This guy at each level has proven doubters wrong.

I love the way the GS Warriors used their D league. I think they got a steal in Macadoo and they really treated their D league team seriously--as in players who wants to win over their own #s. I think he is carving a potential niche to be an energy PG off the bench. He was really good at OS and now he led his team to a championship in the D league. He's a guy who you dont think he can do it but does.

There is more than enough talent to mine players out of the D league and the NCAA to build the back half of any teams roster. Miami got their starting C for the next 10 years out of it this year.

I liked the way Wolters and Thabeet played down the stretch of that league. They started wining games when Wolters came on and Thabeet was the bets defensive big in the D league last year. If he played the way he did in the last 10 all year with the extended minutes--he wouldve been the MVP of the d league. I guess its all beauty in the ye of the beholder. Thaaeet has a scarlet letter on him and guys like Wolters and Craft are just white guys who cant jump and the general public doesnt think can play basketball.

Top-10 D-League Call-Ups Of The 14-15 Season
BY CAMERON SCHOTT

APR 20, 2015 2:33 PM

With the NBA regular season now complete, we take a look at the top ten D-League Gatorade Call-Ups from this year.

1. Hassan Whiteside, Miami Heat (Iowa Energy)

2014-15 Stats: 11.8 PPG, 10.0 RPG, 2.6 BPG

Every NBA season seems to have at least one major story out of the D-League, and this year it was Whiteside. The former second round pick by the Sacramento Kings in 2010 took a long road to get back to the NBA, including stops in the D-League, Lebanon, and China, but eventually showed why he was worthy of an NBA roster spot. Whiteside played just two games in the D-League this year, averaging 21.0 points, 15.5 rebounds, and 6.0 blocks per contest for the Iowa Energy, before Miami extended a contract offer. Once considered too immature and raw for the NBA after declaring for the draft following his freshman season at Marshall, Whiteside used his time overseas and in the D-League to mature and grow into one of the top rebounders in the NBA. His highlight of the year came on February 4th when Whiteside had 24 points on 12-of-13 shooting to go with 20 rebounds. Whiteside will certainly have a future in Miami’s long-term plans as an athletic 25-year-old center.

2. Robert Covington, Philadelphia 76ers (Grand Rapids Drive)

2014-15 Stats: 13.5 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 1.5 APG

The first overall pick in the 2014 NBA D-League draft, Covington never actually played a game for Grand Rapids before he received the Call-Up. Nevertheless, last year’s D-League Rookie of the Year earned the Call-Up due to his impressive season he had with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers last year. He averaged 23.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game in Rio Grande and Philadelphia scooped up the talented 6-foot-9 wing before he took the floor with Grand Rapids this season. Covington ended up starting in 49 games for the 76ers and was the team’s third leading scorer at 13.5 points per game. The 24-year-old out of Tennessee State showed he’d certainly have a role in the NBA.

3. Langston Galloway, New York Knicks (Westchester Knicks)

2014-15 Stats: 11.8 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 3.3 APG

Galloway was a somewhat surprising Call-Up early in the season, as he wasn’t ranked as a Top 30 prospect by the D-League website at the time of his signing, but blossomed into a starting point guard for the Knicks. He was averaging 16.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game in Westchester before earning a 10-day deal with the big league affiliate. While New York struggled, Galloway was a bright spot, averaging 11.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per contest. The undrafted rookie out of St. Joseph’s started in 41 games this year and head coach Derek Fisher spoke highly of his rookie season, telling Kenny Ducey of WFUV Radio, “I think he’s shown the type of mental toughness, and the type of grit, that as the skills develop and the experience comes, he can be a really solid player in this league for a long time.”

4. Jabari Brown, Los Angeles Lakers (Los Angeles D-Fenders)

2014-15 Stats: 11.9 PPG, 2.1 APG, 1.9 RPG

As the D-League’s leading scorer at the time of his Call-Up, it was no surprise that Brown became an instant offensive sparkplug in Los Angeles. He was a late addition, as he only played 19 games in the NBA, but averaged 11.9 points per game while shooting 41.2% from the field and 37.1% from three-point range. Brown ended the year on a high-note, scoring 32 points in the season finale against Sacramento. Head coach Byron Scott told Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News earlier this year that Brown “is one of those guys next year who will belong in this league.” After declaring for the draft as a junior at Missouri and going undrafted, Brown proved that he could play at the NBA level. The 22-year-old will be monitored closely during the Summer League process.

