Phil got Jose Calderon for Tyson.

http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas-mavericks/post/_/id/4705271/deandre-jordan-tyson-chandler-could-trade-places

Why would Tyson Chandler, who departed from Dallas due to the cold business of basketball once before, wait patiently for the Mavericks' pursuit for his potential replacement to play out?

Perhaps the Mavs can make Chandler a promise: They’ll eventually sign him to a market-value deal, whether it’s with the intention to keep him in Dallas or send him to a contender.

That contender would be the Los Angeles Clippers. Of course, the Clippers would prefer to keep DeAndre Jordan, the third-team All-NBA big man who ranks right up there with perennial All-Star power forward LaMarcus Aldridge as the Mavs’ top targets in free agency. However, Jordan intends to consider all of his options and has privately made it clear that he’s highly intrigued by the possibility of coming to Dallas as a featured attraction for the Mavs.

A sign-and-trade swap of the centers, which has been mentioned in Mavs front-office offseason brainstorming sessions, would make a lot of sense for all of the involved parties.

Jordan has all the leverage in this situation. If he decides to leave Lob City, Clippers coach and president of basketball operations Doc Rivers would be crazy not to cooperate in this scenario. It’s the only way the Clippers could get a legitimate replacement for Jordan next season.

The Clippers are essentially capped out heading into the summer, leaving them with only the mid-level exception to fill the massive void in the middle if Jordan leaves. That’s a fraction of what an average starting center will command this summer, much less a big man of Chandler’s quality.

But if the Clippers take advantage of owning Jordan’s Bird rights, they could potentially plug in Chandler. He’s not quite the rebounder, finisher or rim protector that Jordan is, but Chandler isn’t a drastic downgrade in any of those departments and is a tremendous leader with championship experience. The Clippers, who were a historic comeback away from advancing to the Western finals this season, could certainly contend with Chandler complementing superstars Chris Paul and Blake Griffin.

The Mavs want to do right by Chandler, who has been the epitome of a class act during his two one-season stints in Dallas -- first as the finishing piece of their championship puzzle in 2010-11 and again last season, when the team wasn’t nearly as successful but the big man was every bit as productive and professional. But that doesn’t mean the Mavs’ motives for a sign-and-trade would be purely unselfish.

Dallas would insist that the Clippers also take reserve point guard Raymond Felton, who was the Tyson Tax in last summer’s trade with the New York Knicks. Felton earned a lot of respect from the Mavs with his approach last season, when the longtime starter stayed ready despite playing sparingly, but they’d still like to dump his $3.9 million salary after he officially exercises his player option for next season.

The Mavs could make much better use of that money. For example, it could go to Al-Farouq Aminu, the 24-year-old reserve forward who will be on the market again after his breakout second half of the season for the Mavs, who signed the former lottery pick last summer as a minimum-salaried reclamation project. Keeping Aminu, an athletic, versatile defender who is still developing, would be a critical move for Dallas.

With the Clippers operating over the cap, Felton’s salary is basically pocket change for megabillionaire owner Steve Ballmer.

The benefits for Jordan would be to give his new team maximum roster flexibility and do a favor for his former team on the way out of town.

For Chandler, this swap would provide him a chance to be paid handsomely while competing for a championship in his native Southern California with old friend and former New Orleans Hornets teammate Paul. If Jordan doesn’t choose Dallas -- or if Mark Cuban and Co. lands Aldridge instead -- the Mavs would welcome Chandler back with open arms and a market-value contract.

Wouldn’t that be a win-win scenario worth waiting for?

This would be a dumb move by the mavs and Jordan. Why help out a conference rival when you could deplete a position that was a strength.

Because Jordan could get his five years $100M this way. And there's no way the Mavs would keep Tyson if they got DeAndre.

Anyhow, the point was that Jackson WILDLY undervalued Tyson's worth.

i don't think you can do sign and trades for 5 yr maxes anymore.. he would only get the same 4yr max as the mavs could offer...

So you mean trading players to a conference rival that might help them get to the Finals and which may also prevent you from getting there isn't a good idea?

Slow down, this would be based on DeAndre wanting to play in Dallas. He is from there.
You want to pay him 100 mil to play in NY? I don't think so. You think as a free agent he wants to be in NY? I don't think so.

Tyson is a free agent, he can go anywhere so the sign and trade is really just about trading free agents and making it work financially. This was not about Phil being able to have gotten Deandre for Tyson.
As far as Im concerned, phuch them both. WE saw what Tyson could do, and while Deandre is nice rim protector, he is also a liabilty at the postition. I don't want to pay 20 mil a year to a guy you have to out the game cuz.

Sure, fine. But I want more than Jose Calderon for Tyson Chandler. Dallas has the 21st pick in this year's draft - if we'd gotten that back for Tyson, I'd be fine with it.

Kind of a Catch-22 situation here.

Keep Chandler until the trade deadline, and perhaps get a late #1 from a contending team, but you probably hurt your chances of being in the lottery.

