Nope. I agree I rather spend on sure fire players or eat the money and be patient. Don't repeat 2010

Esp if we get the # 1 it's more about building a well rounded roster around our future star. Melo is a nice second option.. Maybe Mathews and a nice pf and solid pg one max and the rest solid players we need to find high iq players that will play the triangle and believe in the system

I'm hard pressed to come up with free agent signing that worked out positively for us in the last 20 years outside of Jeremy Lin.

Allan Houston (the first contract) was very good. That was a pretty good splash. Really we have ha cap space twice. Once it was Houston/Childs. The other it was Amare. Thats your 20 years

I wouldn't be afraid to go after guys man, even guys we might be forecasting on somewhat. Look at this kid Jimmy Butler. Dude was a nice wing player before this year, nothing extraordinary, now he's an MVP candidate and possible max player. I'm not sure anyone saw that coming outta Butler...I look at Enes Kanter this way. Very serviceable NBA C right now but what could he be a year from now as he continues to mature and hone his skills? Armed with another 5 mins a night and 5 more shot attempts at the goal, who knows --with that I think we could be looking at another version of Rony Seikaly here -- Seikaly played in the NBA for a long time and had a very productive career. At his best, Seikaly went for about 17 & 12 a game. Kanter might be capable of more than that...Won't be our first choice I'm sure--probably wouldn't be mine either but drafting Mudiay/signing Enes Kanter might make for a very sound plan B. I just hope we recognize that and are open to such a possibility. I want a plan solidified around Melo ready to go asap. Come up with a plan (multiple plausible scenarios), show faith and conviction in the plan we choose and execute. I don't think Melo's got that many more years at top capacity. He's the centerpiece Phil decided to build around and we're starting to see cracks in the armor already. Gotta get this thing back up and running asap.

There's always the option of sign and trades too, except other teams don't want any of our players on large contracts

As a whole, the acquisitions in 1996 of Houston, Childs, and LJ were pretty good. We got guys who were younger but able to contribute in a starting role. Houston blossomed into an all-star, LJ was a leader and great role player, Childs disappointed but still brought toughness and an edge. That group was a main reason we were a very good team with Ewing at the end of his dominance. I want to follow that method as closely as possible.

You are right, Briggs.

I have faith in Phil to be patient and build this thing from the ground up.
I just don't think that it's going to happen as quickly as some here would like.
It's a three year (minimum) rebuild....a piece here and a piece there.

This. I always thought Childs would blow up as a Knick. He was great as a net the previous year.

JVG must read this board he just said Go after 2way players like Butler, Draymond Green, Wes Matthews and Leonard. Guys you know will give it their all. Get 2 out of 3. Then he said Allan Houston was the last time a free agent signing really panned out for them.

Child's blew up for half a season on a Nets team going nowhere. I always thought we should have gone after Sam Cassell instead.

Our usual mistake is the need for instant gratification- fans want to sign the biggest names so that we immediately contend. What usually happens is that we had no shot at those big names, so we end up scrambling and signing whoever has the biggest name regardless of red flags, fit or issues. Try to sign some players to good deals- but not if it's a huge overpay.

Take the slow road and put the time in for a gradual rebuild. We can go into next season with a nice starting 5 and build on that. Enough with the flashy one way players and big names.

I remember people hated Chris Childs- didn't he instantly break his leg, and then when he returned he was not the PG we had envisaged? I always thought he redeemed himself because he seemed to hit clutch shots in the playoffs and played some tough defense. I liked him. We signed Houston, Childs, and Buck Williams (another favourite of mine) that offseason- Buck was a real smart pro and a great pick up- I wish we could find a vet like that for next season. Then we traded Mason for LJ's gigantic contract, which was another move blasted during that season, but worked out fine in the end.

Ha- he makes it sound so easy! I agree with his sentiment though, I just think that Leonard and Butler are unobtainable.
