It looks like Jimmy Dolan's habit of buying fan patience with expensive high profile moves is already losing steam with the Phil Jackson show.
Dolan's return on his splashy moves is always low. He is lucky when he gets one year of value out of a single five year contract.
The problem with this approach is you can't pull it off every year. He re-signed Melo and gave Phil his retirement plan, but there are no giant publicity signings next year, just some free agents who come to NYC to get paid.
With people already questioning Phil's acumen as a GM, there is already a tarnish on Dolan's shiny new toy.
Phil probably cannot fix much here. If he is serious about building a new culture, that will only happen with a completely new set of players and a clear game plan over five years. New cultures don't just sprout like magic beans.
I'm afraid Phil will be gone before five years, because this could be disastrous next year too. If it is, Dolan and Jackson will come to some sort of parting agreement and call it quits.
There is no way in hell Phil Jackson will be here for five years of this. He signed a loser star and saddled himself with the worst foundational player in the max category possible. Phil tried to psych himself into believing he could wave his wand and Melo would be like his other stars. Fat chance. Now he knows.
Phil Jackson has NEVER had to overcome having a squad with its core player being as defective as this. At his age and with his health issues, he will not have the stomach to deal with Melo and his BS. Phil is going to walk by the end of next season if things are not turning around. He will not stay if we are not a playoff team next season.