Not sure if Cavs would have wanted Chandler- Mosgov had ties to the Cavs' coach, and . Mosgov is cheaper, younger, less injury prone, and to be honest, he is more versatile than Chandler.

If you don't send Chandler to Dallas when we did, maybe they are out of the playoffs at the trade deadline, and they don't even want Chandler.

Also remember that the Cleveland 1st rounders would be almost like early seconds. Would we rather have pick 13 this year, and #27 this year or next, or had the chance for a top lottery pick this year?

The Chandler trade, and injuries to Calderon and Early helped us get to the point where were could get a top 4 pick in a draft that is about 8-9 deep in terms of excellent talent.

Maybe Chandler gets hurt during the year, a not unheard of thing for him, and his trade value is lowered or even non-existent, but he plays enough to keep from getting a top pick. Knowing our luck, this is what would have happened.

We seemed to have bad luck from every angle this year, some of it self-inflicted. Anthony's insistence on playing when he knew he needed surgery also ended up hurting our chances of getting a top 2 pick.

Just a bad year in many ways, capped off by some lousy ping pong balls.

Nope, that's one of the reason I stayed away from trade ideas with Cleveland. I do not think that highly of Shump, even though he is playing well. He played well in the playoffs for NY too but in the reg. season those ebbs and flows are killer.

I gave Cleveland an A on the trade because they got the 2 best players while also getting a 1st rd pick.

It is a little of a Catch-22 - I'm not saying they should've waited, just gotten more. The terrifying thing to me is that a lot of folks thought the Knicks WON that trade and that Phil got good value for Tyson. More terrifying for our future is that Phil thought that Tyson trade would HELP NY make the playoffs... Rather than get a second round pick in 2014, why not go for a top-15 protected pick in 2015? Dallas, I believe, had multiple first round picks, since they sent some to Boston for Rondo and still have their own pick in 2015.

Anyway, it's water under the bridge. But with JR and Shumpert helping take the Cavs from 19-20 to the NBA Finals and Tyson Chandler now being discussed as a realistic trade target for DeAndre Jordan... and the fact that the Knicks got back two second round picks and Jose Calderon, who is basically dead weight on our cap at this point, for all three of them... it's just pitiful.

Maybe something happened between Tyson and Melo and they had to trade Tyson out to get Melo to re-sign. That sounds like Knicks-like reasoning for trading our Defensive Player of the Year center for pennies on the dollar.

So why did Tyson want the Mavs to get Melo? It had more to do with Tyson and his overall attitude plus his fit withing the triangle. Also, the knicks continue to mismanage their trades by having unwanted players included in the trades. Instead of forcing Felton and Jr on teams they should have taken the 1st rd picks and just cut JR and Felton.

A potential Chandler/Jordan swap does not represent the value of Chandler. This move would be made because Jordan would be planning to go to Dallas as a free agent. Dallas would be trading Chandler to do him a favor, and LA would accept him to save face. LA would never do this in a million years, they would simple want Chandler because they won't be able to get anyone better on the free agent market for the minimum. So the Chandler/Calderon trade is irrelevant.

Why wouldn't Tyson want to be part of a great system as the one run by the clippers? Imagine how impactfull he can be next to Paul and Blake
Thank God Fisher is no longer our coach, now let's get Calderon out of here:)

Am I crazy for thinking that if DeAndre is interested in play off success, at least on paper (minus ownership which I know counts) our potential offering is better than the Mavs?

Who is older & more worn out, Melo or Dirk? Dallas barely made it to the play offs.

Assuming Melo is healthy & we get a top PG (Russel/Mudiay), then adding Jordan puts you in the mix in the east.

nope. The west is stacked. The east is wide open. Lebron is taking a largely NBDL team to the finals. Jordan has flaws, but he is an impact player nonetheless.

I somewhaaaaaat agree with this. I just don't know that DeAndre would see it this way. I think it's going to be hard for a lot of guys to look past the 17 wins and the somewhat common rhetoric (you know, the stuff Barkley or ESPN guys scream every time they have a chance) that the Knicks suck and are a joke.

I see DeAndre wanting to go to Texas moreso than NY. Dallas also has Chandler Parsons, Monta Ellis and more to go with Dirk. They're a more fully realized team. Though they'll lose Rondo and be pretty empty at PG, with the 21st pick in the draft, they can probably get a decent prospect at PG.

Tyson had a bad season. Now you say "keep him to the trade deadline" but based on what we saw of him he sucked. Dalebert was actually decent last year too!.
We got Calderone and Clearanthy and Larkin. Nothing great, but tyson sucked and had a 17mil pay day.
Im not sure too many teams were lining up for that!!!

Now you want more than Calderon? Yesterday I contiplated selling KORS, today its down 24%. Too late. I thought of it, but I did not act on it.
Life is like that. Its easy to make deicsions based on hindsight. I have clarity on that.
