Things have kicked off here in Santa Cruz, California, as the 2015 NBA D-League Showcase got underway in it’s all new Cup format. Day 1 consisted of four games as NBA scouts/personnel, international scouts, and national media took in the action.

DLeagueDigest.com will be giving readers a rundown of each day at the Showcase, it will consist of top performers from each game, as well as newsy tidbits and happenings from inside Kaiser Permanente Arena. Enjoy!

Thursday, January 15, 2015 (Day 1)

Newsy Tidbits

According to a NBA scout in attendance at the NBADL Showcase, the top three players on the day were Earl Barron, Andre Dawkins and JaMychal Green.

According to a scout, James Michael McAdoo of the Santa Cruz Warriors will be receiving a Call-Up sooner than later.

DLeagueDigest.com heard from multiple team sources that Earl Barron was the top player on Day 1 of the Showcase.

According to one scout, Joe Jackson “really stood out” in his game against the Texas Legends.

DLeagueDigest.com also checked in with a source on sharpshooter Brady Heslip and found out that things are quiet, but with Reno yet to play in Santa Cruz, that could easily change with a standout performance.

Earl Baron! The nba's mystery man- always seems to do well but mysteriously get cut at the last minute. He had a nice, brief Knicks stint. If he's the best the d league has to offer, well it's not exactly flattering!

I know that this is something that has been talked about by some, but the NBA should be looking to make the DL more like baseball's farm system.

Expand the college draft to 5-8 rounds like it used to be, increase the top salaries for DL players ($50G max, 12 man rosters/$500G salary cap per team), and create rules that will allow teams to have a set number of times they can call up or send down a DL player before that player has the option (player's choice) of going into some "draft" process where other teams can offer them a DL contract.

Gives players who need seasoning but don't want to go overseas (or aren't wanted by teams overseas)more of a chance to continue with the sport.

I think they go there eventually. It seems to be moving more in that direction. Europe has "Club" teams and they are better at teaching fundamentals than one and done.

Problem is they'll strip much of the NCAA talent.

I know some of you see it as cash cow's for the schools, but there is greater widespread ramifications.

While that might not bother the NBA fan, college ball is a big financial money maker for the colleges and the networks. I doubt Minor league ball would ever replace that. Its a big economic shift. Think of the arenas and towns that would be effected. The jobs involved is also pretty considerable. Hours of TV programming just gone!!!

I'd like to see a reform of the college game to include greater educational opportunity to "Non college material" students to learn skills to help them in life. If they want to and can get an accredited degree thats great, if not they still need to have skills for life.

I would still like to see the D league have the type of Minor league system but not for players under 20 years old. Teams should be able to draft a kid out of high school, pay him, let him play two years at school then can come to the NBA. If he wants to leave after a year, he spends a year in the Dleague. Still gets paid, and can get paid big mind you. Maybe if a kid does not want to go to college at all, he still spends until 20 years old in the Dleague. So if its a Lebron type once every ten year type player, he'll be economically NOT impacted but can still choose to mature as a person in a college environment (various levels of education) or the dleague.

College players can intern with Pro teams as any other student can. They would be expected to spend some time off campus with the dleague club.

We need better fundamental players in the league. Sure some would be NBA ready before but so few players are really impacting the league at 19. I think Lebron was about the best. Daryl Dawkinss? Moses Malone, Kobe, and KG all needed a year or two to grow before making an impact.

Bottom line is a kid blows his knee out he is paid because he is drafted out of high school. Maybe money is put in trust until he is 21, not saying he can't have some of it but it prevents predatory influence by family and friends draining him. Give the player enough to improve his family's life and enough for comfort. This is a compromise over the current scenario.
