Im sure some of you are not old enough to remember him but he was a 7-3 center for the Pacers from Marist college who had a very good career as a C. Not dominant but could play with all of the top guys--on their level. Didn't play the same minutes as some of the guys like Patrick Hakeem but his per minute production Im sure was just below theirs. He was NOT NEARLY as athletic and or skilled as Porzingis at the same age--and he was 22 coming into the league. You can kind of see from this video some very similar characteristics. But I imagine that if Rik Smits was as athletic as Porzingis and had the range to go along with the low block game he had--he wouldve been more of a 25-30 points per 36 minute % than a 20 -21 point guy.

If Porzingis is Rik Smits, he is almost definitely the right pick at #4.

That being said, I guess people are worried after seeing highly touted Euros like Darko Milicic, Maciej Lampe and Nikoloz Tskitishvili turn into nothing. Not to mention Weis. But that being said, if we take Porzingis, I'm going to assume we did our due diligence and it's the best pick. Considering the only plausible alternative at #4 was Mudiay and I think his stock is dropping, I think Porzingis has to be the pick.

Also imagining a frontcourt of Porzingis, Greg Monroe, Carmelo Anthony. At a minimum, it's intriguing.

Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Solid player. Had 12 NBA seasons and made 1 all-star appearance. Respectable but not great advanced stats. I'd take him with a pick in the teens.

Smits used to get under Ewing's skin and always gave him trouble. The biggest issue for Smits was his feet. He was a very good player.
I'm tired,I'm tired, I'm so tired right now......Kristaps Porzingis 1/3/18

What I remember about Smits is that Charlie Ward blocked his shot in one of those Knick vs. Pacers playoff battles. Wasn't Rick Smits career cut short due to knee issues?

You gotta be really young not to have seen Smits. He was a traditional big man. Now bigs like Porzingis handle the ball like guards.

Zings is light years ahead athletically. So the comparison is not a good one other than both being 7'4" and Bonn Porzingis may be a complete bust but his upside is far greater than Smits.

I don't see Zings as a late first round pick. The skills are there. It's all about how they will translate in the NBA and right now no one knows but after screwing up our year long tank it would be nice to hit a home run at 4.

Smits was slow and would lumber down he court but he gave Ewing problems because he was a great shooter and very good book shot. Now most bigs stretch the floor and the really good ones handle like a guard. Hopefully that will be Porzingis in the pros.

After putting up with that disasterous season we need a multiple time all star at 4 not a bust, rotation player or borderline allstar

Porzingis is nothing like Smits as a basketball player.

I love Smith, but there is a huge difference from playing in Indy to NY. If this dude was in NY, he would not have been a success. Something about this city that scares the heck out of most people.
Thank God Fisher is no longer our coach, now let's get Calderon out of here:)

I don't see Rik Smits in Porzingis. Porzingis reminds me of Detlef Schrempf. A much taller Schrempf.

Exactly! That frontline is one of the few scenarios that would get me to care about this team again. They will struggle defensively in the beginning but Zings is so athletic that Once he gets stronger and learns NBA defense without fouling he can be a great defender. He should already be a good rim protector at 7'3"

Cole is an adequate backup and compliments him well

I much prefer a front court of Carmelo, Monroe, and Stein

Kentucky defenders are well coached and they have proven to be great pros
