In a high-risk, high-reward move, the Los Angeles Clippers are discussing a deal with the Charlotte Hornets to acquire guard Lance Stephenson, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Clippers would send forwards Spencer Hawes and Matt Barnes to the Hornets, sources said. Talks have been ongoing for several days, but the proposed deal is yet to be considered imminent.

For the Clippers, this would be a fascinating proposition. Stephenson, 24, is a talented but temperamental player who turned out to be a free-agent bust for the Hornets. Charlotte has been desperate to unload Stephenson since early in the 2014-15 season.

Nevertheless, the Clippers need athletic, talented wing players to compete in the Western Conference, and there’s hope that Stephenson would fit better into a more talented, veteran-laden Clippers team that more closely resembles the Indiana Pacers than the Charlotte Hornets did. The Clippers are strapped under the salary cap and need to find creative ways to improve their roster.

Stephenson has two years left on his contract, but the 2016-17 season is a team option of $9.4 million. So, the Clippers would only be committed to paying him the $9 million owed this season – and could then let him go if things don’t work out. For Clippers president and coach Doc Rivers, he’d be counting on Stephenson to recapture the production of his four seasons in Indiana, where he developed into an important player on a two-time Eastern Conference finalist.

Hawes has three years, and $17 million-plus left on a free-agent deal that he signed in summer 2014. He struggled for the Clippers and was unable to consistently crack the rotation. The Hornets are desperate for perimeter shooting, and he would give them a stretch-four man with good three-point range and passing skills. Barnes has one year at $3.4 million left on his deal, and would bring Charlotte wing defense and toughness.

Paul and Stephenson in the same backcourt A match made in hell. This move could have a chance if they use Lance to lead the second unit.

WOW! That is surprising. I view this as desperation from the Clippers and at the same time supreme confidence from Doc. He believes he can get thru to Stephenson and get the best out of him. He might be right.

How do you know if they haven't been talking for a while?? The Knicks can't make trades cause we don't have any assets anyone would be interested in.

We should've pursued Stephenson if our intent is to win with Melo. He was a low risk-high reward proposition, which we desperately needed given how devoid of talent this roster is.

Nope, look at that deal it was a trash swap.... Phil was smart not to get involved because Lance would of just ate cap space, and the clippers did not get any kind of pick back.

Bird couldn't get through to Stephenson, neither could Jordan. Nix is right that this smacks of desperation on Rivers part.

Clips also get out of Hawes deal. Also, it is a contract year for Lance. Seems worthwhile for the minimal risk in my opinion.

I would never let him come back here, it would be a disaster. Even Artest, later in his career, admitted it would have been tough for him to have played in NYC when he was young.

J.R. is a knucklehead, but I personally don't recall him ever pushing a woman down some stairs.

Stephenson has more of an edge. Too bad, because he really looked like he was shaping up for a time at Indiana.

I dont recall Lance doing that as an NBA player either. But I do recall JR Smith as an NBA player running a stop sign and wound up killing his friend in the car. The same JR Smith that had over 25 points against his license.

If this happened now it would be national news. Back then the media didn't care so it got more or less buried unless you were paying attention to basketball news. Also that is the off the court stuff, a lot of rumors point to him being a locker room cancer.

I like the idea of Lance, but after saying see ya to JR comes off a bit hypocritical.
