I've been saying this for a while. However maybe it works better for us for players teams are ambivalent about keeping as it will require a large chunk of change (eg players like Beverly).

Also maybe every player can't get overpaid before all teams run out of money. If every player gets over paid, but the cap this year remains tight, then eventually the money will run out, so there should be a fair few players willing to sign underpaying, one year contracts. Might pay to be patient.

it will be a very interesting landscape. You have to figure some guys may want to play out their QO as Anthony Davis has been rumored to do.

Pro athletes are notoriously impatient. Im sure the FA market will be healthy.

And hopefully this makes the Melo contract a lot more tolerable for some people who hated it. Phil was able to see the landscape and how his contract for Melo would become extremely reasonable, especially after season 2.

How do you know this? Not saying you're wrong but I don't know how we could know since there may be a lockout. Are you referring to 2017-18?

OK - thanks. That would be Melo's fifteenth season and his salary would be in the mid 20s. We better hope he ages well.

it doesn't mitigate a damned thing. he would still have been overpaid for what he brings to a team. then there's the fact that a tide raises all boats.

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

We have no way of knowing that 24 mil for his fifteenth season is going to be reasonable. He better still be playing at an all-star level if he's taking up almost a quarter of the cap, but not many guys in their 15th seasons are all-stars.

I can see a string of 1 and 1 contracts leading the way for the next several years. Any player that will be in his prime in 2016/2017 should be asking for a 1 year contract with a 1 year player option -- like Lebron did.
You know I gonna spin wit it

Right, but it should change the way people look at his contract. It is no longer the "super max" it has been made to be.

Was EWING worth the 17 mill he got paid in his 16th season?

Players get paid base on experience and their current #s, and what they potentially give you in the future.

Phil specifically referenced the influx of money after the Melo contract was signed. He was very much aware of the fact that the cap would go up significantly.
