We know that Phil needs to bring in a leader.

There are not many out there but if we are going to overpay for someone, that person should be our VOCAL leader in the locker room.

Who can that be?

David West is probably the best option. I would overpay him since he is probably the best leader on the market.

Who else fits that bill?

so here is what phil is thinking ....

Why would Draymond Green come here? Would it be for the less money or for the worse team?

There aren't many leaders in the NBA, which is why the same teams keep making it to the finals, Miami, San an, Dallas (when they had kidd) Boston, Lakers.

People don't realize how important that is. If you don't have a flat out leader, you better have a roster full of veteran profesionals

Wade is a leader and quite vocal.

Phil ain't in NY. If he was there everyday and/or coaching the team, that would be great.

Riley is quite hands on and seems to be there all the time and I'm sure that he never left in the begining.

Pop is definitely a leader. Nice to have those other leaders there as well.

We need someone who is quite vocal day in and day out, plays the right way, and is not scared to call others out (with respect)

I don't buy all that stuff at all..You need talent, a good coach and a competent GM ..All else are a distance last..Riley was the leader with Ewing crew..

If we're going that route, how about Marc Gasol? He's unrestricted, a leader, a defensive stalwart and a perfect fit for the Triangle and to play alongside Melo.

Draft D'Angelo Russell and sign Marc Gasol and we'll be okay in the leadership department.

I agree that the primary job is to improve the talent on the team. There are so few natural leaders in the league, but you have to hope one emerges from the players you have on your team. You can bring in a vet who has those qualities, but they won't necessarily be your best player. Fisher is a guy who was considered a leader in the locker room, which is why Phil felt he could be a good coach.

We have to be more concerned with the talent on the roster. Melo is going to have to step up as well and I think he has been showing some signs of developing into more of a leader. He's wanting to be involved in the process of improving the team and taking ownership of his position on the team. In the end it will likely be by committee as we bring in better players.

Jeremy Lin first interview in Houston he announced he was brought in to be the leader..

Even I can't bring myself to dream that dream!

That would be a slam dunk off season.

I don't *think* Marc Gasol will leave Memphis... but I think he might meet with Phil and have a discussion.

Is that Memphis team ever going to make the Finals? Feels like they might be maxed out as a tough second round team in the West.

Pau said earlier in the year (maybe around All-star game) that he thought Marc would "listen" to certain teams. I think Pau may tell Marc good things about Phil. Pau almost came to NYC at a steep discount last off-season.

And don't forget that was one of the original reasons to acquire Calderon - Olympic Spanish teammate and friend of the Gasol boys. Pau understandly wouldn't take a huge discount... but Phil wouldn't have to ask Marc to take one.

It's a fantasy, sure... but there's more reality to it than hoping Golden State decides they don't want to match a contract for their heart and soul or San Antonio won't match Kawhi, as some around here seem intent on doing.

Bottom line: I hope Marc Gasol is first on the short list of guys Phil calls at 12:00am on July 1st.

Tim Duncan is one of the consummate team leaders in the history of basketball. NAY, the history of organized sports. Seriously, he's one of the top five basketball players of all time. I mean, really? This is a question? There's a question about whether Tim Duncan, who has led his team for 16 years, is a leader? Really?

The coach and the BEST player need to be great leaders for the team to be a success. We need to find a way to bring in a guy like J. Jack to play the point momentarily, until we can actually develop a pure leader. I can actually see Langston G or THJ become great leaders.
Thank God Fisher is no longer our coach, now let's get Calderon out of here:)

Sorry, but you're completely wrong on this, and you don't need to "buy it," its just the truth.

You can never underestimate the importance of player leadership. I've experienced this as an intermediate, high school, and college athlete and as someone who has coached one sport or another for about 28 years. Good player leaders are worth their weight in gold- I know this from talking to other coaches, as well as experiencing it on my own teams.

A good coach is important, as are the other things you mention, but having player leaders who can inspire, set an example, and keep teammates in line is as important a part of a good team as anything you mentioned, and in some cases, even more important. They might follow cues set by a coach, but their role and impact is a force unto itself.

There has to be a balance of many things for a team to be great, but you're fooling yourself if you deny the importance of player leadership.

EnySpree: Can we agree to agree not to mention Phil Jackson and triangle for the rest of our lives?