5. Henry Walker, Miami Heat (Sioux Falls Skyforce)

2014-15 Stats: 7.3 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 1.2 APG

Formerly known as Bill, the Kansas State product made an impact for Miami after being out of the NBA for the past two years. He bounced between the D-League, Venezuela, and Philippines before landing with the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Walker averaged 15.1 points per contest for the Skyforce while shooting 44.8% from deep and scored in double-figures in his first four games that he played in for the Heat. He started in 13 NBA games this season and used the D-League to get back into the league and make significant contributions.

6. Tyler Johnson, Miami Heat (Sioux Falls Skyforce)

2014-15 Stats: 5.9 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 1.3 APG

Johnson was one of the biggest surprises from the D-League this season. The Fresno State product went undrafted, but shined in the Summer League with the Miami Heat before he landed with the D-League affiliated Sioux Falls Skyforce. He averaged 12.2 points in the D-League while shooting 54.8% from the field and 46.7% from three before Miami signed him to a 10-day deal. Johnson didn’t see much action on his first 10-day contract, but scored 13 points off the bench in a road win against the Celtics to raise eyebrows during his next 10-day deal. He ended the year with nine double-digit scoring nights and head coach Erik Spoelstra went as far to call Johnson “the model of player development.” The athletic, 6-foot-3 shooting guard will hope to keep his roster spot with another strong Summer League showing.

7. Elijah Millsap, Utah Jazz (Bakersfield Jam)

2014-15 Stats: 5.3 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 1.2 SPG

While his offensive numbers may not jump off the page, Millsap carved out a role in Utah as an energizing defender off the bench. The 27-year-old saw his first NBA action this season after going undrafted in 2010 and averaged 19.7 minutes in 47 games this season. Head coach Quin Snyder praised Millsap’s energy and defensive ability numerous times this season as he stuck with the organization for more than half the year. Millsap should be on an NBA roster again next year as a defensive-minded 6-foot-6 wing.

8. Ricky Ledo, New York Knicks (Texas Legends)

2014-15 Stats: 7.4 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 1.5 APG

After the Knicks found a young asset in Galloway, they went back into the D-League for another Call-Up at the end of the season. Ledo, who was cut by the Dallas Mavericks to create space for Amar’e Stoudemire, played in 12 games for New York and averaged 7.4 points per contest, including a 21-point showing against the Washington Wizards. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban told Marc Berman of the New York post that Ledo “is incredibly talented.” Cuban said the Mavericks “weren’t in a position to give him minutes to help his development” but obviously thought very highly of the 22-year-old. After spending a year at Providence – but never actually playing a game due to eligibility issues – Ledo has immense upside that he showed with a brief stint in New York. He’ll be an intriguing talent to follow over the offseason.

9. Chris Johnson, Utah Jazz (Rio Grande Valley Vipers)

2014-15 Stats: 6.8 PPG, 1.5 RPG, 1.0 SPG

Johnson spent time with three different NBA teams this season, but showed promise in his final 12 games with the Jazz. The 6-foot-6 small forward scored in double-figures during his final three games and showed his strength as a defensive stopper. Johnson, a 24-year-old from Dayton, has now been on five different NBA teams in the past three years, but will look to stick on another roster next season. He’s the type of hard-working wing that makes a positive contribution anywhere he goes.

10. Bryce Cotton, Utah Jazz (Austin Spurs)

2014-15 Stats: 5.3 PPG, 1.2 RPG, 1.0 APG

Cotton was another late addition that showed promise during the final stretch of the season. The 6-foot-1 point guard had one of the top highlights of the season with a left-handed alley-oop in a career-high 21-point showing against the Dallas Mavericks. Head coach Quin Snyder said of Cotton in an article by Aaron Falk of the Salt Lake Tribune, “I think he just fits what we want to do. [I like] his work ethic. I think he’s a communicative point guard.” The 22-year-old rookie from Providence was one of three Utah players on the list and will be another key youngster to watch in the Summer League process.

There are still a lot of talent in the D League and we let a few get away, though we still have some on our D League roster, and made some callups
However, from these past couple seasons, had we brought up some more talents, and continue to add talent in the D League, we could save financial flexiblity to utilize with the cap this summer and in the next couple years to make up for our lack of draft picks

Had we had somehow gotten

Whiteside
Covington
Jabari Brown
Tyler Johnson
Justin Holiday

There are some very good shooters still left
In addition to our own D Leaguers in

Langstanon Galloway
Thanasis
Orlando Sanchez

Backnaski
some others

With our pick this summer, future picks *for trades*, and 2017's FA's with the rise of the cap
Then in 2017, go ALL IN with FA, we could have had a very strong foundation, and still can have one
Though I do believe we will need to trade CA and better utlize his cap space/contract, and needing to obtain assets in the process as well

