Knicks on the brink of landing Crawford
Monday, July 12, 2004
BY DAVE D'ALESSANDRO
Star-Ledger Staff
After 10 days of negotiations and number-crunching, the Knicks are closing in on a multiplayer deal that will net them Chicago free-agent guard Jamal Crawford as early as today or tomorrow.

The Knicks wouldn't confirm the sign-and-trade agreement they will make for the four-year veteran, but the Bulls were said to agree to the terms late last night.

From Our Advertiser

Leading the parade to New York is Crawford, who became expendable after the Bulls drafted point guard Ben Gordon last month despite leading Chicago with a 17.3-point scoring average last season. He will sign a six-year contract valued at roughly $55 million.

Along with Crawford, the Knicks will also receive veteran power forward Jerome Williams, whose once-legendary energy earned him the nickname Junkyard Dog; and Eddie Robinson, a once-promising small forward who bombed out in Chicago after $31 million contract five years ago.

Going to Chicago is nearly half the Knicks roster, according to an NBA official familiar with the trade's principals. They include Shandon Anderson, Moochie Norris, Cezary Trybanski, Frank Williams and Othella Harrington. It was unclear whether the Bulls were going to include forward Chris Jeffries in the trade.

Knicks president Isiah Thomas, who is in Long Beach to watch his summer squad play, refused to comment last night. Crawford's agent, Aaron Goodwin, could not be reached for comment.

Big trade...I was reading about it all weekend....This means as of now, our roster is

Nazr
Sweetney/KThomas
TT/JYD/Eddie Robinson
Houston/Crawford/Anfernee
Steph

That is only 10 roster spots......Looks like Ariza will make the team...that's one spot....who else? Barret? Dermarr? Hawkins? Chan?

It also says in the news, the Knicks may land Ilgauskis....I'd love to know who they are talkiing about...maybe Nazr and KT? I still don't think Z is the type of center we need, but, he is a definate upgrade.....but it looks like we are not focusing on defense this upcoming season....

Z?
Sweentey/JYD
TT/Robinson/Ariza
Houston/Crawford
Steph/Penny

If the Crawford trade goes down as suggested above and the trade is Nazr and KT for Ilgauskas (which is not a bad recovery plan for Cleveland after the Boozer Blunder), At that point I would be comfortable to split the MLE on 2 players, perhaps Doleac for 3-4 yrs and Vin Baker for 1-2 yrs. Then the lineup going into next season would look like:

C Z, Doleac, Mutombo
PF Sweetney, JYD, Baker
SF TT, Erob
SG Houston, Penny
PG Marbury, Crawford

IR: Ariza, Barret, Chan

Definite improvement over last year's squad.

I still can't believe a trade of Crawford, Junkyard Dog and Eddie Robinson for Shandon Anderson, Moochie Norris, Cezary Trybanski, Frank Williams and Othella Harrington is being thrown about. That's INCREDIBLE for the Knicks.

You get bigger, younger, it's a 3 for 5 so it frees up roster spots, it get's rid of Anderson AND Moochie.

So essentially the deal is FWill for Crawford with all of the added extras for the Knicks. Amazing if true.

Yeah...I did forget about Deke.....martin, when you break it down like that it seems almost too good to be true....I still don't understand why the Bulls want Frankie when they have Gordon, Dupree, Kirk...

I just can't imagine the Bulls being that dissapointed in JYD and ERobb, that they are willing to take on Shandon Anderson and Moochie Norris. F Williams, and the two expiring make sense, but Norris? And although D Mutumbo keeps claiming he will retire if traded, what would that matter to the Bulls? That means his salary comes off this year. Or does the retirement block the trade? If this does happen, Isiah is the anti-Layden. Making a trade that helps us completely and rids ourselves of really the last of the bad contracts of Layden's 6 year reign. And Tim, Anfernee, + ERobb all come off in 2 years which will be strong for trading next year. I know its a wait, but imagine how strong we could be opening day 2006?

i was big time down on this trade for the knicks, but after seeing the players we have to give up, it is a no brainer. im not a big crawford fan but this is a steal for the knicks. i would also do the kt and deke for ilgauskus because i want sweets to start at pf. if this happens the knicks should have a pretty good and much younger squad.

If it does go through, I have a feeling it wont be as big as everyone says. Either way, it would be great to get Craw, and imo, even better to get rid of Shandon. Anything else is just an extra.

Man if we can make this trade and net someone like Big Z we are looking at a real nice team next year. If IT pulls this off he will be nothing short of a miracle worker.

I hate to rain on everyone's parade. I'd love either or both of these trades. But keep one thing in mind. Isaiah did two big trades since coming to the Knicks. Was there any gossip about either move prior to the actual trade?

True....but sign and trades are different. For one, the players agent is involved and that means there is automatically going to be press about it.
