Great article on the methods Cleveland are using to beat the Warriors.

Cleveland is taking away the Splash Brothers and daring anyone else to beat them. So far, it's working.

Once is luck. Twice is coincidence. Three times, you have a pattern. The Cleveland Cavaliers' defense is for real, and it is causing the Golden State Warriors' offense to look like a sports car with the parking break stuck on.

Yes, causing. The Warriors are making uncharacteristic errors and have shown flashes of solving Cleveland's strategy, most notably in the fourth quarter of Game 3. But so far the story of the NBA Finals is that the Cavaliers, who ranked 20th in defensive efficiency this year and 17th after acquiring center Timofey Mozgov, have proven to be the one team that can actually halt Golden State's symphony of chaos.

They're doing it because they've made a decision and carried it out to the extreme. No matter what happens, they won't let Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson beat them.

Anyone else? Go right ahead. We dare you.

The whole article has GIFs and more explanations.

Cleveland's defense is awesome...I didn't understand why Houston had two near 40 year olds chasing Curry...That said, LeBron has a chip on his shoulder..He thinks he is the MVP and he is showing the world...He is showing everyone that he is head and shoulders better than Curry..They have no one that can stop him...So he has made it an ISO game..LeBron against who ever they throw at him one on one...

I watched last nights game and think the Warriors figured the Cavs out but to little to late. What I saw was poor screens set by GS and once Lee got into the game the screens became solid. Thee Warriors played into Cavs hand in the beginning and then GS found their SSOL mode. But when all is said and done Curry was bitch slapped by Della until he started standing up for himself. If Curry comes playing like he did again no way the Warriors win. He has to take it over from the tip. Also Barbosa totally killed Della.

Reminds me of the Mike Tyson quote about everybody having a plan until they get punched in the face. The Warriors keep getting punched in the face with physical play on both ends of the court. They are playing intimidated for the most part.

The Cav's defense has been great, but I don't think they hold Curry to 2 of 15 3FGA again like Game 2. Looked to be some carryover in the first half last night, but he eventually found himself in the second half.

Nice to see Lee fix the Warrior's offense last night.

Somwhere Phil is smiling at himself.
SAS broke Nash's nose and put that SSOL out to dry to take a series.
Cav's have to put some fear in the splash brothers, and without JR getting suspended!
No doubt warriors have the firepower to turn this series around but playong "footloose and fancy free" is harder in the finals or against a physical team.

Cav's are ADAPTING and I hope Blatt gets some credit for it. Sure he has Lebron, but he has lost Varajao, Love and Kyrie and is up 2-1 in the finals.
Give the man some credit.

huge credit to Blatt.

Also, GS plays great defense too but they are young and inexperienced. Very common.

This has nothing to do with Phil. Cleveland and GS were both top of the league in threes.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

No it does still have a lot to do with Phil's point. Cleveland went and got Moz and in the playoffs they can switch up to a more traditional style. Lebron is the Penetration along with Moz at the rim. It's exactly what Phil talks about. The 3's aren't the focus of the offense. They are the result of the penetration.

Apparently Blatt is getting credit for managing and LeBron is doing the coaching.

GS is a great team with a very good coach that runs an excellent offense.

Cleveland has no offense. Their offense is horrendous and really hard to watch.

We can twist what phil said all day but he still came across like an idiot and I am sure he wishes he can take that back.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

In a course of a game threes are very important but when the game is on the line and you need buckets why in the hell was GS passing up two points for three. I was scratching my head why are you jacking up threes when the layup was there. These perimeter teams don't get to the line at all. I hate to say it but the Warriors are not putting pressure on the Cavs.

Wait until they play David Lee 32 minutes. They will score 108-110 points. They have got NOTHING out of the C spot and then you start playing 4-5 basketball. It was ok during the season when Bogut would give you 6 and Speights 6 as well--and the other guys played well. right now its a complete imbalance--you CANNOT win without getting some interior scoring and team playmaking.

Im looking 4ward to the next game I think GS wins by 20.

That Mike Prada article Nixluva pointed to is pretty good. For perhaps the first time this season, GS is getting seriously out coached, from the bench and on the floor. Yes, the adjustments they made toward the end of the game last night mostly worked but it's a mystery to me why they didn't figure out what Cleveland was up to earlier and make immediate adjustments. Some of the players seem to have mostly figured it out, Livingston, for example, and maybe David Lee, but it's unclear if Kerr has sorted it out yet. I think one issue is that Cleveland really does, at this point, look different than every other team GS played this year. The combination of a risky defense based on taking Curry and Thompson out of their games with a rather odd offense based on Lebron playing PG is odder than, say, the Clippers (who did clobber GS at least once this season).

I love ugly basketball where all the possessions means the world..You remember a deflection, a turnover, a missed free throw( or two by Shump down the stretch), every tough shot..Cav's have slowed down the possessions and made GS play their style...Curry hit some tough, tough shots last night down the stretch..Can't wait for game 4..

Phil was just speaking from decades of experience in winning titles and you think he didn't know what he was talking about? We all know GS is a great team. That's not the point of what Phil was saying. It may not have been perfectly expressed in a tweet, but you know damn well that he's been in the crucible of the finals so many times that he knows exactly what he's talking about.

GS will have to actually change what they've been doing in order to win this series and IMO that proves what Phil was talking about. Perhaps other teams didn't know what to do in order to slow GS down, but I believe Phil did. The Cavs clearly did. I don't know if the Cavs can keep up this level of play with all their injuries, but we'll see.

GS is not a physical team....Their leaders (splash brothers) are finest players.....It's like watching an graceful fighter that uses speed and techique verses a street fighter thats all muscle. The finals are won with the team that has the most grit. And when your leader is the leader of grit (Lebron) vs GS leaders are finest articians, grit wins everytime.

The funny thing is this is the case even in the gym. There are times when guys are running the court. All it takes is myself and some old school guys with cut off sweat pants to stop them. These young guys don't know about the 1990's knicks defense and grit. Thats what Phil is trying to bring back to the garden.
