i thought i'd volunteer some come choices to filter decision-making or wish-listing. and no: "take the best player available" is an invalid response or a copout.
build a team from "triangle scratch" even if melo is here
acquire a player to hide melo's flaws while trying to win now

Can't we do both?

After investing $120 million in an older dude like Carmelo, it really makes no sense to try to build a roster that will win ten years from now.
Thank God Fisher is no longer our coach, now let's get Calderon out of here:)

Exactly why we will likely trade Melo at some point during the rebuild. Dude went for the $ grab and will miss his best chances at a chip. He'll own that decision and do very well for himself as a businessman.

But we'll (hopefully) focus on an actual build-for-the-future kind of team. That's why we need to score something special in this draft. I wish it would be Towns, and maybe it will. But even if not, we're going to get a solid player to build around.

I see Phil trying to do both. Draft a kid who can be a foundational piece over the long term and maybe go for free agents who have some youth but enough experience to help right away. I also see them making a minimal offer to some older vet to provide some professional leadership that Memo can't (an Elton Brand type).

Melo should have nothing to do with who we pick. At 4 in this draft you can still get a impact player. For example mudiay may be raw BUT in a couple years he may very well be the best player to come out of this draft

This. Just wondering who the pick would be to hide Melo's flaws/win now and who the pick would be to build for life beyond Melo?

Phil is clearly doing both. He's investing in the future and also looking for young vets who can win with Melo now. Besides Melo has the kind of game that should allow him to play for 5 more years. That's a long time in NBA years. We already have a mostly young roster and will be bringing in prospects to be developed in the D League. Phil said he wants a future and present component to the team.

Time waits for nobody.

Is Phil strong enough to create a foundation and then retire and watch from out west as someone else builds on it?

How will our aging star react if Phil is thinking too much into the future?

Melo has already commented on his distaste for a young PG, and has been seen with OK4, and Winslow, who is with the same agency as he is-right?

What is the time frame for "life beyond," by the way?

This is kinda why i was hoping we could have done a sign and trade with chicago a year ago. I still believe melo fits better as a secondary piece instead of the main guy

Nahhhh- we wanted Mirotic, Butler, and Noah, for Anthony and Bargs.

Yes agree. We have to be practical. Some creative ideas are appreciated though but they can't work in reality.

Melo is here and will be here. He is an ended-product. Just build around him at this stage.

i just dont think you can go far building around him especially at this point in his career, great scorer just doesnt have the overall talent

You know i wouldn't doubt if Phil and Melo have some kind of verbal agreement to where if in two years Phil doesn't have this team to where Melo sees them as a team that's ready to contend that Phil will look to trade Melo to a place he wants to go. That's how much time i'm giving Phil to have the Knicks ready to compete every year cause he had last year to wipe the team clean of money and whatever players and now i give him two years to build this team obviously starting with this off season. If Phil does it right and gets a couple of good players/starters to play next to Melo and whatever he does in the draft whether it be making the pick at 4 or making a trade and then when the cap goes up next year he should be in position to finish the build.

I think Melo would fit even better with the Bulls with Hoiberg as the head coach then he would of with Thibs cause he couldn't give Thibs the type of defense that Thibs would expect.

That's what we should do but it sure looks like Phil will go for fit before he goes for BPA. Hopefully the best fit will end up being the BPA.

possibly. Im not bashing melo im just being honest. After watching him since high school this simply what he is. He is the perfect secondary piece to provide offense but i just dont think you can be a contender built around him especially as he is now in his 30s
