Fuck the Sixers, their GM took the risk and keeps doing so. Still wondering when they become a team instead of a fantasy squad

Hey if they not pick up his 3rd year option (which they would have do do sometime between now and training camp/start of season)
He could be a low risk/high reward type player on a cap friendly deal, possibly vet min
Not sure if Hinkie would be forced to let him go as his 3rd year salary is quite high if they pick him up, and will still have to hope he is able to play and develop him as well

With the addition of OK4 and Noel, think they are better of letting him go and use their cap space next year to get as many talents as they can
They are one of the rare teams that has the cap space to sign 3 MAX players + talents, depending on who they target, with many young players like Covington/Jakarr Sampson/Grant/ Fuldimiar, Isiah Cannon, and Tony Wroten will be a RFA, along with bringing in Dario Saric and other Euro Stashes, 2nd round players, and ALL OF THEIR draft picks next year, and possible trades as well with so many draft picks
Will Tony Wroten recover to his speed/quickness/athleticism and has good size/strength?

The cap space they have, with those young players, they can improve their roster to contenders quickly, with many draft picks that could be used in trades

Hinkie probably will pick up his option for 1 more season, with a salary of about 5m
However, unless he is able to play next year and will have to decide if he is worth keeping after that or to just move on and use the cap space, possibly selling him for 2 2nd rounders in a trade

$4,626,960 this years salary
$4,826,160 next years salary if they pick it up (while it would be his 3rd year, it would be his 1st season if he can play)

$6,100,266 4th year of contract before he will be RFA and eligible for an extension if he is able to play, while Curry had injury issues his first couple of years and turn it around, though Curry actually played and Embid was unable to play at all

$8,003,549 (RFA and this is his Qualifing OFfer) though he could be the next Greg Oden/Thabeet being more likely at this point

I'm still waiting to see Hinkie actually show he can build a team. Sure he's doing a great job of grabbing assets and picks and he's winning the Potential Title, but he's still got to show he can put together a winning Team together. It'll be interesting to see what the Sixers actually do this year. Hinkie has collected some nice young talent. We have to see if it will end up being winning talent.

I really admire this kid's intelligence and have concern for his happiness, which some posters have told me is the only thing that matters for a player, even if it conflicts with their responsibilities as professional athletes.

So does this surgery mean he won't be able to do the thing he loves most for an extended period of time?

From a 6/19/14 pre-draft article on Embiid's injury. Hard for Hinkie to justify drafting as high as he did. Even harder for Embiid to justify riding around on that stupid device.

Breaking Down Joel Embiid’s Navicular Fracture

With the 2014 NBA Draft just a week away, who will go number one overall remains unclear. Injury concerns about his back had already hurt Joel Embiid’s chances but those odds took another significant hit when it was revealed he will need surgery to repair a fracture in his right foot.

Specifically, Embiid suffered a stress fracture in his right navicular bone. The navicular is one of the tiny tarsal bones located in the mid-foot and is essential in proper weight transfer and force absorption generated during ground impact. It also serves as an attachment site for a muscle and a stabilizing ligament of the foot. Unlike some of the bones located in the area, the ends of the navicular have a relatively healthy supply of blood. An ample amount of blood creates an environment more conducive to healing. Generally this means that a small fracture can be treated conservatively or non-surgically. However if the extent of the fracture extends into the body or middle one-third of the bone, surgery is considered the best course of action. This appears to be the case for Embiid.

In the short-term this is a considerable set back for Embiid. Navicular fractures have been costly in the NBA where the averaged missed time sits at 59 games, suggesting his recovery will carry over into the upcoming season. The list of injured players to suffer navicular fractures includes Michael Jordan, Yao Ming, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and Brendan Haywood, who missed all of the 2013-14 season with the injury. Ming’s career was abruptly ended due to his reoccurring foot problems but Yao was taller and 60 pounds heavier than Embiid. Ilgauskas may be a better comparison but that isn’t necessarily reassuring.

From 1998 to 2001, Ilgauskas missed 202 games and underwent three surgeries on his fractured navicular. The final surgery included a bone graft and a reshaping of his calcaneus and first metatarsal to alleviate the stress placed on the area. Only then was the Big Z able to continue what would become a 15-year career.

The long-term effects are less clear. Refractures can occur if the athlete rushes back and some studies show that pain can linger in the foot for as long as two years following surgery. On the plus side, non-unions and hardware failure in navicular repairs are both relatively low.

Embiid will have his foot immobilized and will likely not be allowed to put weight on his foot for at least six weeks. Recovery will then gradually progress over the next few months but insuring the bone is completely healed will remain the focus. Any team willing to draft Embbid should also identify any potential biomechanical issues contributing to the problem to avoid reinjury. Furthermore additional research should be done to determine if there is a reason for Embiid’s propensity to stress fractures.

Embiid could very well go on to have a productive career in the NBA but his multiple red flags make him a risky pick at the top of the board. His latest setback could easily cost him games during the 2014-15 and, after watching Nerlens Noel sit for an entire season, the precedent for conservatively handling rookies has been established. Just what team will be forced to make that decison is anybody’s guess.

Sam Hinkie wouldn't be the first NBA GM to take a young lottery grade center because he felt he was the best current value on the board and said player's career was tragically derailed by injury.

Where I think Hinkie has done well is put the 76ers in a position with their asset base, where they can afford to make "a miss" or two and still have the resources to keep picking top shelf prospects, maintain cap flexibility and jump into any trade they want.

For a team like the Knicks, who only had 1 first rounder in a three year span, an injury situation like this to Zinger would be catastrophic. For Philly at this point, who can still see how the Okafor, Noel and Saric situation work out, I mean they could still have one of the best young frontlines in the league even without Embiid.

IMHO, one of the reasons why guys like Bill Belichick and Billy Beane succeed ( and I'm not counting Hinkie at that level) is exactly that their resource management style is built to acknowledge that they will practically miss on prospects, and that success is a function of a rate of return against the odds.

In short, I think Hinkie gets criticism for how he gets his "bullets" but that doesn't obscure the fact that the guy has stockpiled a lot of ammo. More shots might mean more misses, but it also means more chances to hit.

With Noel and okafor they will have more than enough to compensate. Philly in retrospect could be lucky to be at 3 as we might have to be 4. Nothing to say about embody don't wish injury on anyone

By the way this is the same injury durant has bill Walton had etc

so sad..embiid was in the house (wearing a custom made soccer jersey). everyone, from all teams, was consoling him.

as much as i love basketball, as a physician i love medicine...the navicular bone is NO JOKE. thats the bone that basically holds all of our weight transfer. at 7ft tall thats important!

Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better

Pompey article today says one source mentioned concern that the injury could be career threatening. Scary stuff. Hope this second surgery gets him healthy.

I would offer a second round pick for Embiid. Keep him on the bench until Embiid shows he can handle the minutes. No deal that has cap implications.

It's not the same injury..Durant injured his 5th metatarsal versus Embiid stress fracture in the navicular bone..
