I saw the last second changes in both mocks and then a very late one back to mudiay. On TV they were saying mudiay and then berman kept pumping out the trey lyles stuff. Something wasn't right like they just made and changed their minds minute to minute at the end

I think the media was definitely changing their minds moment to moment.

I'm sure the Knicks were hoping Okafor fell and then ran through a series of options in the five minutes they had - some trade down options, KP, Mudiay, maybe Winslow, maybe Stein, maybe even Kaminsky.

Once we got 4 we knew we'd be at the whim of whatever happened above us and to some extent what offers we got from below.

In the end, I can love with the pick, after being dismayed. I don't think KP was their first choice, but he was a solid choice with how things fell. At 4, you can't blame them for exploring their options. Maybe they switched back to Mudiay but then realized they had a shot at Jerian Grant and felt more comfortable taking KP. I know Grant allowed me to feel a lot more comfortable with the KP pick.

You think so? Maybe it was a lot of trades to consider? What to do if the order of the draft changed? Or do you think it was weeks of prep work and then they just went all impulsive?

I kind of sensed things too......Like:

Some jerk in the war room convinced the team that we would be able to trade Zinger. Rookie mistake. You might LOVE Zinger's potential. But he is not right for this team.

Yeah, I feel Grant is more prepared to contribute right away than Mudiay. All joking aside, I think he's more prepared to contribute next season than THJ. Mudiay could be a stud, but he would've needed time learning the league, our offense and shooting.

I started a thread about Grant during the tourney. I love LOVE love his game. I was fascinated by the KP pick, mostly because its a VERY UN-CAA un-Melo un-Dolan un-Isiah pick so I was like wow... ok, lets see how this pans out. When the guy said "Grant is going to the Knicks" I jumped up, pumped my first and hollered PHUCK YEA and that was when I started posting on UK. I figured we had ZERO shot at him because he would be too high a pick to aquire. I feel like we got so lucky. Phil said they were picking another guy in the KP interview, so its clear they had a taker for THjr before the draft. I wonder if they had a list of players or Grant targeted? Either way Im thrilled about Grant. He could start tomorrow I bet

He was just keeping us guessing.

Someone on the radio mentioned that Phil was always cagey when talking about Porzingis- always saying that he had never seen him play and didn't know much about him.

The only drama for him was whether Russell or OK4 were going to be available at 4.

I was stunned when Hinkie took OK4- really thought he would take Porzingis to spread the floor or trade with.

Lyles and Kaminsky were trade down options.

I think he already knew about Mudiay not being the one when he commented that we had our "lead" guard, but I had also heard Fraschilla say that Mudiay's workout had not been great.

Don't know if Winslow was ever in the mix, and in some ways not taking him was a way of telling Anthony that things were going to be different.

Yep - I'm thrilled with Grant too. He was someone I coveted if we traded down. I would've been fine just taking him at 4, so getting KP and Grant felt like something of a coup. You have the risky high ceiling guy and also the very heady NBA ready PG. It was a great move.

At one point before the draft I said my ideal would be to get WCS and Grant. So KP and Grant is not a bad haul at all - KP obviously has more upside than WCS (though WCS still has the more defined game and plenty of defensive upside - the injury issue did make taking him seem dicier though).

I should've waited before posting on UK

eh.. its all in the family. I wasnt much of a WCS fan but I loved the idea of a line up with him, Galloway, Carrol, Melo and possibly a pricey guard like Dragic. When I heard WCS was dropping because of a foot problem or he refused a medical I felt a dark cloud looming, so Im really glad we didnt go there. Probably nothing though... but Im with you. We got both ends of the spectrum. I really good NBA ready PG from a hoops family. I actually didnt know he Horace Grant's nephew etc.

Yup, Phil made a last minute mad dash to Silver to pick Stein but luckily Mills hit him with the tranq dart before he could make it...

I wrote on a different thread that with the pick of Grant at 19' it seems as if the 4th pick was a throw in. As hard as I try, I can't remember when was the last time the 1st round pick has come in and turned the team from a rags to riches story.

Im wondering what mystical person with the 4th pick some were thinking would make them so enthusiastic?
Philly's owner is a hedgefund guy, and Oka4 as an asset himself was worth the price to get him.

My hope would have been they draft on need but most of us have read for weeks, Towns, Oka4 and russell would be gone. Suprise was Lakers taking Russell.

So if Zinger is not the man, who is? Trade down and get Lyles and Frank?

Id rather we strike out with Kris then go safe and watch this kid in 3 years be an all star stud.
There was only three trades last nite when most thought it was gonna be a real interesting nite.

agree. Phil's comment about his defense was only regarding man to man and the guys he struggled against were pro men, not 6'8 frontcourt players from schools where nobody goes pro. As a help defender and rim protecter KP is already excellent. His attitude is a blessing. Know what he said he was most excited about come joining the NBA? "I can work out anytime. If I want to shoot at midnight the gym is open."
The guy is as Americanized as it gets. He's a movie junkie. He has no language barrier and no culture barrier.

I was hoping we would be able to move THJ for Booker, but Grant is equally capable and may turn out to be the better player
Thank God Fisher is no longer our coach, now let's get Calderon out of here:)

yeah, he sort of reminds me of Mozgov in that way. Mozgov came over and was thrilled to be in NY. i like KP's personality. gives me a good feeling about him. he seems like a competitor - he wasn't scared of the spot light last night, just seemed a little sad to be booed. anyway. we'll see, but I have cautious optimism for him.
