Wants to sign a shorter deal and is supposedly intrigued by living in LA.

But maybe Phil Jackson can do some Zen Mind Meld and convince him NYC weather is superior to that 70 degrees and dry all year round bowlsheet.

The Bulls are still gonna match whatever offer sheet he signs. He's just working his contract so he's ready for a new contract when the cap goes way up in two years just like a lot of guys are gonna do.

Jimmy Butler is a RFA. Whatever we offer will be a smaller contract than what Chicago can offer. If he signs a contract with us, any contract, that means it's pretty much guaranteed to be matched by Chicago.

Understood. Just sounds to me like he isn't so high on staying in Chicago anymore. If he makes it clear he does not want CHI to match, or, signs a one year deal, or some other scenario like that could be possible, I guess. But yeah, I know it's highly unlikely and probably impossible. Just throws cold water on the "Butler wants to stay in CHI above all other options" line of thinking that has been the conventional wisdom so far.

This is why Greg Monroe at 16 mil would be a bargain. Butler is about to make 35-40 mil a year in a couple years, as will every other star FA at that time.

His only play here is to say "I'm playing out and then leaving", That forces them to trade him. Basically he plays his deal out and bulls lose him for nothing. New team gets his bird rights and can get him the max. He can get an opt out after to years to get new max deal if he plays up to it. Its what melo did.

I don't see a knick play here except a trade for Melo. It would balance the bulls and make them contenders. I suppose Melo would be game as he was very interested in Chicago.

that would be great. We would get a better overall player with cap room to spare

If he takes a 1 year QA like Monroe did in Detroit I would hope the knicks make a case for him coming to NYC in 2016. If Russell drops to NY too it would be a great lineup. The bulls could sign it and look to trade him in the season, then again everybody is getting a cap bounce so I doubt it. NY and LA would have to both be in contention for him too.

They definitely won't want to offer him a one year deal (at $17mil), but I think his leverage is that if they don't, then he will only sign a one year qualifying offer with them, which as we saw with Monroe would make him largely untradeable (because the team aquiring him lose his bird rights or something)and so he would walk after next season and they would get nothing.

You never know, if he plays hard ball, maybe he is obtainable this offseason. Or maybe the Bulls fall bag position will be to offer him a one year max, and then try to trade him during the season.

Butler had a great year but he had a pretty good team around him. To trade him for melo makes it HIS team. This would have to be Phils primary ball handler and alpha floor general. If this personality and skill set is conducive to the triangle and a young knick team then its a good deal. Melo if healthy is a better player but I'm looking at building forward.

The scenario is we draft first and don't have the luxury of knowing what we get in free agency.

If this is possible Kristaps with Monroe and Butler would be a nice infusion of young talent core. We can put a Brendan Bass at PF and Kristaps on the wing. Phil needs to put a promising group together for 2016 free agent group that can complete the roster.

This is not about ridding of Melo, but putting an eye on the future. Bulls with Pau, Noah and Rose could use Melo. That team would have a nice two year window to give Cleveland a hard time.
