorite son Felton has shown his darker side and his replacement Ty Lawson likes to Party! Talented guys but the head gotta be right too!!

No, in many ways I think covering up for ty Lawson all these years in many ways colluded with his alcoholism, it's probably better to acknowledge the issue much earlier rather than pretend it's not happening.

I believe Kronke could have spoken about Lawson's problem without the details, thought that was crass.
