He spoke about what a knicks team might look like after the summer on bleacher report. Assuming JR is moved or opts out and Shumpert isn't brought back, he would take the approx. 28 mil in cap room and sign Robin Lopez, Afflalo, and Young and the lineup would look like this:

C Lopez
PF Young
SF Anthony
SG Afflalo
PG Calderon

Also assume guys like Hardaway Jr, Early, Acy, and the 2015 lottery pick off the bench. Solid, but not spectacular.

Do you go with this type of approach, spreading the money across role players that fit, or try to make a bigger splash? I personally would like to sign a difference maker first, maybe Greg Monroe or Paul Millsap, and one other guy like Afflalo or Matthews, instead of signing 3 guys. We would have 4 spots set, then use a stop gap player at the other big man slot until our 2015 pick of Towns, Ok4, or Turner is developed enough to be the 5th starters. Thoughts? Would you be happy with Beck's approach or would you go in a different direction?

it depends on who and where we draft.

If we draft top 5 and come away with what apears to be a potential star then the above approach is great. Just for poops and giggles say we get OK4. Then the above is perfect. You have good NBA pros who "play the right way" and OK4 can develop the right way. If he explodes great. If he takes time like a few years off the bench fine.

If we are picking 7-15 and looking at the Jordan Hills, Gallos, etc of the draft then I would shoot higher, even if it meant less depth.

I think Becks lineup is the more realistic one- I think all the big max players are staying put, so likely we will end up spreading the money. It's not a very exciting lineup, but I'd rather we focus on smart vets who can play defense than flashy players who can't play in a system.

I don't like young- I'd prefer maybe taking a risk on Monroe, but then if we get OK4, I don't think those two can play next to each other.

One thing that becomes increasingly clear is that we need to get a trade exemption to fill out the bench- if we can't shift Amare, then maybe Bargs.

I agree, except Monroe is definitely gone. I just can't see a scenario where Phil doesn't pounce on him right away (assuming Gasol isn't realistic.) He seems like an ideal fit for this offense, and a breakout player in the right system.

Man, I did too. I was like Nick Young? No, it can't be him. lol.

Anyway, Young is overrated, imo, and cost too much.

Yeah this is basically a middle of the pack playoff team. It's better than what we have but not a team that's going to compete for a title.

This is true, but this is also how that Dallas Mavs championship team was built essentially. It was also mentioned that our 2015 draft pick would really have to emerge for a team like this to be a contender.

I doubt both would leave but they may let Wesley Matthews leave in FA to keep their cap space balanced. Aldridge, Matthews, and Lopez are all looking for pay days. LA will want near the mega max. Lopez will want a big check and Wes will want a little raise. Plus Batum is up the following year and Lillard will be looking for his max extension. On top of all of that they will need space to sign a good bench to compete.

I hope they are silly enough to let Lopez go. I seriously offer him $13-16M. That is very high but a good rim protecting big that rebounds well and can score some is valuable.

Portland has never been scared to spend and do a good job in the draft and collecting assets. They are actually a very well run org who I am surprised hasn't won more championships.

On that note Batum is killing me on my fantasy team and is having a down yr. Maybe we can steal him from them some way. He would be a poor mans Pippen in the triangle and his a great compliment to Melo.

Unless I'm mistaken, doesn't the triangle offense require a center that has some sort of back to the basket offensive skill? I get that R.Lopez is high energy, defense and rebounds well, which are all skills that we seem to lack at the position now, but is his offense up to par?

If the Knicks can't snatch Gasol away from Memphis, I believe we will be in this same predicament again in 2015-2016. This team has so many holes that every transaction that P.Jackson makes from here on out, needs to be a home run.

I like Batum as well. Plays good D and can play and off the ball. He reminds me of a nouveau (get it?? French!) Iguodala

As for Robin Lopez it's kinda funny he became the more valuable Bropez. I'd take him over his brother all things being equal 7 days a week and twice on Sunday. He's another guy who is integral to winning teams. No nonsense good D playing big man who puts up a fight if you go to the rim. I'm freaking DYING for the Knicks to get this type of player. I'm so mentally exhausted watching atrocious and lackluster defense (individual and team). Please please please get some hard nosed players no matter how the Melodrama plays out.

BTW: on the Melo Love/Hate Spectrum I lean past the center towards the dislike side (his game, I 9/10 times could care less to ever hear what any athlete has to say cause it's usually nonsense so I'm strictly talking Melos game here). Anyway, what I mean to say is while it's tough to build around a scorer like Melo IF Phil is committed to doing it he needs guys like Batum and RLopez around him. Tough two ways guys who don't need the ball but who can score if needed plus a savvy vet PG. With that formula it's possible to build at least a team that will be competitive if not a year to year contender and that might be the best it will get barring a miracle in the draft where we 1) hit the lotto and get a top pick then 2) Ok4 or Towns turns into a Duncan type centerpiece

The center needs to be at the very least fundamentally sound for the position. Robin fits the minimum. I would like a Crack at his backup, Kaman. I dunno if he's lazy now or what but he should still be starting somewhere...I also really like spencer hawes. He's currently DeAndre Jordans backup. Dude is to young and talented to be a back up right now.

Everything else is true as well. Phil has his work cut out for him.

I like Kaman. Seems like he is putting up big numbers. I wonder if the blazers let robin walk because of Kaman.
Also, didnt robin have to have the same initial surgery as Brook on his foot?

My thought as well though they could go over .500 in the East. Nevertheless, it's not a team with a chance of even getting to the ECF let alone winning a championship.