Virtually about 8 contracts could be gotten as steals in the D League while using our cap space as a foundation of talents for most of our starting 5 with our pick this summer
For the D leaguers, the top ones could be at least rotational players and with a few STARTERS as well

If we are going to run the Triangle

It will take a couple years to develop the system and talents together with young players/chemsitry/execution
With that said, CA wants to compete now, after missing the past 2 playoffs of his career already, and if Houston has interest in him, he will reconsider his no trade clause to make more money with a trade kicker, no states tax, and ability to compete right away

This past year wasn't even considered year 1 as most of the players will not be part of our future, so we will need to be patient if we want to build a legit contending team for a ring and not just get in the playoffs

until aaron craft learns how to create or shoot consistently i cant take him seriously. but thats cute that he won awards in the DLeague
Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better

Hes like a young Prigioni. He wont score many points--but he can make plays otherwise. Hes done the same thing running from day 1 in college through the d league. If he had a better 3 point shot hed likely be on a roster.

Another guy to consider would be Tim Frazier. He had a nice run with the Sixers. I thought he was going to be their point after the MCW trade. Also, he got d league rookie of the year and d league mvp.

My vote for the long long long shot in this year's draft is Tyler Kalinoski, the only senior on the Davidson team and the A-10 player of the year. He has modest stats but a large part of that is McKillop's system at Davidson. Several A-10 players will get drafted this year but Kalinoski will not. However, I suspect he will get invited to, say, Golden State's summer league and I would not be surprised if he lands on a D-league team for a few years and ends up doing okay. He's never going to be a starting guard but on just the right team he might be . . . well, Aaron Craft with a nice 3 point shot.

Here are some highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORJUIq-GZcA. However, Kalinoski is one of those players that you need to watch in a game to see what he's about. He was a complete sleeper before this season and he didn't win the A-10 PoY based on his stats but throughout the season, no matter who Davidson was playing, Kalinoski looked like the best player on the court. His one bad game this year was when Davidson got crushed by Iowa in the tourney. I suspect that sealed his not-going-to-drafted status. Before the tourney there were several articles on Kalinoski as a sleeper. Here's one that covers the basics: http://hoopshabit.com/2015/03/17/nba-draft-sleepers-with-most-to-gain-in-ncaa-tournament/8/.

Nah, he's never going to be a Knick but a few years from now, when Golden State has problems filling out their bench because they are paying Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and Stephen Curry $1 billion a year, I'm looking forward to seeing Kalinoski at the end of the bench.

Number 2 there is just a slew of 2nd round to undrafted guards this year that have the talent level to not only make the NBA but some will do very well. Most years its kind of lucky to find 6-8 NBA players players in the 31-60 range but the draft this year goes deeper than 60 and the number this year will be 14-16. Its really two drafts this year for the Knicks--what they get out of their top pick--and what they can mine through picking up additional picks through the undrafted players. Kalinoski looks like he can be a guy who the Knicks might take a look at as he meets a lot of the criteria--good shooter combo guard tall hustler team player ball mover and rebounds well.

Going back to Aaron Craft--to find a player who can defend the PG like this--perhaps with a step up in athleticism--I mean mad dog on the ball defense--to me that's the type of defense that helps out even more so than rim protection. If you can stay in front of your man for 10-14 seconds or make the PG get rid of the ball --you can really disrupt offensive flow. If you have it with rim protection--then you have two layers. If those guys can hold their own and the other 3 can score points and atleast stay in front of their men--then you have something.

Nick Calathes is a bigger version of Aaron Craft that could be had for a small amount. His defensive numbers were great but his offense is terrible so far.

I hope another UF guard gets a shot though and that's.Scottie Wilbekin. He did a great job in Australia earlier this year and is struggling shooting the 3 in his first few games in Greece. He lead the Aus team to the finals and was a all 1st team. Pretty good for a 22 y/o.

nick "Im-balding-severely" Calethas is a big PG with great passing vision who cant shoot or defend; id pass (no pun intended)

scottie wilbekin is a short PG with quickness who cant shoot but he can defend very well

Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better

crush--He gives the team what Drey Green gives them from another position in a certain way. Hes done the same thing every year he was at OS. He may just be a guy who can "do it" each step to prove people wrong. I think jumpshot improvement would be big with him. But I can see an avenue where he could easily be a teams 3rd PG.

wI know it's the NBDL, but we got the #3 and #8 names on some list. That stuff enver used to happen. I like that the team focussed on development instead of grabbing a few 36 year olds.

Craft certainly has the "right stuff" and could further develop. Kerr could see some of himself in the kid. Gritty hard worker who is a winner.

Looks like we have 2 of the top 10 call up's from the D-league. I'd say early criticisms of NOT using the Dleague might have been premature.
