Since we can get Towns or Okafor for me the equation that I have believed in is a multi asset trade down.

Lets take our position of strength at 4 and turn it into a higher CUMULATIVE return. A Money ball approach. Maybe we get 2 picks and a young player plus a solid draft choice where we can still take a player of value to the team.

The A's have used this approach for years and they are always in the playoffs.

I just tried to use this as example.

If we did get Kaminsky and then we added Wilson Chandler and a 2016 1st round pick----and this is just example--is the cumulative return higher than just Mudiay? If you believe Mudiay is the next Magic then no its not. If you believe hes a good player but can be marginalized by what we already have then your answer might be yes even if Mudiay end s up the better player.

I like this kid Fuzaro. If the Knicks got kaminsky Fuzaro a solid NBA player and a restricted 2016 pick--that would be golden.

Here is the position of strength the Knicks are in. We OWN WCS we own him right now hes ours. HOW much will a team pay us for him if he is wanted that bad. The return has to be exceptional and it could be if we get teams bidding in. You guys got it? Im just making examples of trades--perhaps we can get even higher value back. The first 3 picks are dead set--we are the players. We OWN the draft from 4.

There are still franchise potential guys available at 4. You don't trade down to minimize your chance at a franchise talent. We are desperate for a franchise changing player (who can eventually take over for Melo).

Im ok with this approach to building assets over the next few years.
It would require patience by fans and its owner.

The starphuch in me wants to see LA bet blown away by Russell and Phily take Mundiay leaving oka4 for us, but he logical choice is we need more "luck".......And to be lucky we need opportunities and by trading down we get more of those. We can absorb come cap as well so getting some veteran contracts and more rookies should improve the team. 2016 free agent class would find a more balanced roster more attractive as well.

It depends on the specifics of the deal but I agree with your approach. The same reason we want to trade down may be why other GMs won't want to trade up though

I think the attraction for WCS is going to be high. If I was the Knicks Id consider my position as number 1 in this draft and the compensation model that I agree with is the Chris Webber trade or close to it. Id stay tight too--Id be willing to pick WCS if I had multiple teams who wanted him and were just not coming up high enough--once hes on our team then he is truly our property. So lets ee who may want Mudiay or Stein and just how much they are willing to pay for him.

The Warriors built their team through the draft... over five years.

Knicks need the closest thing to a sure thing they can get in this draft. To me that's Stein, Winslow or Mudiay.

Basketball more than any other sport is a sport where one guy can change your fortunes. The Knicks need to take their best odds to get one of those game changing talents. If they believe Winslow is that guy over Stein or maybe they like Mudiay, I'll be okay with it.

It will be harder to swallow if they essentially trade out of that position for three guys who will be okay and fit the system, which is what I worry Phil will do.

The best way to win in the NBA is not necessarily to draft a lot, it's to draft a star. GSW got good because they drafted the MVP at 7 - 2009 was a deep draft, but they only got there because Minnesota swung and missed wildly on Rubio and Flynn. (which is essentially a microcosm of what you're saying - the Wolves took two pretty good PG prospects instead of the best possible PG prospect - think they'd take a do-over?)

To me, the board has to be Stein, Mudiay and Winslow - in some order. They have to fully and completely vet those guys before moving on down to the Lyles and Kaminskys and Porzingises of the world. The good thing about having $27M in cap room is that we can fix some of the mistakes of not having draft picks by using that cap room wisely.

Ok but generally speaking, the higher the pick the higher the chance at a star. Trading down significantly decreases the ability to land a star. You are listing just one example too. If you trade down and miss out on a star and draft a couple of role players, it will devastate the franchise.

This is a crazy deep draft assuming those picking are selective. I have long advocated trading into a second pick that could compliment #4 whoever that may be. For example if #4 is a center then draft a PG as well further downstream. If we draft a PG at 4, then go for a center (and there are many to choose from). This coming year the team will be young and exciting to watch.

Out past pick #4 though it becomes a pick-your-favorite-color lottery. Lots of these players look real good but not all of them will be that good. If the Knicks do trade down (and anything is possible), we trade out of the second phase of the lottery which is taking a chance on real talent becoming a real star.

I don't like the trades many speculate about. If we're going to take on a mediocre talent too pricey for another team - GET A PICK - don't trade the bird in hand. To suffer through a season like this past one for a couple of rotation player maybees is crazy.

Locking up DeMarre Carroll would be huge.

I am all for these types of deals. WCS and Winslow will be very valuable picks. However, if WCS proves that he can shoot the ball as reported, I would want to hold on to him. He is already an elite defender if you ask me; a little offense would be icing on the cake
Thank God Fisher is no longer our coach, now let's get Calderon out of here:)

winslow is really the only player to be targetting at 4... he will be there and we should take him barring towns dropping...

interesting trade down scenarios.. but if we don't come out of the draft with at least winslow.. it will be a disaster...

If anybody wanted Towns......then WCS can have a similar impact. Towns problem will be learning how to play defense without fouling......WCS understands how to impact defense without getting in foul trouble. So all Towns fans should love WCS.....especially with his surprisingly offensive jumper.....which is the only knock on him. Hes the type of player to put up better numbers in the nba than in college. I dont know any big other than Noah....who is better at guarding PnR. Thats a huge advantage since all teams (except the knicks) run PnR plays.

I would absolutely consider this trade... but I don't see Denver giving up Faried AND Lawson AND 7. If they did... that's a no brainer... though I don't think Stein makes it past Sacramento at 6.

How can you rile against the "starphuch" but then endorse the same concept in the draft? Better to trade down, especially given the Knicks drafting history, than risk drafting a bust. After all, there have been several stars drafted in recent years that have not been taken in the top 4 e.g. Stephen Curry (8th), Klay Thompson (11th), Paul George (11th), Rudy Gobert (26th), Jimmy Butler (30th), Nikola Mirotic (24th-ish), Nikola Vucevic (16th), etc. I think it's best to try and maximize our ability to find this type of player than to put all our eggs into one basket.

It really comes down to who do the Knicks covet the most and if they think they can get that player at #5, #6, #7, #8 or down the line -- what can they get in return for moving out of that #4 slot.

Given our current roster depletion --- I'm hoping we can at least work a 2-1 type deal where we slide down a couple of spots but still get a high draft pick of Phil's preference.

I don't trust moving down that far where the bust potential is extremely high.

I'd want a legit younger veteran player and a pick that is a few slots below our current slot.

If you trade down, and pass on a player who ends up being a star, it cripples the franchise yet again. If someone from lower in the draft works out to be very good, and we draft a bust, then that's just the way thing goes. But trading down lowers the changes of drafting a star, and we don't want to do that to ourselves. There are always exceptions of course, but it's smart to keep our pick for once and draft the BPA.
I just want to see where people stand on this theory of trading down
