Mavericks set sights on Jeremy Lin

The Dallas Mavericks are firmly in the mix to sign free-agent point guard Jeremy Lin, according to league sources.

Dallas only has limited funds to offer, but sources told ESPN.com that Lin is giving the Mavericks strong consideration even though he can likely make more money elsewhere.

Lin's relationship with Mavericks forward Chandler Parsons from their days as teammates in Houston, sources said, has kept Dallas in the race despite its lack of financial flexibility. Parsons, of course, had a huge hand in the recruiting of DeAndre Jordan to the Mavericks in the richest free-agent score in team history.

Dallas has a huge hole at point guard after the free-agent departures of Monta Ellis (to Indiana) and Rajon Rondo (to Sacramento). The Mavericks willingly let those players go to create the needed salary-cap space to strike deals with Jordan and Wes Matthews, but they now need a starting point guard.

The Mavericks are close to striking a deal to re-sign veteran guard J.J. Barea and still have Raymond Felton on the books, but Lin has emerged as Dallas' top free-agent priority at this point after the team landed Jordan and Matthews.

One possibility, sources said, is that the Mavericks could waive-and-stretch Felton's contract if they get a commitment from Lin to create a salary slot of $2.6 million.

The Mavs also have the salary cap-room exception of $2.8 million available, a slot that could go to Lin or Barea.

ESPN.com's Tim MacMahon contributed to this report.

Let's go Knicks. That's amare

Lin would fit in with the style of play for Dallas, with HIGH IQ players and multiple shooters and defender, on TOP OF a MOBILE ATHLETIC Center like Jordan who is much better than Tyson Chandler
They have a motion OFFENSE, with 4 shooters to spread the floor, with constant ball and player movements, both screens and OFF THE BALL, with Jordan as a great fit

He made Tyson Chandler look like a legit NBA scoring threat and could do the same for Jordan and would fit in perfectly of the bench and their style of play
With shooters and versatile talents with HIGH IQ, 3 and D of Wesley Matthews, a versatile OFF talent Chandler Parsons, and an aging Dirk, with Jordan

So a 2man game with Lin/Jordan Lin running the PnR Jordan with 3 other shooters to spread the floor and all of them can also handle the ball with HIGH IQ with Matthews/Parsons/Dirk and all can POST UP/MAKE GREAT CUTS as well

As well as Lin running the PnR with any of the other players with Jordan down low

With Devin Harris/JJ Barea/Lin, those are 3 cost efficient PG's like the way RB's are now being used in the NFL for timeshare instead of the traditional work horse backs

With Charlie V and STAT being possible vet min players back as well, they would fit in as bench players in Carlise's philosophy of TEAM basketball, with Matthews and Jordan being very good defenders, and Dirk being a LEGIT 7 footer as well that could help Jordan when he is out of position as he helps his team mates for rebounds/ help protecting the paint/ boxing out a Center at times

While Dirk can still score in multiple ways, with PnR's, mid post, high post, even deep post depending on match ups, and spread the floor to pull the opponents PF out for Jordan to get more 1v1 opportunities

I was thinking Dallas would sin and trade lin and take back calderone. He was successful there. And we'd have lin back.

Scrub is pretty harsh. Lol. He's a playmaker who needs the ball in his hands. I think Dallas is a good fit
Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better
