well for the NCAA talents I watch from the eye if I think they can play in the NBA with the changes
Systems/roles/talents around them become different, along with their strengths/weakness's and changes of the 24 second shot clock, 1v1 more, and while Euro talent are much harder to anaylyze as they generally play a much more TEAM oriented game that STATS are the results of the game, usually with less minutes
While with NBA, it is usually playing off STRENGHTS, TALENTS and POSSIBLE HIGHLIGHTS first, WHILE BIG NUMBERS leads to BIG CONTRACTS, however, playing to acquire STATS and playing to Win while in the flow and best interest of the team while accumulating STATS is another thing
Numbers can be manipulated while talent can not
Like many sports and even boxing/fighting,
Being able to dictate the speed, control the tempo, and having a rhythem to the game is very important
PTS
FG %
REBOUNDS
ASS
STEALS
BLOCKS
TO's
intangibles/ability to shoot with both hands/mid range *floater*,/ ability to draw and sell fouls, take charges etc...
Ability to handle the ball
Ability to penetrate and finish with contact, while looking to facilitate as an option, forcing double/triple teams to give to a open team mates for a high % shot, or driving blindly hoping to do so...
what style of play with fit their skill sets and hide their weakness's along with coach/personality etc...
Body type and how they use it to their strenghts and exploit weakness's
For instance, for a player like JO who was thin but STRONG and used length/quickness/strength with great anticipation, no fear, and anger to play,
Though many were BIGGER than him, he was able to recover on DEFENSE and was a GREAT TEAM DEFENDER/SHOT BLOCKER/FINISHER with both hands
LOVED HIS GAME along with Rasheed Wallace, YOUNG KG
ALL players I would look to bring in along with possibly Bynum/Horace Grant/Ewing, assumming we draft OK4 or Towns
LEADERSHIP/DEFENSIVE fundamentals
FOOT WORK/Heart/Motor/fatigue/pace
SPEED/Quickness/ability to spot and go, going left or right/juke
HOW and IFF they are SETTING PICKS/WHEN and HOW TO USE PICKSMAKING CUTS/MAKING PLAYS FOR TEAM MATES, LOOKING FOR HIGH % SHOTS
Anticipation/BB IQ/commmunication/on DEFENSE if they can initiate or play passing lanes/CHEMISTRY
Ajustments by team and players.... which is partially coaching and chemistry with players developped over time...
Strengths/weakness's/along with "potential"
Versatility on OFF AND DEFENSE, WILLINGNESS AND ABILITY TO DEFEND, like Gallo - he had heart and willingness to defend but doesn't have the ability to do so with lack of speed/quickness/athleticism/explosivness
How many positions can they play on OFFENSE
How many positions they can defend on different TIERS with help, without help, if they force their opponent to the help DEFENSE while playing passing lanes
DEFENSE is played on so many different levels, starting with anticipation/BB IQ/team work/timely moves to force opponent to make a mistake
Playing the angles correctly on OFFENSE and DEFENSE, how they use their body to shield others off for post ups, along with passing and passing lanes
If they get beat, can they recover, do they give up, are they foul prone, good decion making?
And then there is also regular season talent and play off caliber talent, clutch gene, along with being able to play on and off the ball, doing little stuff like box out/communicate/understanding of the game BB IQ, playing off opponents strenghts/weakeness's on DEFENSE in which you must have a scouting report of your opponent first which Draymond Green does very well at....
There is a lot I look in to, highlights are highlights, so they are meant to show the positives or weakness's of a player that a game can will show if you watch carefully
The more I am in to a player, the more I pay attention to their abilities
There is a lot more to it, however, some may not understand if they never played BBALL and do not understand period...
Like the effect of someone posting up on you throughout the game, it will ware you done, with no LEGS to shoot, which Lebron James did to James Harden on a mismatch, along with Harden over exerting himself on both DEFENSE and OFFENSE on the games prior to the finals
THE PLAY NEVER STOPS....
like Reddick simply taking away the left hand side of Harden's drive and forcing Harden to JOrdan's help defense, while the other players are ALL READING THIS AND PLAYING PASSING LANES and WAITING IF THEY CAN DOUBLE AND TRAP/GO FOR REBOUND OR RUN DOWN COURT
Then when a shot is put up, if the defense is able to anticipate it for the rebound along with Houston for if their team mates are moving and able to anticipate a shot for rebound or going back for defense
BOTH ARE IMPORTANT for each team
Houston's flaw is they do not know what they are trying to do and have no real plays, as Harden is able to get to what he wants 90% of the time when he plays to score/facilitate and control the pace
Terrence Jones was way too small for Blake Griffen, DMO is out so Josh Smith should have started instead of letting them get in ryhythm
houston also DOES NOT MOVE, a trait that our Mike Woodson team's did with ISO play that does now work in the play offs
EVERY TIME soemone touches the ball, there should be player movememnt to anticipate, open angles for the next move as an option, and attack/anticipate together, with plays to establish an advantage/exploit a match up
They need to catch Jordan in foul scenarious, baiting him, then take over if so....
Depending on the depth of the team, you want to exert the most energy out of your opponents, like Clippers have no depth, so play at a fast pace, but their DEFENSE/REBOUND is very good, so you need to counter that with good spacing/ball and player movement along with pick both on and off the ball
They know who can handle the ball and who can not, so they have to utilize the picks and timing together very well TOGETHER
