An interesting item has surfaced that may shed some light on why Knicks head coach Jeff Van Gundy up and resigned this morning. This week a rumor surfaced in the San Antonio area suggesting the Spurs may be in discussions with the Knicks to send Malik Rose and David Robinson to NY for Latrell Sprewell, Kurt Thomas and others. Obviously this rumor didn't hold much water with me, but sources close to the Spurs say not only has it been heard on the web but also around the team, and that DRob may have greenlighted such a trade. If this is true, which it has not been confirmed nor denied by the Spurs. This could explain a lot. Van Gundy has a great affection for Sprewell, and it is conceivable that Van Gundy drew the line that trading Spree was not something he was ready to accept and would quit first. At this point Knicks sources are in the dark and say until a coaching decision is made, and it doesn't appear to be Don Chaney, that the Knicks are in a holding pattern. I doubt very seriously the Spurs are looking to make such a change, but clearly if this deal was genuinely discussed, it may have been why Van Gundy left... or he may have left because he was tired of beating himself against a brick wall named Scott Layden.

Thoughts?

I find it a strange rumor. The trade for Sprewell without KT for Malik Rose and Drob would work straight up but including KT and others make the deal near impossible salary wise. Unless it's something like Spree+KT+Shandon for Rose+Drob+Smith but that would heavily be in our favor.

it's bad for us. we give up one of the top SG's in the League playing at SF and all of our post players,for a broken SG, an undersized SG, and a busted old center.

it wouldnt even be worth it if they tossed in malik rose - KT is much better than him - and we're giving up othella on an undersized squad?

I would trade Ward + Harrington for Rose and Daniels, and that is an iffy trade.

It's a bad trade allright. Drob lacks heart, Smitty has a so so knee (he's a better Chollie but an accident waiting to happen) but I kinda like Antonio though.

Just admit it Falcindor, you're just not a Spree fan are you? SA would do this trade in a heartbeat but NY won't.

"Juwan Coward" - hehe...I thought it was Derek Anderson who got hammered by him, not Daniels. Or did he get 'em both?
